De zonden van Jeruzalem
1Opnieuw kreeg ik een boodschap van de Here: 2‘Mensenzoon,’ zei Hij, ‘confronteer Jeruzalem met haar afschuwelijke zonden. 3Vertel haar dat de Oppermachtige Here zegt: u bent vast nakomelingen van de Kanaänieten. Uw vader moet een Amoriet zijn geweest en uw moeder een Hethitische. 4Toen u geboren was, bekommerde niemand zich om u. Toen Ik u voor het eerst zag, was uw navelstreng nog niet afgebonden, u was nog niet gewassen, niemand had u ingewreven met zout of aangekleed. 5Niemand had enige interesse in u, niemand toonde medelijden of maakte zich zorgen. Op de dag dat u werd geboren, liet men u in het veld achter om te sterven, als een ongewenst kind.
6-7 Maar Ik kwam langs en zag u daar liggen, besmeurd met uw eigen bloed en Ik zei: “Leef! Groei op als een plant op het veld!” En dat deed u. U groeide op tot een lange, mooie en soepele plant, een juweel tussen de anderen. Toen u ouder werd, waren uw borsten volgroeid en uw haar was mooi en lang! Toch was u nog naakt. 8Later, toen Ik weer voorbijkwam en u terugzag, was u oud genoeg om te trouwen. Ik sloeg mijn mantel om u heen, waardoor Ik mijn wettige huwelijkseed aflegde,’ zegt de Oppermachtige Here. ‘Ik sloot een verbond met u en zo werd u van Mij. 9-10 Van uw onreinheid heb Ik u gereinigd en u met olie gezalfd. Het bloed heb Ik van u afgewassen. Nadat het huwelijk was voltrokken, gaf Ik u prachtige linnen en zijden kleding, rijk bewerkte gewaden en sandalen van het duurste leer. 11Ik gaf u prachtige sieraden, armbanden en kettingen, 12een ring voor uw neus en twee ringen voor uw oren en een prachtige kroon. 13Zo werd u mooi gemaakt met goud en zilver en uw kleren waren van linnen en zijde, prachtig bewerkt. U at het beste voedsel en werd mooier dan ooit tevoren, zo mooi als een koningin. 14Alle volken wisten hoe mooi u was! Het was een volmaakte schoonheid, dankzij alle sieraden die Ik u gaf,’ zegt de Oppermachtige Here.
15‘Maar u dacht dat u ook wel zonder Mij verder kon en vertrouwde helemaal op uw eigen schoonheid. U gaf uw lichaam als een prostituee aan iedere man die voorbijkwam. Hij hoefde maar te vragen en hij kreeg uw schoonheid. 16U gebruikte de prachtige dingen die Ik u had gegeven om er afgoderij mee te bedrijven en dus ook prostitutie. Ongelooflijk! Zoiets is nog nooit eerder gebeurd! 17U nam de juwelen en de gouden en zilveren sieraden die Ik u had gegeven en maakte er mannelijke afgodsbeelden van, waarmee u prostitutie bedreef. 18U gebruikte de prachtig bewerkte kleding die Ik u gaf, om uw afgodsbeelden mee aan te kleden! Met mijn olie en reukwerk vereerde u hen! 19Voor hen—denk het u eens in—zette u het fijne meel, de olie en de honing neer die Ik u gaf. U gebruikte het als een heerlijk offer aan hen! 20De zonen en dochters die u voor Mij ter wereld had gebracht, offerde u als voedsel aan uw goden. Zij zijn er niet meer. Was het al niet erg genoeg dat u een prostituee was? 21Moest u mijn kinderen ook nog ombrengen in het vuur van heidense altaren? 22En in al die jaren van overspel en zonde hebt u geen moment aan de dagen van vroeger gedacht, toen u naakt was en met bloed besmeurd. 23En toen, naast al uw andere goddeloosheid—wee u,’ zegt de Oppermachtige Here— 24‘bouwde u voor uzelf een heidens altaar en offerplaatsen in elke straat. 25Daar maakte u uw schoonheid te schande door uzelf schaamteloos aan iedere man aan te bieden. Onafgebroken bedreef u prostitutie. 26En ook met Egypte, uw wellustige buren, bedreef u prostitutie. En u deed dat om Mij te kwetsen. 27Daarom heb Ik u geslagen met mijn vuist! Ik heb uw gebied verkleind en u overgeleverd aan uw vijanden, de Filistijnse vrouwen, en zelfs zij schamen zich voor u. 28Ook met de Assyriërs hebt u overspel gepleegd door hen tot bondgenoot te maken en hun goden te vereren. Het leek wel alsof u niet genoeg kreeg van steeds weer nieuwe goden. Na uw overspel daar was u nog steeds niet tevreden. 29Daarom begon u ook nog de goden van het grote handelsland Babel te aanbidden. En nóg was u niet tevreden. 30Wat een slappeling bent u,’ zegt de Oppermachtige Here, ‘dat u zulke dingen doet, u bent een onverbeterlijke hoer 31die in elke straat afgodsaltaren en offerplaatsen bouwt. Ja, u bent zelfs erger dan een hoer, want u bent zo belust op zonde dat u zelfs geen geld vraagt voor uw liefde! 32Ja, u bent een overspelige echtgenote die met andere mannen leeft in plaats van met haar eigen echtgenoot. 33-34 Prostituees vragen geld voor hun diensten, mannen betalen hen met vele geschenken. Maar u niet, u gaf hun geschenken om hen naar u toe te lokken! Daarin verschilt u van andere prostituees, u betaalde zelf, de omgekeerde wereld!
35O bandeloze hoer, luister naar het woord van de Here.’ 36De Oppermachtige Here zegt: ‘Omdat Ik uw smerige zonden zie, uw overspel met uw minnaars—uw verering van afgoden—en het vermoorden van uw kinderen als offers aan uw goden, 37zal Ik het volgende gaan doen: Ik zal al uw bondgenoten verzamelen—deze minnaars met wie u hebt gezondigd, zowel zij van wie u hield en zij die u haatte—en Ik zal u naakt tentoonstellen voor hen, door u de kleren van het lijf te scheuren waar zij bij zijn. 38Ik zal u straffen zoals een overspelige vrouw en een moordenares wordt gestraft. U zult boeten voor het bloed dat u hebt doen vloeien en Ik zal u laten kennismaken met mijn jaloerse toorn. 39Ik zal u overgeven aan uw minnaars om u te laten vernietigen. Zij zullen uw offerplaatsen en afgodsaltaren afbreken, u beroven van uw prachtige juwelen en u naakt en beschaamd achterlaten. 40Zij zullen zich verzamelen en met een bende tegen u optrekken om u te stenigen en met het zwaard in stukken te hakken. 41Zij zullen uw huizen verbranden en u straffen voor de ogen van vele vrouwen. Ik zal erop toezien dat u stopt met uw overspel en uw minnaars niet langer betaalt voor hun liefde. 42Wanneer dat allemaal achter de rug is, zal mijn toorn tegen u bedaren, mijn jaloezie tegen u zal wegebben en Ik zal kalm worden. Ik zal niet langer toornig op u zijn. 43Maar eerst zal Ik al uw zonden met u verrekenen, omdat u zich uw jeugd niet hebt herinnerd en Mij toornig hebt gemaakt door al die gruwelijke dingen die u doet,’ zegt de Here. ‘Dan zult u niet langer deze schandelijke dingen doen.
44“Zo moeder, zo dochter” zal iedereen van u zeggen. 45Want ook uw moeder had een afkeer van haar man en kinderen en u hebt hetzelfde. Net als uw zusters hebt u een afkeer van man en kinderen. Inderdaad, uw moeder moet wel een Hethitische en uw vader wel een Amoriet zijn geweest! 46Uw oudere zuster is Samaria en zij leefde met haar dochters ten noorden van u. Uw jongere zuster is Sodom, zij leefde met haar dochters ten zuiden van u. 47U hebt niet alleen gezondigd zoals zij, nee, dat was nog niets, in korte tijd streefde u hen ver voorbij. 48Zo waar Ik leef,’ zegt de Oppermachtige Here: ‘Sodom en haar dochters zijn nooit zo verdorven geweest als u en uw dochters. 49De zonden van uw zuster Sodom waren arrogantie, vraatzucht en onverschilligheid, terwijl buiten haar deur de armen en behoeftigen gebrek leden zonder dat zij hen hielp. 50Terwijl Ik toekeek, deed zij afschuwelijke dingen. Daarom heb Ik haar weggevaagd, zoals u weet. 51Zelfs Samaria heeft niet half zoveel zonden bedreven als u. U hebt nog veel meer goddeloosheid bedreven dan uw zusters, zij zijn rechtvaardig vergeleken met u! 52Wees dan niet verbaasd als zij een lichtere straf krijgen. Want uw zonden zijn zo gruwelijk dat in vergelijking met u uw zusters onschuldig lijken. U verdient daarom de schande die nu over u komt.
53Maar op een dag zal Ik een ommekeer brengen in het lot van Sodom en Samaria en hun dochters en ook in dat van Juda. 54Uw vreselijke straf zal een troost voor hen zijn, want hij zal groter zijn dan die van hen. 55Ja, uw zusters Sodom en Samaria en al hun inwoners zullen weer tot bloei komen en ook Juda zal in die tijd opnieuw welvaart kennen. 56In uw trotse tijd weigerde u zelfs maar de naam van Sodom uit te spreken. 57Maar nu is uw grotere goddeloosheid aan de hele wereld getoond en bent ú degene op wie men neerkijkt, Edom en al haar buurstaten en alle Filistijnen. 58U zult dan de gevolgen van uw schandelijke en gruwelijke daden dragen,’ zegt de Here God. 59-60 Want de Oppermachtige Here zegt: ‘Ik zal u laten boeten voor het verbreken van het verbond. Mijn plechtige eed liet u volledig koud. Toch zal Ik de belofte houden die Ik u in uw jeugd gaf. Ik zal een eeuwig verbond met u sluiten. 61U zult met schaamte terugdenken aan al het kwaad dat u hebt gedaan wanneer Ik u uw zusters Samaria en Sodom als dochters geef. U zult zich ervan bewust zijn dat u dit edelmoedige gebaar niet hebt verdiend, want u hebt zich niet aan mijn verbond gehouden. 62Ik zal dus mijn verbond met u opnieuw bekrachtigen en u zult weten dat Ik de Here ben. 63Alles wat u hebt gedaan, zal Ik u weer in herinnering brengen. U zult de hand voor uw mond houden en zwijgen uit schaamte, wanneer Ik u alles zal vergeven wat u hebt misdaan,’ zegt de Oppermachtige Here.

6¶ And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live.16.6 polluted: or, trodden under foot 7I have caused thee to multiply as the bud of the field, and thou hast increased and waxen great, and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare.16.7 caused…: Heb. made thee a million16.7 excellent…: Heb. ornament of ornaments 8Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine. 9Then washed I thee with water; yea, I throughly washed away thy blood from thee, and I anointed thee with oil.16.9 blood: Heb. bloods 10I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers’ skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk. 11I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck. 12And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head.16.12 forehead: Heb. nose 13Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper into a kingdom. 14And thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord GOD.
15¶ But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was. 16And of thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so. 17Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them,16.17 of men: Heb. of a male 18And tookest thy broidered garments, and coveredst them: and thou hast set mine oil and mine incense before them. 19My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey, wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith the Lord GOD.16.19 a sweet…: Heb. a savour of rest 20Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,16.20 to be…: Heb. to devour 21That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them? 22And in all thine abominations and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and bare, and wast polluted in thy blood. 23And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, (woe, woe unto thee! saith the Lord GOD;) 24That thou hast also built unto thee an eminent place, and hast made thee an high place in every street.16.24 eminent…: or, brothel house 25Thou hast built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied thy whoredoms. 26Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger. 27Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee, and have diminished thine ordinary food, and delivered thee unto the will of them that hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are ashamed of thy lewd way.16.27 daughters: or, cities 28Thou hast played the whore also with the Assyrians, because thou wast unsatiable; yea, thou hast played the harlot with them, and yet couldest not be satisfied. 29Thou hast moreover multiplied thy fornication in the land of Canaan unto Chaldea; and yet thou wast not satisfied herewith. 30How weak is thine heart, saith the Lord GOD, seeing thou doest all these things, the work of an imperious whorish woman; 31In that thou buildest thine eminent place in the head of every way, and makest thine high place in every street; and hast not been as an harlot, in that thou scornest hire;16.31 In that thou buildest…: or, In thy daughters is thine, etc 32But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband! 33They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side for thy whoredom.16.33 hirest: Heb. bribest 34And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore thou art contrary.
35¶ Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD: 36Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children, which thou didst give unto them; 37Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness. 38And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy.16.38 as: Heb. with judgments of 39And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare.16.39 thy fair…: Heb. instruments of thine ornament 40They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords. 41And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more. 42So will I make my fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more angry. 43Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, but hast fretted me in all these things; behold, therefore I also will recompense thy way upon thine head, saith the Lord GOD: and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine abominations.
44¶ Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter. 45Thou art thy mother’s daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which lothed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite. 46And thine elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.16.46 thy younger: Heb. lesser than thou 47Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.16.47 as if…: or, that was lothed as a small thing 48As I live, saith the Lord GOD, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. 49Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good. 51Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done. 52Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters. 53When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them: 54That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them. 55When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate. 56For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride,16.56 mentioned: Heb. for a report, or, hearing16.56 pride: Heb. prides, or, excellencies 57Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria, and all that are round about her, the daughters of the Philistines, which despise thee round about.16.57 Syria: Heb. 60¶ Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant. 61Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant. 62And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: 63That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord GOD.
