Gods belofte van redding
1Toen koning Hizkia de uitslag van het overleg te horen kreeg, scheurde hij zijn kleren als teken van verdriet en trok een boetekleed aan. Hij ging naar de tempel om te bidden. 2Tegelijkertijd stuurde hij zijn hofmaarschalk Eljakim en zijn secretaris Sebna met de oudere priesters, allen gehuld in rouwgewaden, naar de profeet Jesaja, de zoon van Amoz. 3Zij brachten hem de volgende boodschap van Hizkia: ‘Wij worden vandaag in het nauw gedreven, afgestraft en vernederd. Er heerst een spanning als voor de geboorte van een kind. 4Maar misschien heeft de Here, uw God, de lasterende woorden van de afgezant van de koning van Assur gehoord, toen hij de levende God bespotte. God zal dat niet ongestraft laten. Hij zal hem zeker ter verantwoording roepen. Bid daarom voor ons die zijn overgebleven!’ 5Die boodschap brachten zij aan Jesaja over. 6En Jesaja gaf als antwoord: ‘Vertel koning Hizkia dat de Here zegt: “Laat u niet van de wijs brengen door de woorden van de dienaar van de koning van Assur, noch door zijn godslastering. 7Want de koning zal een bericht uit Assur ontvangen, waaruit blijkt dat zijn aanwezigheid daar dringend gewenst is. Hij zal terugkeren naar zijn eigen land, waar Ik hem zal laten doden.” ’ 8Na het overleg verliet de Assyrische afgezant Jeruzalem om verslag uit te brengen aan zijn koning. Die had Lachis intussen verlaten om Libna te belegeren. 9Op datzelfde moment hoorde de Assyrische koning echter dat koning Tirhaka van Ethiopië op het punt stond hem met een leger (vanuit het zuiden) aan te vallen. Direct daarop stuurde hij boodschappers terug naar Jeruzalem om Hizkia het volgende te vertellen: 10‘Laat die God op wie u vertrouwt, u niet misleiden met de belofte dat de koning van Assur Jeruzalem niet zal innemen! 11Denk maar aan wat overal gebeurde, waar de koningen van Assur kwamen, zij versloegen iedereen die tegen hen opstond. Denkt u dat het u anders zal vergaan? 12Redden hun goden de steden Gozan, Haran, Rezef of de bewoners van Eden in Telassar? Nee, de Assyrische koningen versloegen hen vernietigend! 13En denk aan wat gebeurde met de koning van Hamath, de koning van Arpad en de koningen van de steden Sefarvaïm, Hena en Ivva.’
14Onmiddellijk nadat koning Hizkia deze brief had gelezen, ging hij ermee naar de tempel en spreidde hem uit voor de Here 15en bad met de woorden: 16‘Och Here van de hemelse legers, God van Israël, die troont boven de cherubs, U alleen bent de God van alle koninkrijken op aarde. U alleen maakte de hemel en de aarde. 17Luister als ik smeek, kijk naar mij als ik bid. Kijk naar deze brief van koning Sanherib, want hij heeft de levende God bespot. 18Het is waar, Here, dat de koningen van Assur al deze volken hebben vernietigd, zoals in deze brief staat. 19Zij wierpen hun goden in het vuur, want het waren geen goden, maar slechts beelden die mensen hadden gemaakt van hout en steen. Natuurlijk konden de Assyriërs dergelijke goden vernietigen. 20Maar Here, onze God, red ons toch van zijn macht. Dan zullen alle koninkrijken op aarde weten dat U God bent, U alleen.’
21Toen stuurde Jesaja deze boodschap naar koning Hizkia: ‘De Here, de God van Israël zegt: “Dit is mijn antwoord op uw gebed tegen koning Sanherib van Assur.” 22De Here zegt tegen hem: “Mijn volk, Vrouwe Sion, lacht u uit en bespot u. Achter uw rug schudt zij haar hoofd. 23Weet u wel wie u beledigd en bespot hebt? Tegen wie u uw stem hebt verheven? Tegen wie u uw geweld en uw trots hebt gericht? Tegen de Heilige van Israël! 24U stuurde uw boodschappers om de Here te bespotten. U zei: ‘Ik trok met mijn machtige legers op tegen de volken in het westen. Ik hakte de grootste ceders en mooiste cipressen om. Ik veroverde hun hoogste bergen en vernietigde hun dichtste wouden.’ 25U schept op over de waterputten die u in menig veroverd land liet graven en zelfs Egypte met zijn vele legers is geen obstakel voor u! 26Maar beseft u nu nog niet dat Ik het was die dit lang geleden heb beslist? Dat Ik het was die in vroegere tijden de basis legde voor uw huidige macht? Ik heb dit alles volgens mijn plan laten gebeuren en daarbij hoorde dat u ommuurde steden in puinhopen zou veranderen. 27Daarom boden die mensen zo weinig tegenstand en waren zij zoʼn gemakkelijke prooi voor u. Zij waren kwetsbaar als het gras, als tere bloemen die u onder uw voeten vertrapt, als gras op de daken, geel verbrand door de zon. 28Maar Ik ken u goed, heel uw doen en laten, 29Ik weet hoe u tegen Mij tekeerging. Vanwege uw uitdagende woorden heb Ik een haak in uw neus en een bit in uw mond gelegd waarmee Ik u naar uw eigen land zal laten terugkeren. U zult via dezelfde weg teruggaan als u hier kwam.” ’
30Toen zei God tegen Hizkia: ‘Hier is het bewijs dat Ik deze stad uit de macht van de koning van Assur verlos: nog dit jaar zal hij het beleg opbreken. Dit jaar en het volgende zult u leven van wilde gewassen, maar het derde jaar zult u kunnen zaaien en oogsten. 31Degenen die in Juda zijn overgebleven, zullen weer wortelschieten in de aarde van hun eigen land en daar ook vrucht dragen en zich vermenigvuldigen. 32Want een restant zal Jeruzalem verlaten om het land opnieuw te bevolken, de macht van de Here van de hemelse legers zal zorgen dat dit alles gebeurt. 33En wat de koning van Assur betreft: zijn legers zullen Jeruzalem niet binnenkomen, ze zullen er geen pijlen op afschieten, niet buiten de poorten marcheren en geen wal tegen de muren opwerpen. 34Hij zal naar zijn eigen land terugkeren via de weg waarlangs hij kwam en hij zal geen stap binnen deze stad zetten,’ zegt de Here. 35‘Ik zal deze stad beschermen, haar redden ter wille van mijn naam en die van mijn dienaar David.’
36Die nacht ging de Engel van de Here naar het kamp van de Assyriërs en doodde honderdvijfentachtigduizend soldaten. Toen de overlevenden de volgende morgen wakker werden, zagen zij overal om zich heen lijken liggen. 37Toen keerde koning Sanherib van Assur naar zijn eigen land, naar zijn woonplaats Ninevé terug. 38Op een dag, toen hij bad in de tempel van zijn god Nisroch, doodden zijn zonen Adrammelech en Sarezer hem met hun zwaarden. Zij ontkwamen naar het land Ararat en de zoon van Sanherib, Esarhaddon, volgde hem als koning op.
1And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD. 2And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. 3And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.37.3 blasphemy: or, provocation 4It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.37.4 left: Heb. found 5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6¶ And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.37.7 send…: or, put a spirit into him
8¶ So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. 9And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered? 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? 13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?
14¶ And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. 15And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying, 16O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. 17Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God. 18Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,37.18 nations: Heb. lands 19And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.37.19 cast: Heb. given 20Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
21¶ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria: 22This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee. 23Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel. 24By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.37.24 By thy…: Heb. 37¶ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 38And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.37.38 Armenia: Heb.
