1Here, U bent de enige
die het recht heeft wraak te nemen.
Kom met uw licht naar ons toe.
2U bent de grote rechter van deze aarde.
Sta op en spreek uw oordeel uit
over alle hoogmoedige mensen.
3Hoelang mogen de ongelovigen
nog blij zijn dat zij het wel alleen kunnen, Here?
4Zij spreken smalend en hooghartig,
al die zondaars denken
dat zij het hoogste woord kunnen voeren.
5Zij lopen uw volk onder de voet, Here.
Zij onderdrukken uw land.
6Zij plegen moord en doodslag
onder de vreemdelingen, de weduwen en wezen.
7Zij denken bij zichzelf:
‘De Here ziet het toch niet,
ach, Jakobs God heeft wel iets anders te doen.’
8Laten alle onverstandigen maar eens opletten.
Dwazen, ga uw hersens maar eens gebruiken!
9Denkt u nu echt dat God, die het oor maakte,
Zelf niet horen kan?
Of dat de Maker van het oog
Zelf niets ziet?
10Hij leert de volken hoe zij moeten leven,
daarom zal Hij hen ook straffen.
Hij geeft de mensen immers alles wat zij nodig hebben?
11De Here weet precies wat in de mensen omgaat:
het is allemaal nutteloos.
12Gelukkig is de man die door U wordt getuchtigd, Here.
Die van U onderricht krijgt in uw wetten.
13Hij zal rust ervaren in moeilijke tijden,
zelfs als zijn vijand een val voor hem opzet.
14De Here laat zijn volk niet in de steek,
Hij blijft naar hen omzien.
15Er zal weer eerlijk recht worden gesproken
en alle oprechte mensen zullen zich daarbij aansluiten.
16Wie verdedigt mij tegen deze slechte mensen?
Wie komt voor mij op tegen deze zondaars?
17Als de Here mij niet had geholpen,
had niemand meer iets van mij gehoord.
18Juist toen ik dacht dat ik het niet meer aankon,
ervoer ik de kracht van uw goedheid en liefde, Here.
19Terwijl allerlei gedachten in mij omgingen,
waren het juist uw troostwoorden die mij opbeurden.
20Zou U iets te maken hebben met de plaats waar de zonde zetelt?
Waar men zogenaamd uit eerlijkheid het grootste onheil aanricht?
21Dat soort mensen loert op het leven van de oprechte mensen,
zij veroordelen onschuldigen.
22Maar ik vond mijn toevlucht bij de Here,
Hij was mij tot een burcht.
Mijn God is mijn rots.
23Hij heeft hun het kwaad vergolden.
Hij vernietigde hen in hun zonde.
Hij is de Here, onze God.
Psalm 94
1The Lord is a God who punishes.
Since you are the one who punishes, come and show your anger.
2Judge of the earth, rise up.
Pay back proud people for what they have done.
3Lord, how long will those who are evil be glad?
How long will they be full of joy?
4Proud words pour out of their mouths.
All those who do evil are always bragging.
5Lord, they crush your people.
They treat badly those who belong to you.
6They kill outsiders. They kill widows.
They murder children whose fathers have died.
7They say, “The Lord doesn’t see what’s happening.
The God of Jacob doesn’t pay any attention to it.”
8You who aren’t wise, pay attention.
You foolish people, when will you become wise?
9Does he who made the ear not hear?
Does he who formed the eye not see?
10Does he who corrects nations not punish?
Does he who teaches human beings not know anything?
11The Lord knows what people think.
He knows that their thoughts don’t amount to anything.
12Lord, blessed is the person you correct.
Blessed is the person you teach from your law.
13You give them rest from times of trouble,
until a pit is dug to trap sinners.
14The Lord won’t say no to his people.
He will never desert those who belong to him.
15He will again judge people in keeping with what is right.
All those who have honest hearts will follow the right way.
16Who will rise up for me against sinful people?
Who will stand up for me against those who do evil?
17Suppose the Lord had not helped me.
Then I would soon have been lying quietly in the grave.
18I said, “My foot is slipping.”
But Lord, your faithful love kept me from falling.
19I was very worried.
But your comfort brought me joy.
20Can you have anything to do with rulers who aren’t fair?
Can those who make laws that cause suffering be friends of yours?
21Evil people join together against those who do what is right.
They sentence to death those who aren’t guilty of doing anything wrong.
22But the Lord has become like a fort to me.
My God is my rock. I go to him for safety.
23He will pay them back for their sins.
He will destroy them for their evil acts.
The Lord our God will destroy them.
