再建工事の中断
1ユダとベニヤミンに敵対する人たちは、この神殿再建のことを聞きつけると、 2ゼルバベルや、ほかの指導者たちを訪ねて来て、こう切り出しました。「あなたがたの神様のことなら、私たちも放ってはおけない。ひとつ、手伝わせてくれないか。私たちも、アッシリヤ王エサル・ハドンの手で、ここに住むようにされて以来、神様にいけにえをささげてきたのだから。」
3しかし、ゼルバベルやヨシュアをはじめ指導者たちは、口をそろえて断りました。「いや、それには及びません。イスラエルの神様の神殿は、クロス王の命令のとおり、イスラエル人の手で再建すべきです。」
4-5すると、その地の住民は使いを立ててクロス王に偽りの報告書を送り、イスラエル人の気をくじこうとしたり、脅したりしました。さらに、議官を買収して計画に反対させ、再建中止に追い込もうとまでしました。この種の妨害は、クロス王の時代からダリヨス王の治世まで、やむことがありませんでした。
6のちに、アハシュエロス王が即位すると、彼らはユダとエルサレムの人々を非難する手紙を送りました。 7そして、アルタシャスタ王の時代にも同じことが行われ、ビシュラム、ミテレダテ、タベエルらの一味がアラム語で手紙をしたため、それが翻訳されて王に差し出されたのです。 8-9この件にかかわった者は、行政官レフム、書記官シムシャイ、数名の裁判官、各地方の役人、ペルシヤ人、バビロニヤ人、エレク人、シュシャンの人々、 10そのほか、大王オスナパルによって、エルサレムやサマリヤ、ユーフラテス川西方の地域に移住させられた諸国の民でした。
11そのアルタシャスタ王へあてた手紙とは、次のようなものでした。
「ユーフラテス川の向こう側に住む忠実なしもべたちが、ごあいさつ申し上げます。 12恐れながら、あなたの国から帰国したユダヤ人たちは、エルサレムの復興を図っております。この町がいかに反抗的で邪悪であったかは、歴史の証明するところです。すでに城壁が築かれ、神殿の土台も補修されました。 13しかし、町の再建はあなたのためにはならないとご承知おきください。ユダヤ人が納税を拒否するのは目に見えております。 14私どもはあなたのおかげで安らかに暮らせるのです。こんなことでご威信が傷つくのを見て、どうして黙っていられましょう。それで、こうしてお耳に入れようとしたしだいです。 15なにとぞ、古い文書をお調べください。この町が過去にどれほど反抗的であったか、また事実、支配下に収めようとした王や国の手にかみつくような騒ぎばかりを起こし続けたため、ついに滅ぼされてしまったことをおわかりいただけると存じます。 16万一この町が復興し、城壁が完成したが最後、もはやユーフラテス川の西方の領土はないものと、おあきらめいただかなければならないでしょう。」
17王からは、行政官レフム、書記官シムシャイ、そのほかサマリヤおよびユーフラテス川西方に住む、主だった人々に返書が送られました。
18「あなたがたの手紙は読ませてもらった。 19記録も調べさせた。確かにエルサレムは、歴代の王に対して暴動の温床となり、反抗や騒乱が日常化した町であることがわかった。 20また同時に、かつてエルサレムでは偉大な王たちが君臨し、ユーフラテス川西方の全地域を治め、ばく大な貢ぎ物、関税、税金を手にしていたこともわかった。 21そういうわけで、さらに詳細な調査を終えるまで、町の再建の中止を命じることにする。 22手遅れになって、事態の収拾も危ぶまれるようにはならないよう、くれぐれも気をつけよ。」
23王の手紙に目を通したレフムとシムシャイはエルサレムへ急行し、武力で強引に再建作業を中止させました。 24結局、工事はペルシヤ王ダリヨスの第二年まで中断されたのでした。
