De raad van Elifaz
1‘Roep toch! Maar wie zal antwoord geven? Tot wie in de hemel kun je je richten?
2De dwaas ergert zich dood en een onverstandige sterft van jaloezie.
3Ik heb zelf gezien hoe het een dwaas goed ging, maar ook hoe plotseling het onheil over hem kwam.
4Zijn kinderen bleven eenzaam en vertrapt achter en er was niemand die voor hen opkwam.
5Zijn oogsten werden door hongerige mensen gestolen, zelfs het koren tussen de dorens, zijn rijkdom was een gemakkelijke prooi voor rovers.
6Want onheil komt niet zomaar uit de aarde opzetten, moeilijkheden groeien niet uit de grond op.
7Maar de mens wordt geboren voor moeite en ellende, net zo zeker als vonken omhoogschieten.
8Ik geef je deze raad: ga naar God en leg Hem de situatie voor.
9Want Hij doet machtige en onbegrijpelijke dingen, Hij verricht ontelbare wonderen.
10Hij geeft regen op de aarde en voorziet de velden van water.
11De nederigen brengt Hij tot aanzien en de bedroefden schenkt Hij geluk.
12Hij doorkruist de plannen van listige mannen, zodat zij die niet kunnen uitvoeren.
13God vangt de wijzen in hun eigen sluwheid, Hij zet een streep door hun plannen.
14Als blinden schuifelen zij door het daglicht, zij zien overdag niet beter dan ʼs nachts.
15God bevrijdt de armen uit de greep van deze onderdrukkers met hun kwaadsprekerij.
16Op die manier krijgen de armen hoop en wordt de goddelozen de mond gesnoerd.
17Hoe benijdenswaardig is een mens die door God streng wordt opgevoed. Wordt daarom niet boos als de Almachtige je om je zonde straft.
18Want nadat Hij wonden heeft toegebracht, verbindt en geneest Hij ze ook weer.
19Steeds weer zal Hij je redden, zodat het kwaad je niet raakt.
20Hij zal je beschermen voor de dood in tijden van honger en redden uit de macht van het zwaard in tijden van oorlog.
21Van kwaadsprekerij zul je niets te vrezen hebben, voor geweld hoef je niet bang te zijn.
22Je zult lachen om oorlogsgeweld en hongersnood, voor wilde dieren van de aarde hoef je niet bang te zijn.
23Ook zul je geen last hebben van stenen bij het ploegen van je akkers. Er zal vrede zijn tussen jou en de gevaarlijke wilde dieren.
24Je zult je geen zorgen hoeven te maken om je huis, er zal niets uit worden gestolen.
25Je zult vele kinderen krijgen en jouw nakomelingen zullen zo talrijk zijn als het gras.
26Pas op hoge leeftijd zul je sterven, evenals het koren zul je niet voortijdig worden geoogst.
27Uit ervaring weet ik dat dit allemaal waar is. Luister naar mijn raad, het is voor je eigen bestwil!’
