1神はこう言います。
「わたしは、カルデヤ人の住むバビロンを
隅々まで滅ぼす者たちを、勇気づける。
2ふるい分ける者たちが来て、
バビロンをふるいにかけ、風を起こして吹き飛ばす。
彼らは、災いの日に四方八方から来て、攻め立てる。
3敵の矢はバビロンの射手を倒し、勇士のよろいを貫く。
生き延びる者は一人もいない。
若者も老人もみな、いのちを落とす。
4カルデヤ人の地に倒れ、
めった切りにされて路上で息絶える。
5わたしは、イスラエルとユダを見捨てたわけではなく、
依然として彼らの神である。
だがカルデヤ人の地は、
イスラエルのきよい神に対する罪で満ちている。」
6バビロンから逃げ出し、自分のいのちを救いなさい。
罠にかかってはいけません。
そのまま残ったら、神がバビロンのすべての罪に
報復する時、巻き添えを食います。
7バビロンは、主の御手にある金の杯のようでした。
すべての国々はこれから飲んで、酔いつぶれました。
8ところが今度は、突然、そのバビロンが倒れたのです。
この国のために泣きなさい。薬を与えなさい。
もしかしたら、元どおりになるかもしれません。
9できることなら助けたいのです。
しかし今となっては、どんな手を打っても救えません。
この国を見捨てて、故国へ帰りなさい。
主がこの国に天罰を下したからです。
10主は私たちの顔を立ててくださいました。
さあ、エルサレムで、
神のなさったすべてのことを言い広めましょう。
11矢じりを研ぎ、盾を高く掲げなさい。
主はメディヤ人の王たちを勇気づけて
バビロンに乗り込ませ、
これを滅ぼすことに決めたからです。
これが、神の民を虐待し、
神殿を汚した者たちへの報復です。
12バビロンよ、守備を固め、城壁に見張りを大ぜい立て、
伏兵を隠しておきなさい。
神は宣言したことをみな実行するからです。
13商業の中心地である繁栄した港よ。
いのちの糸が切られる最期の時がきました。
14天の軍勢の主はご自分の名にかけて、こう誓いました。
おまえの町々は、無数のばったが群がる畑のように、
敵兵であふれ返る。
彼らは、天にも届けとばかり、勝ちどきを上げる。
15神は力と知恵をもって地をお造りになりました。
すぐれた知性をもって天を張り広げました。
16神が口を開くと大空に雷がとどろき渡ります。
神は大地から水蒸気を上らせ、ご自分の倉から、
雨と風を伴ういなずまを取り出します。
17神に比べたら、人間は愚かな獣で、
一かけらの知恵もありません。
金細工人は偶像を作るたびに、
ますます良心が鈍くなります。
偶像には、いのちのしるしである息がないのに、
それを作るたびに神ができたと言って、
うそをつくからです。
18偶像は、むなしいものです。
神が来てそれをみな滅ぼす時が近づいています。
19イスラエルの神は偶像ではありません。
この神があらゆるものを造り、
イスラエルをご自分の民としました。
その名は天の軍勢の主です。
20バビロンは神のための戦いの斧であり、また剣です。
主は言います。
「わたしは国々を木端微塵に砕き、
多くの王国を滅ぼすためにおまえを用いる。
21おまえを使って軍勢を蹴散らし、馬と乗り手を倒し、
戦車とそれに乗っている者を打ち砕く。
22おまえを使って、年老いた者も若者も、
若い男も若い女も、
23羊飼いも羊の群れも、農夫も牛も、
指揮官も総督も倒す。
24わたしはイスラエルの目の前で、
バビロンとカルデヤ人に報いる。
彼らがわたしの民に加えたすべての悪に
仕返しするのだ。
25全世界を破壊する大きな山、バビロンよ。
わたしはおまえを攻める。
おまえにこぶしを振り上げ、高い所から突き落とし、
おまえを焼けただれた山にする。
26おまえは永久に荒れ地となり、
おまえの石さえも、建築用として再生されることはない。
おまえは地上から完全に一掃されるのだ。」
27多くの国々に合図して、
バビロンを攻める兵士を集めなさい。
雄たけびをあたりに響かせなさい。
アララテ、ミニ、アシュケナズの軍隊を呼びなさい。
指揮官を決め、長蛇の列をなして馬を進めなさい。
28バビロンめざして、メディヤ人の王たちと将軍たち、
その支配下の国々の軍隊を攻め上らせなさい。
29バビロンは震え、苦痛で身もだえします。
主がこの国について計画したことはみな、
少しも変更されないからです。
バビロンは、だれも住まない荒れ地となります。
30大勇士でも、戦う気力を失い、
仮小屋に引きこもります。
力が尽きて、女のようになるのです。
侵略者たちは家々を焼き、町の門を壊しました。
31伝令が四方八方から王のもとへ駆けつけ、
何もかも失われたと報告します。
32退路はすべて断たれ、とりでは焼き払われ、
兵士たちは大混乱に陥っています。
33イスラエルの神である天の軍勢の主が、
こう言ったからです。
「バビロンは打ち場に積まれた麦のようだ。
もうすぐ、からざおで打たれる。」
34-35バビロンのユダヤ人たちは訴えます。
「バビロンのネブカデネザル王は、私たちを食い物にし、
踏みつけ、骨なしにしました。
怪物のように私たちをのみ込み、
私たちの財宝で腹を満たし、
私たちをイスラエルから追放しました。
バビロンに、このすべての悪事の報いを刈り取らせ、
その手で流した私たちの血を完全に償わせてください。」
36それに対して、主はこうお答えになります。
「わたしはおまえたちを弁護する者となり、
おまえたちのために報復する。
バビロンの川を干上がらせ、水の補給を断つ。
37こうしてバビロンは、石くれの山となり、
山犬が住みつき、だれもいない見るも恐ろしい地となる。
38バビロニヤ人は宴会を開いて、
ライオンのようにほえる。
39彼らがありったけのぶどう酒を飲んで
気持ちが大きくなっている時、
わたしは彼らのために別の宴会を設け、
彼らが意識を失って倒れ、
永遠の眠りにつくまで飲ませる。
40彼らを子羊のように、また雄羊や雄やぎのように、
ほふり場に引いて行く。
41全世界の人のあこがれの的だった、
あの偉大なバビロンは、なぜ倒れたのか。
世界は、バビロンが倒れるのを見て、目を疑う。
42海がせり上がってバビロンを包むと、
それは波に覆われた。
43町々は廃墟となった。
バビロンは、誰ひとり住まず、旅人さえ寄りつかない、
乾ききった荒れ地となる。
44わたしはバビロンの神であるベルを罰し、
その口から、彼がのみ込んだ物を取り出す。
諸国の民は二度と彼を拝まない。
バビロンの城壁は倒れてしまった。
45わたしの民よ、バビロンを脱出し、
わたしの激しい怒りから自分を救いなさい。
46外国の軍隊が近づいて来るといううわさを聞いても、うろたえてはならない。うわさは、いつになっても絶えないものだ。だが、この国に内戦が起こり、各州の総督が互いに戦う時がくる。 47わたしがこの大都市とこの国のすべての偶像を罰する時が、きっとくる。そうなれば、町中に死人が転がるようになる。 48バビロンを攻める強力な軍勢が北から来るので、天も地も喜ぶ。」そう主は言います。 49かつてイスラエルの民を殺したように、今度はバビロンが殺される番です。 50剣から逃れた者は、立ち止まって、あたりの様子を見ていてはいけません。力の限り逃げなさい。主を思い出して、はるかかなたのエルサレムへ帰って行きなさい。 51「バビロンから来た外国人たちの手で神殿が汚されたので、私たちはとても恥ずかしい思いをしました。」
52「そのとおりだ」と、主は言います。しかし、バビロンの偶像が壊される時が近づいています。国中に、傷ついた人のうめき声が聞こえます。 53「たとえ、バビロンが天のように高くなり、その力が信じられないほど増し加わったとしても、必ず死ぬ」と、主は言います。 54カルデヤ人の支配する地、バビロンに上がる大きな破壊の叫びを聞きなさい。 55主はバビロンの息の根を止めます。その大きな声も、やがては大波にのまれて消えます。 56すべてのものを破壊する軍勢が攻めて来て、勇士たちを滅ぼします。武器という武器はどれも、まるで役に立ちません。神がバビロンに与えるものは、当然の刑罰だけです。 57「わたしは、この国の重立った者、知恵のある者、支配者、指揮官、それに勇士たちを酔いつぶす。彼らは深い眠りに落ち、二度と目を覚まさない。」こう天の軍勢の主である王が言います。
58バビロンの厚い城壁はくずれて平らになり、
高い城門も無残に焼け落ちます。
多くの国から呼び集められた建築士は、
造った物が火で焼かれるため、
むだ骨を折ったことに気づきます。
59ゼデキヤ王の治世の第四年に、エレミヤを通して、次のことばがマフセヤの子のネリヤの子セラヤにありました。それは、宿営長セラヤがユダのゼデキヤ王と共に捕まり、バビロンへ流される、というものでした。 60エレミヤは、先に書いたような、神がバビロンに下そうとしているすべての災害を巻物に書き留め、 61-62その巻物をセラヤに渡して言いました。「バビロンに着いたら、私の書いたことを読み、次のように言いなさい。『主よ。あなたはバビロンを滅ぼし、そこを猫の子一匹いない、永遠に見捨てられた所にする、と語りました。』 63-64読み終えたら、石を結びつけてユーフラテス川に投げ込み、こう言いなさい。『このように、バビロンは沈み、二度と浮かび上がらない。わたしがこの国に災いを招くからだ。』」
これで、エレミヤのことばは終わります。
1Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;51.1 midst: Heb. heart 2And will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about. 3Against him that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him that lifteth himself up in his brigandine: and spare ye not her young men; destroy ye utterly all her host. 4Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streets. 5For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel. 6Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD’s vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence. 7Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD’s hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad. 8Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed. 9We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies. 10The LORD hath brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God. 11Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the LORD hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the LORD, the vengeance of his temple.51.11 bright: Heb. pure 12Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the LORD hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.51.12 ambushes: Heb. liers in wait 13O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness. 14The LORD of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillers; 23I will also break in pieces with thee the shepherd and his flock; and with thee will I break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee will I break in pieces captains and rulers. 24And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, saith the LORD. 25Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the LORD, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain. 26And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken. 31One post shall run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to shew the king of Babylon that his city is taken at one end, 32And that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are affrighted. 33For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; 59¶ The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign.
