Het verzet tegen de Israëlieten
1De plaatselijke bevolking, die vijandig stond tegenover de stammen van Juda en Benjamin, hoorde van de terugkeer van de Israëlieten uit hun ballingschap en van de herbouw van de tempel van de Here, de God van Israël. 2Daarom benaderden zij Zerubbabel en de andere leiders. ‘Laat ons helpen,’ stelden zij voor, ‘want wij aanbidden uw God ook. Wij hebben aan Hem geofferd sinds koning Esarhaddon van Assyrië ons hier heeft gebracht.’ 3‘Nee,’ antwoordden Zerubbabel, Jesua en de andere leiders. ‘U kunt hieraan niet meedoen. De tempel van de Here, de God van Israël, mag alleen door Israëlieten worden gebouwd. Zo heeft koning Kores van Perzië het bepaald.’ 4-5 Toen probeerde de plaatselijke bevolking de Israëlieten te ontmoedigen en bang te maken door mensen te sturen die leugens over hen aan koning Kores vertelden met de bedoeling de bouw te verhinderen. Dit ging zo door tijdens Koresʼ regering en duurde tot de eerste regeringsjaren van koning Darius.
6Daarna, aan het begin van de regering van koning Ahasveros, diende de plaatselijke bevolking een schriftelijke aanklacht in tegen de Israëlieten in Juda en Jeruzalem. 7Zij deden hetzelfde tijdens de regering van Arthahsasta. Bislam, Mithredath, Tabeël en hun collegaʼs stuurden Arthahsasta de volgende brief. Hij was opgesteld in het Aramees en er was een vertaling bij. 8Gouverneur Rehum en zijn secretaris Simsai schreven Arthahsasta het volgende over de herbouw van Jeruzalem.
9‘Van: gouverneur Rehum, secretaris Simsai, onze collegaʼs, de rechters, andere ambtenaren uit het gebied ten westen van de rivier de Eufraat, de Perzen, de Babyloniërs, de burgers van Uruk en Susan in Elam 10en andere volken die door de grote en hooggeëerde Asnappar zijn weggevoerd uit eigen land en naar Jeruzalem, Samaria en de andere gebieden ten westen van de Eufraat werden gebracht.
11Aan: koning Arthahsasta.
12Majesteit, zoals u weet zijn de Judeeërs uit Babel naar Jeruzalem teruggekeerd. Op dit moment zijn zij bezig met de herbouw van deze vanouds oproerige en opstandige stad. De stadsmuren naderen hun voltooiing en de fundamenten van de tempel zijn gelegd. 13Wij willen graag dat u weet dat wanneer deze stad is herbouwd en de muren zijn voltooid, de Judeeërs zullen weigeren u belasting of tol te betalen. Dit zou zeer in uw nadeel zijn. 14Aangezien wij bij u in dienst zijn en niet graag zien dat u wordt beledigd of benadeeld, schrijven wij u. 15Wij stellen u voor dat u de oude archieven er eens op naslaat. Dan zult u ontdekken dat deze stad sinds mensenheugenis bekend staat om haar opstandigheid. U zult lezen dat zij verschillende koningen en gebieden schade heeft toegebracht, dat is ook de reden, waarom zij destijds werd verwoest. 16Wij vrezen dat, wanneer deze stad is herbouwd en de muren zijn voltooid, u het hele gebied ten westen van de Eufraat zult verliezen.’
17De koning reageerde hierop met de volgende brief: ‘Aan: gouverneur Rehum, secretaris Simsai en hun overige collegaʼs die in Samaria en het gebied ten westen van de Eufraat wonen.
18Mijne heren, de brief die u mij hebt gezonden, is mij duidelijk voorgelezen. 19Ik heb bevolen een onderzoek in te stellen naar het verleden van Jeruzalem. Uit de archieven is inderdaad gebleken dat deze stad vanouds in opstand kwam tegen haar koningen en een broeinest was van oproer en verzet. 20Ik ontdekte bovendien dat daar machtige koningen hebben geregeerd. Zij heersten over het hele gebied ten westen van de Eufraat. En zij ontvingen allerlei vormen van belasting en tol. 21Daarom beveel ik dat die mensen hun arbeid aan de herbouw van Jeruzalem tot nader order moeten staken. 22Laat deze zaak vooral niet op zijn beloop, anders gaat het rijk veel schade lijden.’ 23Een afschrift van deze brief van koning Arthahsasta werd voorgelezen aan Rehum, zijn secretaris Simsai en hun collegaʼs. Zij haastten zich onmiddellijk naar Jeruzalem en dwongen de Judeeërs met geweld de bouw te staken. 24Het werk aan de tempel in Jeruzalem bleef stilliggen tot het tweede regeringsjaar van koning Darius van Perzië.

23¶ Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.4.23 by force…: Chaldee, by arm and power 24Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
