De zondeval
1De slang was listiger dan alle andere dieren die de Here God had gemaakt. Hij zocht de vrouw op en vroeg: ‘God heeft jullie zeker wel verboden van de bomen in de hof te eten, hè?’ 2‘Nee hoor,’ antwoordde de vrouw, ‘wij mogen van alle bomen eten, 3behalve van die in het midden van de hof. Wij mogen hem zelfs niet aanraken, want dan zullen wij sterven.’
4‘Dat is een leugen,’ zei de slang, ‘jullie zullen niet sterven. 5God zegt dat alleen omdat Hij weet dat jullie aan Hem gelijk zullen zijn als je daarvan eet. Je ogen zullen open gaan en net als God zul je het onderscheid kennen tussen goed en kwaad.’
6De vrouw keek naar de boom en zag dat de vrucht eetbaar was en er prachtig uitzag. Die vrucht kon haar verstandig maken! Ze plukte wat vruchten en at ervan. Zij gaf ook haar man, die bij haar was, van de vruchten en hij at er ook van. 7Toen zij dat hadden gedaan, kregen ze door dat ze naakt waren en zij schaamden zich. Van bladeren van een vijgenboom maakten ze schorten en hingen die om hun middel.
8Die avond hoorden zij de Here God door de hof wandelen en zij verborgen zich snel tussen de bomen. 9De Here God riep: ‘Adam, waar ben je?’ 10Adam antwoordde: ‘Ik hoorde U en toen werd ik bang omdat ik naakt ben. Daarom verstopte ik me.’ 11‘Wie heeft je verteld dat je naakt bent?’ vroeg de Here God. ‘Of heb je soms gegeten van de boom waarvoor Ik jullie had gewaarschuwd?’ 12Adam zei: ‘De vrouw die U mij hebt gegeven, heeft mij ervan gegeven en toen heb ik ervan gegeten.’ 13De Here God wendde Zich tot de vrouw en vroeg: ‘Hoe kon je dat nu doen?’ Zij antwoordde: ‘De slang heeft mij bedrogen en misleid.’
14Toen zei de Here God tegen de slang: ‘Ik zal je hiervoor straffen. Je zult vervloekt zijn onder alle dieren op aarde, je hele verdere leven zul je op je buik door het stof kruipen. 15De vrouw en jij, en al jullie nakomelingen, zullen vijanden zijn. Een van haar nakomelingen zal jouw kop verbrijzelen en jij zult zijn hiel verbrijzelen.’
16Na die woorden zei God tegen de vrouw: ‘Met veel pijn en moeite zul je je kinderen krijgen. Je zult verlangen naar je man en hij zal over je heersen!’
17Tegen Adam zei Hij: ‘Omdat je naar je vrouw hebt geluisterd en ondanks mijn waarschuwing toch van de boom hebt gegeten, zal Ik de aardbodem vervloeken. Voortaan zul je hard moeten werken om in leven te blijven. 18Er zullen dorens en distels groeien en van de wilde planten zul je eten. 19Tot de dag van je dood zul je zwetend het land bewerken om te kunnen leven. Dan zal je lichaam vergaan tot het stof van de aarde. Want uit stof ben je gemaakt en tot stof zul je weer worden.’
20En de man noemde zijn vrouw Eva, moeder van alle levenden, omdat uit haar alle mensen zouden worden geboren. 21De Here God maakte van dierenhuid kleding voor Adam en zijn vrouw en trok hun die aan. 22‘Door te eten van de boom van de kennis van goed en kwaad is de mens aan Ons gelijk geworden. Als hij nu van de boom van het leven eet, zal hij ook nog voor altijd leven,’ zei de Here God. 23Daarom stuurde Hij de mens voor altijd uit de hof van Eden weg: hij moest het land gaan bewerken waaruit hij was voortgekomen. 24God verdreef de mens en plaatste aan de oostkant van de hof cherubs en een vlammend zwaard dat flitsend heen en weer schoot, om de toegang tot de boom van het leven te bewaken.

9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. 16Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.3.16 to thy…: or, subject to thy husband
17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;3.18 bring…: Heb. cause to bud 19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. 20And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.3.20 Eve: Heb. Chavah: that is Living 21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22¶ And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
