De herbouw van de stadsmuur
1De hogepriester Eljasib en de andere priesters herbouwden de muur tot de Meatoren en de Hananeëltoren. Zij herstelden de Schaapspoort, brachten deuren aan en wijdden het geheel. 2Mannen uit Jericho waren naast hen bezig en daarnaast werkte Zakkur, de zoon van Imri. 3De zonen van Senaä herbouwden de Vispoort. Er kwamen een zoldering, deuren, sluitbalken en grendels in. 4Meremoth, de zoon van Uria, de zoon van Hakkoz, herstelde het volgende stuk muur. Mesullam, de zoon van Berechja, de zoon van Mesezabeël, en Zadok, de zoon van Baäna, werkten naast hem. 5Daar weer naast waren mannen uit Tekoa bezig, maar hun leiders staken geen hand uit om hen te helpen.
6Jojada, de zoon van Paséah, en Mesullam, de zoon van Besodja, repareerden de Oude Poort. Zij maakten een zoldering en brachten deuren, sluitbalken en grendels aan. 7Naast hen werkten Melatja uit Gibeon, Jador uit Meronoth en mannen uit Gibeon en Mispa, die onder het bestuur ten westen van de Eufraat vielen. 8Uzziël, de zoon van Harhaja, die goudsmid van beroep was, wijdde zich ook aan de herbouw van de muur en naast hem was Hananja, een zalfbereider, bezig. Vanaf dit punt tot de Brede Muur hoefde niets te worden gerepareerd. 9Refaja, de zoon van Hur, stadsbestuurder van een deel van Jeruzalem, werkte even verderop. 10Jedaja, de zoon van Harumaf, was bezig tegenover zijn eigen huis, met naast hem Hattus, de zoon van Hasabneja. 11De Bakoventoren plus een deel van de muur werden gerepareerd door Malkia, de zoon van Harim, en Hassub, de zoon van Pahath-Moab. 12Sallum, de zoon van Hallóhes, en zijn dochters herstelden een volgend gedeelte. Hij was de stadsbestuurder van een ander deel van Jeruzalem. 13De Dalpoort werd in oude staat teruggebracht door Hanun en de burgers van Zanóah. Deze poort kreeg deuren, sluitbalken en grendels. Zij herstelden ook vierhonderdvijftig meter muur tot de Aspoort. 14Malkia, de zoon van Rechab, bestuurder van het gebied Bet-Kérem, herbouwde de Aspoort en bracht deuren, sluitbalken en grendels aan. 15Sallum, de zoon van Kolhozé, bestuurder van het gebied Mispa, herbouwde de Bronpoort, zette er een nieuw dak op en plaatste deuren, sluitbalken en grendels. Bovendien repareerde hij de muur van de vijver Siloam in de richting van de koninklijke tuin. Hij verrichtte tevens reparaties aan de trappen die leidden naar het gedeelte van Jeruzalem dat ‘Stad van David’ heet.
16Verderop werkte Nehemia, de zoon van Azbuk, bestuurder van het halve gebied Bet-Zur. Hij was bezig met reparaties tot aan de koninklijke begraafplaats, het waterreservoir en het gebouw van de legeropleiding. 17Daarnaast werkte een groep Levieten onder toezicht van Rehum, de zoon van Bani. Dan kwam Hasabja, bestuurder van het halve gebied Kehila. Hij hield toezicht op de bouw van de stadsmuur in zijn eigen gebied. 18Verderop werkten hun familieleden onder leiding van Bavvai, de zoon van Henadad, bestuurder van de andere helft van Kehila. 19Ezer, de zoon van Jesua en tevens bestuurder van Mispa, herstelde een stuk stadsmuur tegenover de wapenopslagplaats, waar de muur een hoek maakt. 20Naast hem was Baruch, de zoon van Zabbai, ijverig bezig de muur te repareren van die hoek tot de ingang van het huis van de hogepriester Eljasib. 21Vanaf dit punt tot voorbij Eljasibs huis bracht Meremoth, de zoon van Uria, de zoon van Hakkoz, de muur in zijn oude staat terug. 22Aan het volgende gedeelte werkten de priesters die afkomstig waren uit de streek buiten Jeruzalem. 23Benjamin, Hassub en Azarja, de zoon van Maäseja, de zoon van Ananja, repareerden gedeelten naast hun eigen huis. 24Binnuï, de zoon van Henadad, was bezig vanaf Azarjaʼs huis tot de hoek. 25En Palal, de zoon van Uzai, was aan het werk vanaf die hoek tot de fundamenten van de hoge toren van het koninklijk paleis, naast de tuin van de gevangenis. Daarnaast werkte Pedaja, de zoon van Paros. 26De tempelknechten die op de heuvel Ofel woonden, repareerden de muur tot de oostelijk gelegen Waterpoort en de uitspringende toren. 27Vanaf deze toren tot de muur van de Ofel waren mannen uit Tekoa aan het werk. 28De priesters repareerden de muur vanaf de Paardepoort, ieder tegenover zijn eigen huis. 29Op enige afstand daarvan was Zadok, de zoon van Immer, bezig tegenover zijn huis. En op korte afstand van Zadok werkte Semaja, de zoon van Sechanja, de poortwachter van de Oostpoort. 30Hananja, de zoon van Selemja, en Hanun, de zesde zoon van Zalaf, herstelden een volgend stuk. Mesullam, de zoon van Berechja, was tegenover zijn eigen woning bezig. 31Nog weer verderop werkte Malkia, de goudsmid, tot aan het gebouw van de tempelknechten en handelaren, dat tegenover de Wachtpoort ligt. Toen hij daarmee klaar was, ging hij verder met het stuk muur tot de bovenzaal aan de hoek. 32En vanaf die hoek tot de Schaapspoort waren de goudsmeden en handelaars bezig met de herstelwerkzaamheden.
