Gods antwoord op gebed
1Luister naar mij, bewoners van verre landen: de Here riep mij, voordat ik werd geboren. Vanuit de schoot van mijn moeder riep Hij mij bij de naam. 2God zal de veroordelingen die ik u laat horen, scherp als zwaarden maken. Hij heeft mij verborgen in de schaduw van zijn hand, ik ben als een scherpe pijl in zijn pijlkoker. 3Hij zei tegen mij: ‘U bent mijn dienaar, Israël. In u zal Ik mijn glorie laten zien!’ 4Ik antwoordde: ‘Maar mijn werk voor hen lijkt zo nutteloos, ik heb mijn krachten voor hen ingezet, maar ik kreeg geen enkele reactie. Mijn beloning laat ik aan God over.’ 5Toen sprak de Here, die mij in de schoot van mijn moeder vormde als zijn dienaar. Hij gaf mij de opdracht zijn volk Israël bij Hem terug te brengen en heeft mij de kracht en het aanzien gegeven om deze taak uit te voeren. 6De Here zei: ‘U zult meer doen dan alleen Israël bij Mij terugbrengen. Ik zal u maken tot een licht voor alle volken van de wereld, om redding te brengen tot in de verste uithoeken van de aarde.’
7De Here, de redder en Heilige van Israël, zegt tegen hem die diep wordt veracht, van wie de mensen een afkeer hebben en die onderworpen is aan aardse heersers: ‘Koningen zullen opstaan als u voorbij komt, prinsen zullen diep buigen, omdat de Here u heeft uitgekozen, Hij, de trouwe Here, de Heilige van Israël, kiest u uit.’
8-9 De Here zegt: ‘Op het goede moment verhoor Ik uw gebed, op de dag van redding kom Ik u te hulp. Ik zal u tegen gevaar beschermen en u als een teken aan Israël geven, als bewijs dat Ik het land Israël weer zal herstellen en het aan zijn oorspronkelijke bewoners zal teruggeven. Via u zeg Ik tegen de gevangenen van de duisternis: kom naar buiten! Ik geef u uw vrijheid terug! Zij zullen overal voedsel vinden, op kale heuvels vinden ze zelfs iets te eten. 10Zij zullen geen honger of dorst lijden, de brandende zon en de schroeiende woestijnwinden zullen hen niet meer bereiken, want de Here zal hen leiden naar waterbronnen. 11Ik zal mijn bergen voor hen tot vlakke paden maken, de wegen zullen dalen overbruggen. 12Kijk, mijn volk zal vanuit het oosten, het noorden en het westen terugkeren.’
13Hemelen zing van blijdschap, jubel, o aarde. Barst uit in een lied, o bergen, want de Here heeft zijn volk getroost en zal medelijden hebben met zijn volk dat zo zwaar verdrukt werd. 14Toch zeggen zij: ‘De Here heeft ons verlaten, Hij is ons vergeten.’ 15Nooit! Kan een moeder haar kleine kind vergeten en niet van haar eigen zoon houden? Ook al zou dat kunnen, dan zou Ik u nog niet vergeten. 16Kijk maar, Ik heb uw naam in mijn handpalm gekerfd, de verwoeste muren van Jeruzalem staan Mij voortdurend voor ogen. 17Uw herbouwers zullen binnenkort komen en allen wegjagen die u verwoestten. 18Kom en zie, de Here zegt: zo waar als Ik leef, al uw vijanden zullen komen om uw slaven te zijn. Zij zullen zijn als uitgestalde juwelen, als de sieraden van een bruid. 19Zelfs de meest troosteloze gedeelten van uw verlaten land zullen spoedig wemelen van uw mensen en uw vijanden die u tot slaven maakten, zullen ver weg zijn. 20De generaties die in ballingschap zijn geboren, zullen terugkomen en zeggen: ‘We hebben meer ruimte nodig! Het is hier overbevolkt!’ 21Dan zult u denken: ‘Wie heeft mij dit allemaal gegeven? Want het merendeel van mijn kinderen was gedood en de rest werd in ballingschap weggevoerd, mij eenzaam achterlatend. Wie bracht hen ter wereld? Wie voedde hen voor mij op?’
22De Here God zegt: ‘Ik zal de vreemde volken een teken geven en zij zullen uw zonen in hun armen en uw dochters op hun schouders bij u terugbrengen. 23Koningen en koninginnen zullen u dienen, zij zullen in al uw behoeften voorzien. Zij zullen tot op de grond voor u buigen en het stof van uw voeten likken, dan zult u weten dat Ik de Here ben. Zij die het van Mij verwachten, zullen nooit beschaamd worden.’
24Wie kan een prooi uit de handen van een machtige man grijpen? Wie kan van een tiran eisen dat hij zijn gevangenen vrijlaat? 25Maar de Here zegt: ‘Zelfs de gevangenen van de machtigste en hardvochtigste tiran zullen worden bevrijd, want Ik zal vechten tegen hen die u bevechten en Ik zal uw kinderen redden. 26Ik zal uw vijanden hun eigen vlees te eten geven en zij zullen dronken worden van de stromen van hun eigen bloed. De hele wereld zal goed weten dat Ik, de Here, uw redder en verlosser ben, de Machtige van Israël.’

As I live, saith the LORD, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a bride doeth. 19For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away. 20The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell. 21Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these?
