異教徒との結婚の問題とエズラの祈り
1ところが、そんなある日、ユダヤ人の指導者たちが訪ねて来て、驚くべき報告をしました。ユダヤ人の中には、この地に移り住んだ異教徒のカナン人、ヘテ人、ペリジ人、エブス人、アモン人、モアブ人、エジプト人、エモリ人などの忌むべき風習に染まっている者が多くいるというのです。 2イスラエル人が異教徒の女と結婚し、息子たちにも異教徒の嫁をとらせていました。聖なる神の民は、こうした結婚によって堕落していたのです。しかも、その張本人が指導者たち自身でした。
3これを聞いて、あまりのことに私は着物を裂き、髪もひげも引き抜き、打ちのめされた思いで座り込んでしまいました。 4すると、イスラエルの神を恐れる多くの者が、人々の罪のことで私のもとにやって来て、夕方のささげ物の時まで、私のそばを離れようとしませんでした。
5とうとう私は、どうしたらよいかわからないまま主の前に出ました。そして、ひざまずき、主に向かって両手を差し伸べ、 6叫びました。「ああ神様、なんと申し上げたらよいのでしょう。恥ずかしくてとても顔向けできません。私たちの罪は背丈よりも高く積もり、悪行は天空のように際限なく広がっています。 7私どもの歴史はすべて罪の歴史であり、歴代の王や祭司が異教徒の王の手で葬られたのもこのためです。そのあげく捕囚の身となり、略奪をほしいままにされ、はずかしめを受けました。ごらんのとおりです。 8しかし、あなたは今、しばしの平和を与えてくださいました。私たち少数の者が捕囚からエルサレムに戻ることをお許しになったのです。奴隷の身に、しばしの喜びと新しいいのちを与えてくださいました。 9確かに、私たちは奴隷でした。しかし、愛と恵みに富むあなたはそのまま見捨ててはおかず、ペルシヤの王たちが私たちに好意を抱くようにしてくださったのです。彼らは神殿の再建事業を助け、エルサレムをユダの要塞の町として認めてくれました。
10それにもかかわらず、神様、こんなことになってしまい、なんと申し上げたらよろしいのでしょう。またしても、あなたを捨て、律法を破ってしまいました。 11私たちの国は、ここに住んでいた民の忌むべき風習によってすっかり汚れていると、預言者たちが警告していました。この地は端から端まで腐りきっています。 12だからこそ、娘は土着の者と結婚してはならず、息子は土着の娘を妻に迎えてはならない、ささいなことでもこの地の国々とかかわってはならないと、あなたはお命じになっていたのです。そうすれば、国は繁栄し、永久にその富を子孫に伝えることができると約束してくださいました。 13かつて、私たちの犯した罪の重さに比べてずっと軽い罰とはいえ、捕囚という罰を受けたにもかかわらず、 14こうして帰国してみれば、またまたあなたの命令に背き、忌むべきことを行う民と結婚しています。今度こそ、このひと握りの生き残りの者さえも、あなたの怒りによって滅ぼし尽くされることでしょう。 15ああ神様、神様の正しさでさばかれれば、御前に立つこの罪の身に、ひと筋の希望もあろうはずがありません。」
1Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass. 3And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. 4Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.
5¶ And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,9.5 heaviness: or, affliction 6And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.9.6 trespass: or, guiltiness 7Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. 8And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.9.8 space: Heb. moment9.8 a nail: or, a pin: that is, a constant and sure abode 9For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.9.9 to repair: Heb. to set up 10And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, 11Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.9.11 by: Heb. by the hand of9.11 from…: Heb. from mouth to mouth 12Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever. 13And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;9.13 hast punished…: Heb. hast withheld beneath our iniquities 14Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping? 15O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
