De terugkeer van Ezra naar Jeruzalem
1Hier volgen, met vermelding van hun afkomst, de namen van de familiehoofden die met mij van Babel naar Jeruzalem gingen tijdens de regering van koning Arthahsasta:
2-14Van de familie Pinechas: Gersom; van de familie Itamar: Daniël; van de familie David: Hattus, de zoon van Sechanja; van de familie Paros: Zacharja en 150 andere mannen; van de familie Pahath-Moab: Eljehoënai, de zoon van Zerahja, en 200 andere mannen; van de familie Zattu: Sechanja, de zoon van Jahaziël, en 300 andere mannen; van de familie Adin: Ebed, de zoon van Jonathan, en vijftig andere mannen; van de familie Elam: Jesaja, de zoon van Athalja, en zeventig andere mannen; van de familie Sefatja: Zebadja, de zoon van Michaël, en tachtig andere mannen; van de familie Joab: Obadja, de zoon van Jehiël, en 218 andere mannen; van de familie Bani: Selomit, de zoon van Josifja, en 160 andere mannen; van de familie Bebai: Zacharja, de zoon van Bebai, en 28 andere mannen; van de familie Azgad: Johanan, de zoon van Hakkatan, en 110 andere mannen; de laatsten van de familie Adonikam: Elifelet, Jehiël, Semaja en zestig andere mannen; van de familie Bigvai: Uthai, Zabbud en zeventig andere mannen.
15Wij verzamelden ons bij de rivier de Ahava. Daar sloegen wij ook ons kamp op. Bij nader onderzoek bleken er geen Levieten onder het volk en de priesters te zijn! 16Daarom ontbood ik de familiehoofden Eliëzer, Ariël, Semaja, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zacharja en Mesullam, en ook Jojarib en Elnathan, twee wijze mannen. 17Ik zond hen naar Iddo, de leider in de plaats Kasifja. Zij moesten hem en zijn broers en de tempelknechten vragen of zij ons priesters voor de tempel van onze God wilden sturen. 18En de gunst van God was met ons! Hij stuurde een verstandig man, Serebja, met zijn achttien zonen en broers. Serebja was een nakomeling van Machli, de zoon van Levi en kleinzoon van Israël. 19Verder kwamen Hasabja en Jesaja, de zoon van Merari, met zijn twintig broers en zonen en tweehonderdtwintig tempelknechten. 20Tempelknechten zijn helpers van de Levieten, die al door koning David voor deze taak zijn aangesteld. De namen van deze tweehonderdtwintig personen werden genoteerd. 21Om ons onze nederige positie tegenover God te laten beseffen, riep ik bij de rivier de Ahava een vasten uit. Wij baden tot God dat Hij ons een goede reis zou geven en ons, onze kinderen en onze bezittingen onderweg zou beschermen. 22Ik had mij ervoor geschaamd de koning te vragen om soldaten en ruiters die ons op deze tocht konden beschermen tegen vijanden. Wij hadden namelijk tegen de koning gezegd dat onze God alle mensen die Hem aanbidden, beschermt en dat alleen zij die Hem verlaten, door rampen worden getroffen. 23Daarom vastten wij en baden om Gods bescherming. En Hij verhoorde ons gebed. 24Ik stelde twaalf leiders van de priesters aan: Serebja, Hasabja en tien andere priesters. 25Zij waren verantwoordelijk voor het vervoer van het zilver, goud en de voorwerpen die de koning, zijn adviseurs, zijn vorsten en de Israëlieten hadden geschonken voor Gods tempel. 26-27 Ik woog alles voordat ik het hun gaf. Er was drieëntwintigduizend vierhonderd kilo zilver, zesendertighonderd kilo aan zilveren voorwerpen, zesendertighonderd kilo goud, twintig gouden bekers ter waarde van duizenden goudstukken en twee prachtige bronzen voorwerpen, zo kostbaar alsof ze van goud waren. 28Ik zei tegen deze twaalf mannen: ‘Zoals u aan de Here bent gewijd, zo wijd ik ook deze voorwerpen en het zilver en goud als een vrijwillige gave aan de Here, de God van uw voorouders. 29Bewaak deze schatten goed! Laat er niets ontbreken wanneer u ze in Jeruzalem overhandigt aan de leidende priesters, de Levieten en de leiders van Israël. Zij zullen ze neerzetten in de tempel.’ 30Toen namen de priesters en de Levieten het zilver, het goud en de voorwerpen in ontvangst om ze naar Gods tempel in Jeruzalem te brengen. 31Op de twaalfde dag van de eerste maand braken wij ons kamp aan de rivier de Ahava op en vertrokken naar Jeruzalem. God was met ons: Hij beschermde ons onderweg tegen vijanden en bandieten. 32Zo kwamen wij veilig in Jeruzalem aan en namen drie dagen rust.
33Op de vierde dag na aankomst werden het zilver, het goud en de voorwerpen in de tempel gewogen. Dit gebeurde onder toezicht van priester Meremoth, de zoon van Uria. Hij werd geassisteerd door Eleazar, de zoon van Pinechas, Jozabad, de zoon van Jesua, en Noadja, de zoon van Binnuï. Zij waren allemaal Levieten. 34Zij telden en wogen alles en noteerden elk gewicht. 35Toen brachten de teruggekeerde ballingen brandoffers aan de God van Israël, zesennegentig rammen, zevenenzeventig lammeren en ten slotte twaalf bokken als zondoffer. 36De brieven met de bevelen van de koning werden overhandigd aan zijn commissarissen en gouverneurs in het gebied ten westen van de Eufraat. Zij gaven allemaal hun steun aan de herbouw van Gods tempel.

The return to Jerusalem
15I assembled them at the canal that flows towards Ahava, and we camped there three days. When I checked among the people and the priests, I found no Levites there. 16So I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of learning, 17and I ordered them to go to Iddo, the leader in Kasiphia. I told them what to say to Iddo and his fellow Levites, the temple servants in Kasiphia, so that they might bring attendants to us for the house of our God. 18Because the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah, a capable man, from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah’s sons and brothers, 18 in all; 19and Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and his brothers and nephews, 20 men in all. 20They also brought 220 of the temple servants – a body that David and the officials had established to assist the Levites. All were registered by name.
21There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, ‘The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.’ 23So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.
24Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, namely, Sherebiah, Hashabiah and ten of their brothers, 25and I weighed out to them the offering of silver and gold and the articles that the king, his advisors, his officials and all Israel present there had donated for the house of our God. 26I weighed out to them 650 talents8:26 That is, about 22 metric tons of silver, silver articles weighing 100 talents,8:26 That is, about 3.4 metric tons 100 talents8:26 That is, about 3.4 metric tons of gold, 2720 bowls of gold valued at 1,000 darics,8:27 That is, about 8.4 kilograms and two fine articles of polished bronze, as precious as gold.
28I said to them, ‘You as well as these articles are consecrated to the Lord. The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the Lord, the God of your ancestors. 29Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem before the leading priests and the Levites and the family heads of Israel.’ 30Then the priests and Levites received the silver and gold and sacred articles that had been weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem.
31On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way. 32So we arrived in Jerusalem, where we rested three days.
33On the fourth day, in the house of our God, we weighed out the silver and gold and the sacred articles into the hands of Meremoth son of Uriah, the priest. Eleazar son of Phinehas was with him, and so were the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui. 34Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the entire weight was recorded at that time.
35Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven male lambs and, as a sin offering,8:35 Or purification offering twelve male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the Lord. 36They also delivered the king’s orders to the royal satraps and to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, who then gave assistance to the people and to the house of God.
