De ontfermende liefde van God
1Wie komt daar vanuit Edom aan, uit de stad Bosra, in zijn prachtige donkerrode kledij? Wie is dat in zijn koninklijke gewaden, rustig voortlopend met grootse kracht? ‘Ik ben het, de Here, die uw heil aankondigt, degene die de macht heeft u te redden!’ 2‘Waarom is uw kleding zo rood als van iemand die in de wijnpers de druiven uitperst?’ 3‘Ik heb de wijnpers alleen getreden. Er was niemand die Mij hielp. In mijn toorn heb Ik mijn vijanden als druiven vertrapt. In mijn toorn vertrapte Ik mijn tegenstanders. U ziet hun bloed op mijn kleding. 4Want de tijd is aangebroken dat Ik mijn volk moet wreken, het uit de handen van zijn onderdrukkers moet verlossen. 5Ik keek maar niemand kwam het te hulp, Ik was verbaasd en geschokt. Daarom voerde Ik de wraak alleen uit, zonder hulp velde Ik de vonnissen. 6Ik vernietigde de heidense volken in mijn toorn, Ik bracht hen aan het wankelen en liet hen neerstorten.’
7Ik zal vertellen over de ontfermende liefde van God. Ik zal Hem loven voor alles wat Hij heeft gedaan, ik zal mij verheugen over zijn goedheid tegenover Israël die Hij haar betoonde in zijn genade en liefde.
8Hij zei: ‘Zij zijn toch van Mij, mijn eigen kinderen zullen mijn vertrouwen niet opnieuw beschamen.’ En Hij werd hun redder. 9In al hun onderdrukking werd Hij Zelf onderdrukt en Hij redde hen in eigen persoon. In zijn liefde en medelijden verloste Hij hen, tilde hen op en droeg hen door de jaren heen. 10Maar zij kwamen in opstand tegen Hem en deden zijn Heilige Geest verdriet. Daarom werd Hij hun vijand en vocht Hij persoonlijk tegen hen.
11Toen herinnerden zij zich de dagen van weleer, toen Gods dienaar Mozes zijn volk uit Egypte wegleidde en zij riepen: Waar is Hij die Israël door de zee voerde, met Mozes als hun herder? Waar is de God die zijn Heilige Geest stuurt om onder zijn volk te wonen? 12Waar is Hij wiens machtige kracht de zee voor hen splitste, toen Mozes zijn hand ophief en zijn reputatie voor eeuwig vestigde? 13Wie leidde hen over de bodem van de zee? Net als paarden die door de woestijn rennen, struikelden zij niet. 14Als grazend vee in de dalen, zo gaf de Geest van de Here hun rust. O Here, op die manier bezorgde U Zichzelf een geweldige naam. 15Kijk vanuit de hemel neer en zie ons vanuit uw heilige, glorieuze verblijfplaats. Waar is uw liefde voor ons die U altijd liet zien? Waar zijn nu uw kracht, uw genade en uw medelijden? 16U bent immers nog steeds onze Vader! Abraham en Jakob kennen ons niet, maar U blijft onze vader, onze verlosser van oudsher. 17O Here, waarom liet U ons afdwalen van uw wegen in onze onbuigzaamheid, zodat wij zondigden en ons tegen U keerden? Kom terug en help ons, want wij, die uw eigendom zijn, hebben U zo nodig. 18Hoe kort hebben wij Jeruzalem maar in bezit gehad! En nu hebben onze vijanden haar verwoest. 19O God, waarom behandelt U ons alsof wij uw volk niet zijn, als een heidens volk dat U nooit ‘Here’ noemde?
1Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? 7¶ I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses. 8For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour. 9In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.
10¶ But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. 11Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?63.11 shepherd: or, shepherds 12That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name? 13That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble? 14As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name.
15¶ Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where is thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy bowels and of thy mercies toward me? are they restrained?63.15 the sounding: or, the multitude 16Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.63.16 our redeemer…: or, our redeemer from everlasting is thy name
17¶ O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of thine inheritance. 18The people of thy holiness have possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary. 19We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.63.19 they…: Heb. thy name was not called upon them
