アドラムとミツパにて
1ダビデはガテを去り、アドラムのほら穴へ逃げ延びました。そうこうするうち、そこに兄弟や身内の者が、しだいに集まって来たのです。 2そのほか、問題や借金をかかえた者、不満を持つ者などが集まって来たので、たちまちダビデの周囲には、四百人ほどの集団ができました。 3ダビデはこのあとモアブのミツパへ行き、モアブ王に、事態がはっきりするまで両親を保護してもらえないかと頼みました。 4それでダビデの両親は、ダビデがほら穴に立てこもっている間、ずっとモアブ王のもとにいました。
ノブの祭司たちを殺すサウル
5ある日のこと、預言者ガドがダビデに、ほら穴を出てユダの地に帰るようにと言ったので、ダビデはハレテの森へ移りました。 6ダビデがユダに戻ったという知らせは、やがてサウル王の耳に届きました。ちょうどその時、サウルはギブアの柳の木の下で、槍を手にして座っていたところでした。彼の回りには家臣たちが並んでいました。 7その知らせを聞いた時、王は声を上ずらせて言いました。「ベニヤミンの者たちよ、よく聞け！ ダビデはおまえたちに畑やぶどう畑をくれたか。軍の指揮官に取り立ててやるとでも約束したか。 8それなのにどうして、おまえたちは私を欺いたのだ。だれ一人、私の息子ヨナタンがダビデに通じていることを話してくれなかったではないか。私のために悲しんでくれる者もいない。考えてもみろ。息子が、ダビデが私を殺しに来るのを助けているのだ。」
9-10その時、家臣の中に同席していたエドム人ドエグが口を開きました。「私がノブにおりました時、ダビデが祭司アヒメレクと話しているのを見かけました。アヒメレクは、ダビデのために主にお伺いを立て、そのうえ、パンとペリシテ人ゴリヤテの剣を与えたのでございます。」
11-12王は、直ちにアヒメレクとその全家族、それにノブにいる祭司全員を呼び寄せました。一同がそろうと、激しい口調でアヒメレクを責めました。「よく聞け、アヒトブの息子！」
「何でございましょう。」
アヒメレクはびくびくしながら答えました。
13「おまえはダビデと組んで、この私に盾つく気か。どうしてダビデにパンと剣を与えたり、神に伺いを立ててやったりしたのだ。あいつをたきつけて謀反を起こさせ、私を攻めさせるつもりだったのだな。」
14「とんでもないことです。あなたのご家来方の中でも、婿殿ダビデ様ほど忠義なお方はほかにおられません。ダビデ様はあなたの護衛隊長であり、王室で最も尊敬を集めているお方ではございませんか。 15私があの方のために神に伺いを立てましたのも、今に始まったことではありません。このことで、私や一族の者が責めを受けるのは合点がまいりません。あなたに対する陰謀などとは全く寝耳に水です。」
16「アヒメレクめ、一族もろとも、いのちはないものと思え！」 17そう言うと、王は護衛兵に命じました。「祭司どもを死罪にせよ！ 彼らはダビデと共謀したのだ。ダビデが私のもとから逃げ出したのを知りながら、知らせて来ようともしなかったのだ。」
しかし護衛兵は、祭司を手にかけるのが怖くて、命令を聞きません。 18それで王はドエグに、「おまえがやれ」と命じました。ドエグは彼らに飛びかかり、全部で八十五人の祭司を血祭りに上げました。全員、祭司の服を着たままでした。 19次にドエグは、祭司の町ノブへ行き、殺された祭司の家族を、男も女も、子どもも赤ん坊も、牛もろばも羊までも、残らず殺してしまいました。
20ところが、アヒメレクの息子エブヤタルだけは難を免れて、ダビデのもとに逃げ延びたのです。 21エブヤタルは、王のしたことをダビデに告げました。 22ダビデは悲痛な声で言いました。「そうでしたか。あそこでドエグを見かけた時、彼は王に告げ口するだろうとにらんでいたのです。それにしても、私がご一族の死を招いたようなものです。 23どうか、ここでいっしょに暮らしてください。いのちに代えてもお守りします。あなたに降りかかる危害は、わが身に降りかかったも同然ですから。」

3¶ And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. 4And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.
5¶ And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.
6¶ When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)22.6 tree…: or, grove in a high place 7Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds; 8That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?22.8 sheweth…: Heb. uncovereth mine ear
9¶ Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 10And he enquired of the LORD for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. 11Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king. 12And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.22.12 Here…: Heb. Behold me 13And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? 14Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house? 15Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.22.15 less…: Heb. little or great 16And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father’s house.
17¶ And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.22.17 footmen: or, guard: Heb. runners 18And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. 19And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
20¶ And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. 21And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the LORD’s priests. 22And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father’s house. 23Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
