1サムエルはオリーブ油の入ったつぼを取り、サウルの頭に注ぎかけ、口づけしてから言いました。「なぜこんなことをしたか、おわかりですか。主があなたを、ご自身の民イスラエルの王に任命なさったからなのです。 2今、私と別れたら、あなたはベニヤミン領内のツェルツァフにあるラケルの墓のそばで、二人の人に出会うでしょう。その二人は、ろばがとっくに見つかったと伝えるはずです。また、お父上があなたのことを、『いったい、どこへ行ってしまったんだ』と心配している様子も知らせてくれます。 3それから、さらにタボルの樫の木のところまで行くと、三人の人に出会うでしょう。神様を礼拝するため、ベテルの祭壇に向かう人たちです。一人は子やぎ三頭を携え、一人はパンを三つ、他の一人はぶどう酒の皮袋一袋を持っているはずです。 4彼らはあなたにあいさつして、パンを二つくれるので、それを受け取りなさい。 5そのあとあなたは、ペリシテ人の守備隊がいる、『神の丘』として名高いギブア・エロヒムに行くことになります。そこへ着くと、預言者の一団が、琴、タンバリン、笛、竪琴を鳴らし、預言をしながら丘を降りて来るのに出会うでしょう。
6その時、神の霊が激しく下り、あなたも共に預言を始めます。すると、全く別人になったように感じ、またそうふるまうに違いありません。 7その時から、自分の思うとおり、その時その時の状況に応じて、いちばん良いと思われることをすればよいのです。神様が導いてくださるからです。 8それから、ギルガルへ行き、七日間、私を待ちなさい。焼き尽くすいけにえと和解のいけにえをささげるために私も行くから、今後なすべきことは、その時に教えることにしましょう。」
9サウルはサムエルのもとを辞して進んで行くうち、神から新しい心を与えられました。そしてサムエルの預言はすべて、その日のうちに現実となったのです。
10サウルと召使が神の丘に着くと、言われたとおり預言者の一団が近づいて来るのに出会いました。神の霊がサウルに下り、彼も預言を始めました。 11そのことを聞いたサウルの友人たちは驚き、「どうしたんだ。あのサウルが預言者だって？」と言いました。 12居合わせた近所の人も、「父親もあんなふうだったかな」とささやきました。そういうわけで、「サウルも預言者なのか」ということばが、ことわざのようになったのです。 13サウルは預言を終えると、丘の祭壇へと上って行きました。
14彼のおじはサウルと召使いに、「いったい、どこへ行っていたのだ」と聞きました。
「ろばを捜し回っていたのですが、見つからないので、サムエル様のところへ、ろばの居場所を伺いに行ったのです。」
15「そうだったのか。それで何と？」
16「ろばはもう見つかったとおっしゃいました。」
しかしサウルは、自分が王として油を注がれたことは黙っていました。
17さて、サムエルは全イスラエルをミツパに召集し、 18-19イスラエルの神のことばを伝えました。「わたしはあなたがたをエジプトから連れ出し、エジプト人と、あなたがたに害をもたらすすべての民の手から救い出した。ところが、こうまで心にかけたわたしを退け、『それより、王が欲しい』と叫んでいる。さあ、部族ごとに、氏族ごとに、わたしの前に出なさい。」
20こうしてサムエルは、部族の指導者を整列させました。聖なるくじで、まずベニヤミン族が選ばれました。 21ベニヤミン族を、氏族ごとに主の前に出させたところ、マテリの氏族が選ばれました。こうしてついに、キシュの子サウルをくじで選び出したのです。ところが、どこを捜してもサウルの姿は見当たりません。 22人々が、「いったいサウルは、どこへ行ったのでしょう。ここに来ているのですか」と尋ねると主は、「見なさい。彼は荷物の陰に隠れている」と答えました。 23それで人々は彼を見つけると、そこから連れて来ました。サウルが立つと、他のだれよりも肩から上だけ高いのが目立ちました。
24サムエルはすべての民の前で宣言しました。「この人こそ、主が王としてお選びくださった人だ。イスラエル中で、この人の右に出る者はいない！」
「王様、ばんざーいっ！」
民の間から喜びの叫びが上がりました。
25サムエルは全国民に、王の権利と義務について語りました。さらに、それを文書にして、主の前の特別な場所に納めました。こののち、人々をそれぞれ自分の家に帰したのです。 26サウルもまた、ギブアの自宅に戻りました。この時、神によって心動かされた勇士たちは、彼について行きました。 27ところが、中には飲んだくれやならず者もいて、「こんな男がおれたちを守れるものか」と言って彼を侮り、贈り物すら持っていこうとしませんでした。しかし、サウルは何も言いませんでした。
1Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance? 2When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel’s sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?10.2 care: Heb. business 3Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine: 4And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.10.4 salute…: Heb. ask thee of peace 5After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy: 6And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man. 7And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.10.7 And…: Heb. 14¶ And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel. 15And Saul’s uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you. 16And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
17¶ And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh; 18And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you: 19And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands. 20And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken. 21When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found. 22Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff. 23And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward. 24And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.10.24 God…: Heb.
