王位から退けられたサウル
1ある日、サムエルはサウルに言いました。「私はあなたをイスラエルの王にした。主がそうせよと言われたからだ。今、確かにあなたは主に従っている。 2それで、主はあなたにこう命じておられる。『アマレク人に罰を下す。イスラエル人がエジプトを脱出した時、彼らが領地内を通るのを拒否したからだ。 3さあ、攻め上ってアマレク人を一人残らず打ちなさい。男も女も、子どもも赤ん坊も、牛も羊も、らくだもろばも徹底的に打つのだ。』」
4サウルは兵をテライムに集結させました。兵は二十万で、それにユダの兵一万が加わりました。 5そしてアマレク人の町へ行き、谷に陣を敷きました。 6サウルはケニ人に使者を立て、アマレク人と運命を共にしたくなければ彼らの中から出て行くように警告しました。イスラエル人がエジプトから脱出した時、ケニ人が親切にしてくれたからです。ケニ人はさっそく荷物をまとめ、アマレク人の中から出て行きました。 7そののちサウルは、ハビラからエジプトの東方、シュルに至る道でアマレク人を打ち、 8王アガグを捕虜にしたほかは、一人残らず殺しました。 9しかし、サウルと兵は、羊や牛の最上のもの、子羊のまるまる太ったものを殺さずに取り分けておきました。それらがとても気に入ったからです。そして、あまり値打ちのない、質の悪いものだけを殺したのです。
10その時、主はサムエルに語りかけました。 11「わたしはサウルを王に立てたことを悔いる。二度までもわたしに逆らった。」サムエルはそのことばに激しく動揺し、夜通し主に叫び続けました。
12翌朝早く、彼がサウルに会いに出かけようとした時、「サウル王はカルメル山へ行って自分のために記念碑を建て、それからギルガルへ引き返した」と告げる者がありました。 13ようやくサムエルが捜し当てると、サウルは上機嫌であいさつしてきました。「これは、ようこそ。ご安心ください。主のご命令をすべて守りました。」
14「なに？ では、この聞こえてくる、メエメエ、モウモウという鳴き声はいったい何だ。」
15「特上の羊や牛を殺してしまうのはもったいないと考え、あなたの神、主にささげるために連れて来たのです。ほかのものはいっさい殺しました。」
16「黙りなさい！ 昨夜、主が何とおっしゃったか教えよう。」
「何とおっしゃったのですか？」
17「サウル。自分では取るに足りない者でいるつもりかもしれないが、いやしくもあなたは、イスラエルの王に任命された者ではないか。 18主に何と命じられたか、忘れてはいないだろう。『罪人アマレクのすべてを滅ぼし尽くせ』と言われたのではなかったか。 19それなのに、どうして従わなかったのだ。なぜ戦利品に飛びついて、主の命令に背いたのだ。」
20「私としては、お従いしたつもりです。命令どおりにいたしました。アガグ王は連れて来ましたが、ほかのアマレク人は全員殺しました。 21たまたまいた羊や牛や戦利品の最上のものを取り分け、主にいけにえとしてささげようとしたのは、民が言いだしたことです。」
22サムエルは言いました。「主は、いくら焼き尽くすいけにえやその他のいけにえをささげたとしても、あなたが従順でなければ、少しもお喜びにはならない。従順は、いけにえよりはるかに尊いのだ。主は、あなたが雄羊の脂肪をささげるよりも、主の御声に耳を傾けるほうをお喜びになる。 23反逆は占いの罪に等しく、不従順は偶像礼拝に等しい罪なのだ。もはや主のおことばを無視したからには、主もあなたを王位から退けることだろう。」
24「ああ、私は罪を犯しました。言われるとおり、あなたの指図にも主の命令にも背きました。民を恐れて、言いなりになったのです。 25どうか、この罪をお赦しください。主を礼拝するため、いっしょに行ってください。」
26「今さら、むだなことだ！ 主のご命令を退けたあなたを、主もイスラエルの王位から退けられたのだ。」
27こう答えて引き返そうとするサムエルにとりすがったサウルは、そのはずみでサムエルの上着を破ってしまいました。 28サムエルはサウルに言いました。「よく見るがよい。主は、今日、あなたからイスラエルの王国を取り上げて、さらにすぐれた人物にお渡しになった。 29イスラエルの栄光そのものであるお方のことばに偽りはなく、心変わりもありえない。」
30それでもサウルはとりすがりました。「私が間違っていました。しかし、どうか今、民と指導者たちとの前で私の面目をつぶさないでください。どうか、いっしょに行って、あなたの主を礼拝させてください。」
31あまりの熱心さにサムエルもついに折れました。 32そののち、サムエルはサウルに、「アガグ王を連れて来なさい」と命じました。アガグはいそいそとサムエルの前に出て来ました。「最悪の事態は免れた。きっと助けてもらえるだろう」と思ったのです。 33しかし、サムエルはきびしく言い渡しました。「おまえの剣は実に多くの母親から子どもを奪った。今度はおまえの母親が子を失う番だ。」そうしてサムエルはギルガルで、主の前にアガグを切り殺しました。
34そののち、サムエルはラマの自宅へ戻り、サウルもギブアに引き返しました。 35二人は、もう二度と顔を合わせることがありませんでした。しかし、サムエルはサウルのことで悲しみ、主もまた、サウルをイスラエルの王としたことを悔やみました。
1Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD. 2Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. 3Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. 4And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.15.5 laid…: or, fought
6¶ And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt. 8And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.15.9 fatlings: or, second sort
10¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, 11It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. 12And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. 13And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. 14And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? 15And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. 16Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. 17And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? 18And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.15.18 they…: Heb. they consume them 19Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD? 20And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. 22And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.15.23 witchcraft: Heb. divination
24¶ And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. 26And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. 27And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. 28And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. 29And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.15.29 Strength: or, Eternity, or, Victory 30Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. 31So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.
32¶ Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past. 33And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.
34¶ Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. 35And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
