1すると主は、こう私に語りました。「たとえモーセとサムエルがわたしの前に立ち、この国の民のために嘆願しても、わたしは彼らを助けない。彼らのことなど放っておきなさい。わたしの目の届かない所へ追い払うのだ。 2もし彼らがおまえに、どこへ行ったらいいのかと尋ねたら、わたしがこう言ったと告げなさい。
死に定められた者は死に、
剣で殺される運命にある者は剣に、
ききんに定められた者はききんに、
捕虜になる者は捕虜に。
3わたしは彼らのために、四種類の罰し方を決めておく。切り殺す剣、食いちぎる犬、残った物をきれいに平らげるはげたかと野獣だ。 4ユダの王、ヒゼキヤの子マナセがエルサレムで行った悪事のために、おまえたちを厳しく罰する。おまえたちの身に起こることは、世界中の人々に、鳥肌が立つほどの恐怖を与える。
5エルサレムよ。
だれが、おまえのために心を痛めて泣くだろうか。
だれが、おまえの安否を尋ねるだろうか。
6おまえはわたしを捨て、わたしに背いた。
だからわたしは、おまえを打ちすえようと、
こぶしを振り上げる。
おまえに立ち直る機会を与えるのがいやになったのだ。
7おまえを町の門でふるいにかけ、
おまえが大切にしている物をみな奪い取る。
わたしの民は悪の道を振り切って
わたしに立ち返ろうとしないので、彼らを滅ぼす。
8未亡人の数は数えきれなくなる。
わたしは真昼に若い男を死に渡し、母親を嘆かせる。
彼らに突然、苦痛と恐怖を与える。
9七人の子をもつ母親は、
息子がみな死ぬので半狂乱になる。
昼なのに、目の前は真っ暗だ。
子どもがみな殺されるので、
子どもがない女になり果てて恥をかく。」
10その時、エレミヤはこう言いました。
「お母さん、何ということでしょう。
こんな悲しい思いをするくらいなら、
生まれてすぐ死んでしまえばよかったのに。
どこへ行っても、私は憎まれ者です。
きびしく返済を迫ったことも、
借りた物を返さなかったこともないのに、
だれもかれも私をのろいます。
11彼らがのろうままにしておこう。
主よ。あなたは、敵対する彼らのために
私がどんなにとりなし、
どんなに助命を嘆願したかをご存じです。」
12-13「北の国の鉄や青銅のかんぬきは、
どうしても壊れない。
同じように、この国の民の強情な心も、
砕くことはできない。
わたしへの罪のために、
おまえたちの富と財宝を戦利品として敵に与える。
14敵がおまえたちを捕虜とし、
知らない国へ連れて行くにまかせる。
わたしの怒りは火のように燃え上がり、
おまえたちを焼き尽くす。」
15これに答えて、エレミヤが言いました。
「主よ。私がこんなに苦しんでいるのは、
神のためであることを、あなたはご存じです。
あなたのおことばを伝えたので、
人々は私を迫害します。
どうか、私が彼らの手にかかって殺されることが
ありませんように。
私を彼らの強い力から救い出し、
彼らにふさわしい罰を与えてください。
16神のおことばは、私をしっかり支えます。
それは、飢え渇いた私のたましいにとっての食物です。
私の重い心に喜びをもたらし、
楽しみで満たしてくれます。
主よ。私は、神の預言者にされたことを
誇りに思います。
17-18私は、笑いさざめく彼らの宴会に
列席しませんでした。
神の御手のもとに一人で座っています。
彼らの罪ために、心は憤りで張り裂けんばかりです。
ところが神は、いざという時に
私を助けてくれませんでした。
迫害をやめさせてくれなかったのです。
彼らは、私に害を加える手を、
ただのひと時も止めないのでしょうか。
神の助けは、ある時は水があふれ、
ある時は干上がってしまう谷川のように、
あてにならないものです。」
19神はこう答えました。
「そのような愚かなことを言ってはならない。
分別のあることばを語りなさい。
おまえが、前のようにわたしに頼るようになれば、
わたしの代弁者にしておく。
おまえが彼らに影響を与えるべきであって、
彼らの影響を受けてはならない。
20彼らは、高い城壁に向かって攻撃をしかける
軍隊のようにおまえと戦うが、どうしても勝てない。
わたしが味方について、おまえを守り、
救い出すからだ。
21わたしは必ず、
悪人どもからおまえを助け出し、
彼らの無慈悲な手からおまえを救う。」
1Then the Lord said to me: “Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people. Send them away from my presence! Let them go! 2And if they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says:
“ ‘Those destined for death, to death;
those for the sword, to the sword;
those for starvation, to starvation;
those for captivity, to captivity.’
3“I will send four kinds of destroyers against them,” declares the Lord, “the sword to kill and the dogs to drag away and the birds and the wild animals to devour and destroy. 4I will make them abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what Manasseh son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.
5“Who will have pity on you, Jerusalem?
Who will mourn for you?
Who will stop to ask how you are?
6You have rejected me,” declares the Lord.
“You keep on backsliding.
So I will reach out and destroy you;
I am tired of holding back.
7I will winnow them with a winnowing fork
at the city gates of the land.
I will bring bereavement and destruction on my people,
for they have not changed their ways.
8I will make their widows more numerous
than the sand of the sea.
At midday I will bring a destroyer
against the mothers of their young men;
suddenly I will bring down on them
anguish and terror.
9The mother of seven will grow faint
and breathe her last.
Her sun will set while it is still day;
she will be disgraced and humiliated.
I will put the survivors to the sword
before their enemies,”
declares the Lord.
10Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,
a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!
I have neither lent nor borrowed,
yet everyone curses me.
11The Lord said,
“Surely I will deliver you for a good purpose;
surely I will make your enemies plead with you
in times of disaster and times of distress.
12“Can a man break iron—
iron from the north—or bronze?
13“Your wealth and your treasures
I will give as plunder, without charge,
because of all your sins
throughout your country.
14I will enslave you to your enemies
in15:14 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint and Syriac (see also 17:4); most Hebrew manuscripts I will cause your enemies to bring you / into a land you do not know,
for my anger will kindle a fire
that will burn against you.”
15Lord, you understand;
remember me and care for me.
Avenge me on my persecutors.
You are long-suffering—do not take me away;
think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.
16When your words came, I ate them;
they were my joy and my heart’s delight,
for I bear your name,
Lord God Almighty.
17I never sat in the company of revelers,
never made merry with them;
I sat alone because your hand was on me
and you had filled me with indignation.
18Why is my pain unending
and my wound grievous and incurable?
You are to me like a deceptive brook,
like a spring that fails.
19Therefore this is what the Lord says:
“If you repent, I will restore you
that you may serve me;
if you utter worthy, not worthless, words,
you will be my spokesman.
Let this people turn to you,
but you must not turn to them.
20I will make you a wall to this people,
a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you
but will not overcome you,
for I am with you
to rescue and save you,”
declares the Lord.
21“I will save you from the hands of the wicked
and deliver you from the grasp of the cruel.”
