1エペソの町に住む、主に忠実な、愛する信徒たちへ。神に選ばれてキリスト・イエスの使徒となったパウロが、この手紙を送ります。 2どうか、父なる神と主イエス・キリストから与えられる恵みと平安が、あなたがたのものとなりますように。
はるか昔からの神の計画
3主イエス・キリストの父なる神がほめたたえられますように。神は、天上のあらゆる祝福をもって、私たちを祝福してくださいました。それは、私たちがキリストのものとなっているからです。 4神はこの世界をお造りになる前から、私たちを、ご自分のものとして選んでくださいました。そして、神は私たちを、ご自分の目から見て、何一つ欠点のない、きよい者にしようとお定めになりました。 5神の御心は、イエス・キリストを遣わし、その死によって、私たちを神の家族の一員として迎えることでした。 6神こそ、いっさいの賞賛を受けるべきお方です。神は、驚くばかりの恵みと愛とを豊かに注いでくださいました。それは、私たちが、神の最愛のひとり子につながる者となったからです。
7神の愛は、そのひとり子の血を流し、私たちの罪を帳消しにしてくださるほど大きいのです。この愛によって私たちは救われました。 8神は私たちに豊かな恵みをあふれるほど注ぎ、私たちをよく理解し、何が最善であるかを考えた上、 9キリストを遣わすというご計画を知らせてくださいました。その計画は、はるか昔から神の愛のうちに決定されていたことでした。 10それは、時が来れば、天でも地でもあらゆるものが、キリストのもとに一つにまとめられるということです。 11そればかりでなく、神のご計画のままに、神のものとなるように最初から選ばれていた私たちは、神が喜んでくださる存在となっています。 12なぜ神は、このようになさったのでしょう。それは、最初からキリストを信じ、望みをおいていた私たちが、こんなにもすばらしい恵みを見て、神をほめたたえるためなのです。
13このキリストによって、あなたがたも救いを約束する福音を聞き、キリストを信じるようになりました。そして、キリストに属する者であるという証印を、聖霊によって押していただきました。 14私たちのうちに住まわれる聖霊は、神が約束のものをほんとうに与えてくださるという保証です。私たちに押された聖霊の証印は、神がすでに私たちを買い取り、ご自分のもとに引き取ってくださっていることを保証するのです。これが、栄光の神をほめたたえる、もう一つの理由です。
15こういうわけで、私は、主イエスに対するあなたがたの信仰と、ほかの人たちに対する愛とを耳にして以来、 16絶えず神に感謝してきました。そしていつも、あなたがたのために、こう祈り求めています。 17どうか、主イエス・キリストの神、すなわち栄光の父が、あなたがたに知恵を与えて、キリストがどのようなお方か、何をしてくださったかを、正しく、はっきりと理解させてくださいますように。 18また、心にあふれるほどの光が与えられて、神があなたがたを召して与えようとされる将来を、はっきり見きわめることができますように。 19また、信じる者を助ける神の力が、どれほど偉大であるかを知ることができますように。
20-21この同じ偉大な力が、キリストを死者の中から復活させ、ほかのどんな王、支配者、権力者、指導者よりもはるかに高い、天の神の右の座につかせたのです。このキリストの栄誉は、この世だけでなく、次に来る世でも、他のすべてにはるかにまさって輝かしいものです。 22そして神は、すべてをキリストの足の下に従わせ、キリストを教会の最高のかしらとされました。 23ですから教会は、キリストの体であって、すべてを造り、すべてを満たすキリストの霊が満ちあふれるところです。

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. With all wisdom and understanding, 9he1:8,9 Or us with all wisdom and understanding. 9 And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
11In him we were also chosen,1:11 Or were made heirs having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
Thanksgiving and Prayer
15For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, 16I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit1:17 Or a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
