Gods toorn over Israël
1Opnieuw kreeg ik een boodschap van de Here: 2‘Zeg tegen Israël: “In welke richting Ik ook kijk—oost, west, noord of zuid—het einde is gekomen voor uw land. 3Het is zo ver! Ik laat mijn toorn op u los. Ik zal oordelen over uw gedrag en u zult boeten voor al uw goddeloze praktijken. 4Ik zal u niet ontzien en geen medelijden tonen. Ik zal u al uw zonden betaald zetten en u zult erachter komen dat Ik de Here ben.
5-6 De Oppermachtige Here zegt: met de ene ramp na de andere zal Ik u naar de afgrond drijven. Het einde nadert, uw lot, uw verwerping, ligt vast. 7Och Israël, de dag van uw veroordeling breekt aan, de tijd is gekomen en uw ongeluksdag nadert. Het is een dag van eindeloze paniek, zonder een enkele vreugdekreet!
8-9 Binnenkort zal Ik mijn toorn over u uitstorten en u straffen voor al uw goddeloze daden. Ik zal u niet sparen noch medelijden met u hebben en u zult te weten komen dat de Here u dit aandoet.
10-11 De oordeelsdag is gekomen, het ongeluk komt over u, want uw goddeloosheid en trots hebben hun toppunt bereikt. Het geweld is opgebloeid tot een stok om daarmee de goddeloosheid te straffen, geen van deze rijke en goddeloze, arrogante mannen zal in leven blijven. Uw welvaart zal verdwijnen en er zal niets van waarde overblijven. 12Ja, de tijd is gekomen, de dag is aangebroken. Er zal niets zijn om te kopen of te verkopen, want de toorn van God rust op het hele land dat tegen Hem in opstand is gekomen. 13De verkoper zal niet kunnen terugkopen wat hij ooit heeft verkocht, ook al wil hij dat nog zo graag, want God heeft Zich uitgesproken tegen het hele volk Israël, allen zullen worden vernietigd. Geen van hen die in zonde leven, zal overblijven. 14De trompetten roepen naar Israëls leger: ‘Maak u klaar voor de strijd!’ Maar niemand zal zich klaarmaken, want mijn toorn rust op het hele volk. 15Als u zich buiten de muren begeeft, staat de vijand daar klaar om u te doden. Als u binnen blijft, zullen honger en ziekten u verteren. 16Ieder die ontsnapt, zal eenzaam zijn als de kirrende duiven op de bergen, kreunend om de misdaden die hij heeft begaan. 17Alle handen zullen verslappen en de knieën zullen versmelten tot water. 18U zult rouwkleding dragen, afschuw en schaamte zullen u bedekken, u zult uw hoofden kaalscheren als teken van rouw. 19U zult uw geld weggooien, het als afval beschouwen, want op die dag van toorn zal het geen enkele waarde hebben. Het zal u geen bevrediging noch voldoening geven, want uw geldzucht was de aanleiding tot uw zonde. 20U heeft uw schatten omgesmolten tot afgodsbeelden waar u zo over opschept. Daarom zal Ik het in vuilnis veranderen zodat u het zult verafschuwen. 21Ik zal uw afgodsbeelden als buit aan buitenlanders en goddeloze volken geven. Zij zullen die afgoden die u hebt gediend, ontwijden. 22Ik zal niet kijken als zij dat doen en Ik zal hun ook geen halt toeroepen. Als rovers zullen zij zelfs het Heilige, mijn tempel, binnendringen en ontheiligen.
23Maak ketens klaar voor mijn volk, want overal in het land worden bloedbaden aangericht. Jeruzalem is vol geweld. 24Ik zal uw trots vernietigen door de wreedste volken naar Jeruzalem te sturen om uw huizen in bezit te nemen, de hoogmoed van de machthebbers te vernederen en hun heiligdommen te ontheiligen. 25Want de tijd is gekomen dat angst en paniek zullen heersen en dat u rust en vrede zult zoeken, maar die zal er dan niet zijn. 26-27 Ramp na ramp zal u treffen, het ene ongeluk na het andere. Men zal tevergeefs uitzien naar de openbaring van een profeet, tevergeefs wachten op het onderwijs van een priester, tevergeefs hopen op advies van de leiders. De koning en zijn adviseurs zullen door wanhoop zijn verlamd. De mensen zullen radeloos zijn van angst, want Ik zal hen net zo slecht behandelen als zij anderen hebben behandeld. Zij ontvangen hun verdiende loon. Dan zullen zij moeten toegeven dat Ik de Here ben.” ’
The end has come
1The word of the Lord came to me: 2‘Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says to the land of Israel:
‘ “The end! The end has come
upon the four corners of the land!
3The end is now upon you,
and I will unleash my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct
and repay you for all your detestable practices.
4I will not look on you with pity;
I will not spare you.
I will surely repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.
‘ “Then you will know that I am the Lord.”
5‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
‘ “Disaster! Unheard-of7:5 Most Hebrew manuscripts; some Hebrew manuscripts and Syriac Disaster after disaster!
See, it comes!
6The end has come!
The end has come!
It has roused itself against you.
See, it comes!
7Doom has come upon you,
upon you who dwell in the land.
The time has come! The day is near!
There is panic, not joy, on the mountains.
8I am about to pour out my wrath on you
and spend my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct
and repay you for all your detestable practices.
9I will not look on you with pity;
I will not spare you.
I will repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.
‘ “Then you will know that it is I the Lord who strikes you.
10‘ “See, the day!
See, it comes!
Doom has burst forth,
the rod has budded,
arrogance has blossomed!
11Violence has arisen,7:11 Or The violent one has become
a rod to punish the wicked.
None of the people will be left,
none of that crowd –
none of their wealth,
nothing of value.
12The time has come!
The day has arrived!
Let not the buyer rejoice
nor the seller grieve,
for my wrath is on the whole crowd.
13The seller will not recover
the property that was sold –
as long as both buyer and seller live.
For the vision concerning the whole crowd
will not be reversed.
Because of their sins, not one of them
will preserve their life.
14‘ “They have blown the trumpet,
they have made all things ready,
but no-one will go into battle,
for my wrath is on the whole crowd.
15Outside is the sword;
inside are plague and famine.
Those in the country
will die by the sword;
those in the city
will be devoured by famine and plague.
16The fugitives who escape
will flee to the mountains.
Like doves of the valleys,
they will all moan,
each for their own sins.
17Every hand will go limp;
every leg will be wet with urine.
18They will put on sackcloth
and be clothed with terror.
Every face will be covered with shame,
and every head will be shaved.
19‘ “They will throw their silver into the streets,
and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean.
Their silver and gold
will not be able to deliver them
in the day of the Lord’s wrath.
It will not satisfy their hunger
or fill their stomachs,
for it has caused them to stumble into sin.
20They took pride in their beautiful jewellery
and used it to make their detestable idols.
They made it into vile images;
therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them.
21I will give their wealth as plunder to foreigners
and as loot to the wicked of the earth,
who will defile it.
22I will turn my face away from the people,
and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure.
They will enter it
and will defile it.
23‘ “Prepare chains!
For the land is full of bloodshed,
and the city is full of violence.
24I will bring the most wicked of nations
to take possession of their houses.
I will put an end to the pride of the mighty,
and their sanctuaries will be desecrated.
25When terror comes,
they will seek peace in vain.
26Calamity upon calamity will come,
and rumour upon rumour.
They will go searching for a vision from the prophet,
priestly instruction in the law will cease,
the counsel of the elders will come to an end.
27The king will mourn,
the prince will be clothed with despair,
and the hands of the people of the land will tremble.
I will deal with them according to their conduct,
and by their own standards I will judge them.
‘ “Then they will know that I am the Lord.” ’
