1あなたがたのところへ行こうとするのは、これで三度目です。聖書には、「二人か三人に目撃された犯罪は罰せられなければならない」（申命19・15）とあります。 2私は、前回の滞在中、前から罪を犯していた人たちにすでに警告しておいたはずですが、今また、彼らだけでなく、あなたがた全員に警告します。次に会ったら、きびしく罰するつもりです。手かげんはしません。 3あなたがたは、キリストがほんとうに私を通して語っておられるかどうか知りたいのでしょうから、その証拠を示します。キリストは、あなたがたに弱い態度をとられるのではなく、あなたがたの内部で強大な力を発揮なさいます。 4キリストの、人間としての弱い体は十字架上で死にました。しかし今、キリストは、神の偉大な力を受けて生きておられます。私たちもキリスト同様、肉体的には弱い者でしたが、今は、キリストに似て、強くされた者となっています。そして、あなたがたに対処するに十分な神の力をいただいているのです。
信仰と生活を点検しなさい
5よくよく自分を吟味しなさい。ほんとうにクリスチャンだと言えますか。クリスチャンとしてのテストに合格していますか。自分の内に住まれるキリストと、そのあふれる力とを、いよいよ強く実感していますか。 6私たちはこのテストに合格し、確実に主のものとなっています。このことを、あなたがたに認めてほしいのです。 7あなたがたが正しい生活をするように祈っています。それは、私たちの教えの正しさが証明され、面目を施したいからではありません。たとえ私たちは軽蔑されようとも、あなたがたには正しい行いをしてもらいたいからです。 8私たちの務めは、いついかなる時にも、正しいことを勧めることであって、悪を望むことではありません。 9自分たちは弱く軽蔑されても、あなたがたがほんとうに強くなってくれればうれしいのです。最大の願いと祈りは、あなたがたが霊的に整えられた者になってくれることです。 10そちらに行って、しかったり罰したりしないですむようにと願いつつ、今この手紙を書いています。私に託されている主の権威を、あなたがたを罰するためにではなく、強くするために使いたいからです。
11最後に、次のように書いて、筆を置きます。喜びなさい。健全に成長しなさい。互いに励まし合いなさい。互いに仲よくし、平和を保ちなさい。そうすれば、愛と平和の神があなたがたと共にいてくださいます。
12主にあって、互いに親しみをこめて、あいさつを交わしなさい。こちらのクリスチャン全員が、心からよろしくと言っています。
13どうか、主イエス・キリストの恵みが、あなたがた一同にありますように。神の愛と聖霊との交わりが、あなたがたと共にありますように。

Final Warnings
1This will be my third visit to you. Scripture says, “Every matter must be proved by the words of two or three witnesses.” (Deuteronomy 19:15) 2I already warned you during my second visit. I now say it again while I’m away. When I return, I won’t spare those who sinned earlier. I won’t spare any of the others either. 3You are asking me to prove that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you. He is powerful among you. 4It is true that Christ was nailed to the cross because he was weak. But Christ lives by God’s power. In the same way, we share his weakness. But by God’s power we will live with Christ as we serve you.
5Take a good look at yourselves to see if you are really believers. Test yourselves. Don’t you realize that Christ Jesus is in you? Unless, of course, you fail the test! 6I hope you will discover that I haven’t failed the test. 7I pray to God that you won’t do anything wrong. I don’t pray so that people will see that I have passed the test. Instead, I pray this so that you will do what is right, even if it seems I have failed. 8I can’t do anything to stop the truth. I can only work for the truth. 9I’m glad when I am weak but you are strong. I pray that there will be no more problems among you. 10That’s why I write these things before I come to you. Then when I do come, I won’t have to be hard on you when I use my authority. The Lord gave me the authority to build you up. He didn’t give it to me to tear you down.

11Finally, brothers and sisters, be joyful! Work to make things right with one another. Help one another and agree with one another. Live in peace. And the God who gives love and peace will be with you.
