1「イスラエルよ、本気でわたしのもとへ帰りたければ、
偶像を完全に捨てよ。
2もしおまえが、
生ける神であるわたしによってだけ誓い、
誠実できよく正しい生活を始めるなら、
おまえは世界の国々へのあかしとなる。
こうして、諸国の民はわたしのもとへ来て、
わたしの名をあがめるようになる。」
3主はユダとエルサレムの人たちに、こう告げます。
「固くなったおまえたちの心を耕せ。
そうでなければ、良い種がいばらにふさがれて
だめになる。
4体だけでなく、心と思いもきよめよ。
そうでなければ、おまえたちの罪のために
わたしの憤りが爆発し、
おまえたちを黒こげにしてしまう。
誰ひとり、その火を消すことはできない。
北からもたらされる災難
5エルサレムとユダに向かって叫べ。
国中に響くように警報を鳴らせと言いなさい。
『いのちが危ないから、走って逃げるのだ。
要塞で固めた町へ逃げ込め。』
6エルサレムから合図を送りなさい。
『すぐ、逃げ出せ。ぐずぐずするな。』
主であるわたしが、北から、
とてつもなく大きな破滅をもたらすからだ。
7ライオンのように国々を滅ぼす者が
住みかから出て来て、おまえたちの国へ向かっている。
町々は住む者もなく、廃墟となる。」
8喪服を着て、胸も張り裂けんばかりに泣きなさい。
主の激しい怒りが、まだ私たちから去らないからです。
9「その日には、王や指導者は恐ろしさで震え、
祭司と預言者は恐怖に顔をこわばらせる」と、
主は言います。
10そこで、私は申し上げました。
「ですが神よ。
民は、あなたのおことばにだまされました。
確か、エルサレムに大きな祝福がくるとの
お約束だったのに、
今になっても剣が住民に突きつけられています。」
11-12その時、神は荒野から、
すさまじい勢いで吹きまくる熱風を送ります。
こうして、滅亡の時がきたことを宣告するのです。
13敵は嵐のように襲いかかります。
その戦車は竜巻のようで、
その馬はわしよりも速く走ります。
ついに滅亡の時がきたのです。
ああ、なんという大きな災いでしょう。
14エルサレムよ、
手遅れにならないうちに心をきよめなさい。
今ならまだ、悪い思いを捨てれば、救われます。
15ダンから、エフライムの山から、
あなたの滅びが言い渡されました。
16ほかの国々に知らせなさい。
遠い国から敵が来て、
エルサレムとユダの町々に叫びながら向かって来ます。
17彼らは、野獣に立ち向かう羊飼いたちのように、
エルサレムを包囲します。
「それは、わたしの民がわたしに背いたからだ」と、
主は言います。
18あなたの行いが、この災いを招いたのです。
それはあなたにとって苦い薬で、
腹の底までしみわたります。
19私は苦痛のため身もだえします。
心臓は激しく波打っています。
とても黙ってはいられません。
敵のラッパの音と雄たけびを聞いたからです。
20破壊に次ぐ破壊の波が押し寄せ、
国土はすっかり荒れ果ててしまいます。
一瞬のうちに、
家は一軒残らず押しつぶされます。
21いつまで、このような状態が続くのでしょう。
いつまで、
戦いと死を見続けなければならないのでしょう。
22「わたしの民が愚かなことをやめるまでだ。
彼らは、わたしの言うことを聞こうとしない。
理解力のない子で、判断力がない。
悪いことをするとなると素早いが、
正しいことをする才能など、
まるで持ち合わせていない。」
23彼らの地を見下ろすと、見渡す限りの廃墟で、
空は真っ黒です。
24山々は震え、揺れ動いていました。
25なおもよく見ると、人々はいなくなり、
鳥は飛び去っていました。
26よく肥えた谷間は荒野となり、
町という町はことごとく、破壊され、
神の激しい憤りによって押しつぶされていました。
27滅ぼせという主の命令が、
全地に行き渡っているのです。
しかし、神は宣言します。
「それでも、わたしの民はほんの少しだけ残る。
28地は嘆き悲しみ、天は真っ暗になる。
わたしが、滅ぼせとの勅令を出したからだ。
わたしはいったん決心したことは、絶対に変更しない。」
29町中の者は
近づいて来る軍隊の行進の音におびえ、逃げ出します。
草むらに隠れ、山へ逃げます。
住民は恐ろしさのあまり、われ先にと逃げるので、
町にはだれもいなくなります。
30どうして晴れ着をまとい、
宝石を身につけ、飾り立てるのですか。
そんなことは、何の役にも立ちません。
同盟軍はあなたがたをさげすみ、殺してしまいます。
31「わたしは、初産の女の陣痛のような、
大きなうめき声を聞いた。
それは、殺そうとする者の前にひれ伏し、
あえぎながら助けを請う、わたしの民の叫びだ。
1“If you, Israel, will return,
then return to me,”
declares the Lord.
“If you put your detestable idols out of my sight
and no longer go astray,
2and if in a truthful, just and righteous way
you swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’
then the nations will invoke blessings by him
and in him they will boast.”
3This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem:
“Break up your unplowed ground
and do not sow among thorns.
4Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
circumcise your hearts,
you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
or my wrath will flare up and burn like fire
because of the evil you have done—
burn with no one to quench it.
Disaster From the North
5“Announce in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say:
‘Sound the trumpet throughout the land!’
Cry aloud and say:
‘Gather together!
Let us flee to the fortified cities!’
6Raise the signal to go to Zion!
Flee for safety without delay!
For I am bringing disaster from the north,
even terrible destruction.”
7A lion has come out of his lair;
a destroyer of nations has set out.
He has left his place
to lay waste your land.
Your towns will lie in ruins
without inhabitant.
8So put on sackcloth,
lament and wail,
for the fierce anger of the Lord
has not turned away from us.
9“In that day,” declares the Lord,
“the king and the officials will lose heart,
the priests will be horrified,
and the prophets will be appalled.”
10Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’ when the sword is at our throats!”
11At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse; 12a wind too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments against them.”
13Look! He advances like the clouds,
his chariots come like a whirlwind,
his horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us! We are ruined!
14Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart and be saved.
How long will you harbor wicked thoughts?
15A voice is announcing from Dan,
proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.
16“Tell this to the nations,
proclaim concerning Jerusalem:
‘A besieging army is coming from a distant land,
raising a war cry against the cities of Judah.
17They surround her like men guarding a field,
because she has rebelled against me,’ ”
declares the Lord.
18“Your own conduct and actions
have brought this on you.
This is your punishment.
How bitter it is!
How it pierces to the heart!”
19Oh, my anguish, my anguish!
I writhe in pain.
Oh, the agony of my heart!
My heart pounds within me,
I cannot keep silent.
For I have heard the sound of the trumpet;
I have heard the battle cry.
20Disaster follows disaster;
the whole land lies in ruins.
In an instant my tents are destroyed,
my shelter in a moment.
21How long must I see the battle standard
and hear the sound of the trumpet?
22“My people are fools;
they do not know me.
They are senseless children;
they have no understanding.
They are skilled in doing evil;
they know not how to do good.”
23I looked at the earth,
and it was formless and empty;
and at the heavens,
and their light was gone.
24I looked at the mountains,
and they were quaking;
all the hills were swaying.
25I looked, and there were no people;
every bird in the sky had flown away.
26I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;
all its towns lay in ruins
before the Lord, before his fierce anger.
27This is what the Lord says:
“The whole land will be ruined,
though I will not destroy it completely.
28Therefore the earth will mourn
and the heavens above grow dark,
because I have spoken and will not relent,
I have decided and will not turn back.”
29At the sound of horsemen and archers
every town takes to flight.
Some go into the thickets;
some climb up among the rocks.
All the towns are deserted;
no one lives in them.
30What are you doing, you devastated one?
Why dress yourself in scarlet
and put on jewels of gold?
Why highlight your eyes with makeup?
You adorn yourself in vain.
Your lovers despise you;
they want to kill you.
31I hear a cry as of a woman in labor,
a groan as of one bearing her first child—
the cry of Daughter Zion gasping for breath,
stretching out her hands and saying,
“Alas! I am fainting;
my life is given over to murderers.”
