栄誉を受けるモルデカイ
1-2さてその夜のこと、王はどうしても寝つくことができませんでした。しばらく読書でもしようかと、書庫から王国の記録文書を持って来させました。読み進むうち、ある項目に目が行きました。門の警備に当たっていた役人ビグタンとテレシュが企てた、王の暗殺未遂事件のところです。計画が未然に防げたのはモルデカイの手柄だとありました。
3王は、そばにいた者に尋ねました。「このモルデカイに何かほうびを取らせたか。」「何も取らせてはおりません。」 4「誰か外庭で勤務についている者はいないか。」王がこう言った時、例の絞首台にモルデカイをつるす許可を得ようと、ハマンが城の外庭にさしかかりました。 5家来は答えました。「ハマン様がお見えです。」「ちょうどよい。ここへ呼べ。」
6ハマンが来ると、王はさっそく話を切り出しました。「ほうびを取らせたい者がいるのだが、どんな栄誉を与えたらよいものか。」ハマンは心のうちで思いました。「きっと私のことだ。私以外に、陛下が栄誉を与えたいと思う者などいるはずがないではないか。」 7-8そこで、わくわくしながら意見を述べました。「陛下ご着用の王衣、それにご愛馬と王冠をお取りそろえください。 9そして、最も身分の高い貴族の一人にその人の世話をさせてください。つまり陛下の服を着せ、ご愛馬に乗せ、くつわを取らせて通りを引いて行かせるのです。その時、その者に『陛下のお心にかなう人は、このような栄誉を受けるのだ！』と皆に聞こえるように言わせてはいかがでしょう。」 10「名案だ！」 王は思わずひざを打ちました。「大至急、王衣を持って来させ、私の馬を引いて来て、そのとおりにしてくれ。栄誉を受けるのは宮廷務めのユダヤ人モルデカイだ。今言ったことを、そっくりそのまま実行するのだ。」
11ハマンはしぶしぶモルデカイに王衣を着せ、王の愛馬に乗せ、くつわを取って通りを引き歩きながら、「王のお心にかなう人は、このような栄誉を受けるのだ！」と叫びました。 12モルデカイは勤務に戻りましたが、おさまらないのはハマンです。何とも言えないみじめな気持ちで家に逃げ帰りました。 13妻のゼレシュや取り巻きたちに事の次第を話すと、一同は頭をかかえるばかりでした。「まずいですね。モルデカイがユダヤ人だと陛下に知れた以上、あの男を亡き者にする計画は台無しです。それどころか、いつまでもモルデカイを目の敵にしていたら、かえって命取りになります。」
14皆があれこれ知恵をしぼり、善後策を講じている最中に、王の使いが来て、エステルの設けた宴へ出向くようモルデカイをせき立てました。
Mordecai honoured
1That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him. 2It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.
3‘What honour and recognition has Mordecai received for this?’ the king asked.
‘Nothing has been done for him,’ his attendants answered.
4The king said, ‘Who is in the court?’ Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the palace to speak to the king about impaling Mordecai on the pole he had set up for him.
5His attendants answered, ‘Haman is standing in the court.’
‘Bring him in,’ the king ordered.
6When Haman entered, the king asked him, ‘What should be done for the man the king delights to honour?’
Now Haman thought to himself, ‘Who is there that the king would rather honour than me?’ 7So he answered the king, ‘For the man the king delights to honour, 8let them bring a royal robe the king has worn and a horse the king has ridden, one with a royal crest placed on its head. 9Then let the robe and horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them robe the man the king delights to honour, and lead him on the horse through the city streets, proclaiming before him, “This is what is done for the man the king delights to honour!” ’
10‘Go at once,’ the king commanded Haman. ‘Get the robe and the horse and do just as you have suggested for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything you have recommended.’
11So Haman got the robe and the horse. He robed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city streets, proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king delights to honour!’
12Afterwards Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief, 13and told Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him.
His advisors and his wife Zeresh said to him, ‘Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him – you will surely come to ruin!’ 14While they were still talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman away to the banquet Esther had prepared.
