2De Here is groot en alle lof komt Hem toe
in de stad van God op zijn heilige berg.
3De berg Sion is zo mooi doordat zij zo hoog gelegen is,
een vreugde voor ieder die haar ziet.
Zafon is werkelijk Sion,
waar de stad van onze grote Koning ligt.
4In de paleizen van Jeruzalem maakt God Zich kenbaar,
Hij beschermt ons.
5Let maar eens op:
er was een samenzwering van koningen,
met elkaar trokken zij op naar Jeruzalem.
6Maar zodra zij er kwamen en het zagen,
waren zij verbijsterd.
Van schrik sloegen ze op de vlucht.
7Zij sidderden angstig als een vrouw die een kind baart.
8U laat de schepen van Tarsis door de oostenwind vergaan.
9Eerst hadden wij ervan gehoord,
maar later zagen wij het zelf
in de stad van de Almachtige Here,
in de stad van onze God:
Hij houdt de stad in stand.
10Steeds opnieuw, o God, herinneren wij ons uw goedheid
en trouw wanneer wij in uw tempel zijn.
11De eer die U toekomt, is net als uw naam, o God,
zo groot dat die reikt tot aan het einde der aarde.
U bent de bron van de rechtvaardigheid.
12De berg Sion is blij
en de dochters van Juda juichen over uw rechtvaardigheid.
13Loop maar eens om Jeruzalem heen
en tel haar wachttorens.
14Kijk eens goed naar haar muren en loop door haar paleizen.
Dan kunt u het aan uw nakomelingen vertellen:
15kijk, zo is God. Hij is voor eeuwig onze God
en tot de dag dat wij sterven
is Hij bij ons en wijst ons de weg.

1Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise,
in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
2Beautiful in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon48:2 Zaphon was the most sacred mountain of the Canaanites. is Mount Zion,
the city of the Great King.
3God is in her citadels;
he has shown himself to be her fortress.
4When the kings joined forces,
when they advanced together,
5they saw her and were astounded;
they fled in terror.
6Trembling seized them there,
pain like that of a woman in labour.
7You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish
shattered by an east wind.
8As we have heard,
so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
for ever.48:8 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here.
9Within your temple, O God,
we meditate on your unfailing love.
10Like your name, O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11Mount Zion rejoices,
the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.
12Walk about Zion, go round her,
count her towers,
13consider well her ramparts,
view her citadels,
that you may tell of them
to the next generation.
14For this God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide even to the end.
