Haman door Esther ontmaskerd
1De koning en Haman zaten aan bij het diner bij Esther. 2Nadat de wijn was ingeschonken, vroeg de koning opnieuw: ‘Welk verzoek heb je, koningin Esther? Wat wil je? Ja, wat het ook is, ik zal het je geven, zelfs al was het mijn halve koninkrijk!’ 3Eindelijk kwam de koningin met haar vraag voor de dag: ‘Als u mij een gunst wilt bewijzen, koning, en als het uwe majesteit behaagt, red dan mijn leven en dat van mijn volk! 4Want mijn volk en ik zijn verkocht om uitgeroeid te worden. Als wij als slaven verkocht waren, dan had ik misschien gezwegen, want dat zou uw belangen niet geschaad hebben.’ 5‘Waar heb je het over?’ vroeg de koning verbaasd. ‘Wie durft het in zijn hoofd te halen jou iets aan te doen?’ 6‘Daar zit de schurk,’ antwoordde Esther, ‘Haman is de vijand die ons bedreigt!’ Haman werd bleek van angst toen hij hun gezichten zag. 7Woedend sprong de koning van tafel op en liep de tuin in. Haman bleef achter om de koningin te smeken zijn leven te redden, want hij wist dat hij ten dode opgeschreven was. 8Hij viel neer op het rustbed waarop koningin Esther lag, juist op het moment waarop de koning uit de paleistuin terugkwam. ‘Wat?’ bulderde de koning. ‘Durf je ook nog de koningin in mijn paleis, onder mijn ogen aan te randen?’ Nadat de koning de beschuldiging had uitgesproken, bedekte men Hamans gezicht.
9Harbona, een van de hofleden, zei: ‘Majesteit, Haman heeft juist een twintig meter hoge galg laten bouwen. Daaraan wilde hij Mordechai ophangen, de man die uw leven heeft gered! De galg staat bij Hamans huis.’ 10‘Hang Haman daaraan op,’ beval de koning. Zo vond Haman de dood aan de galg die hij voor Mordechai had gebouwd. Toen nam de woede van de koning af.
Haman Impaled
1So the king and Haman went to Queen Esther’s banquet, 2and as they were drinking wine on the second day, the king again asked, “Queen Esther, what is your petition? It will be given you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be granted.”
3Then Queen Esther answered, “If I have found favor with you, Your Majesty, and if it pleases you, grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request. 4For I and my people have been sold to be destroyed, killed and annihilated. If we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have kept quiet, because no such distress would justify disturbing the king.7:4 Or quiet, but the compensation our adversary offers cannot be compared with the loss the king would suffer”
5King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, “Who is he? Where is he—the man who has dared to do such a thing?”
6Esther said, “An adversary and enemy! This vile Haman!”
Then Haman was terrified before the king and queen. 7The king got up in a rage, left his wine and went out into the palace garden. But Haman, realizing that the king had already decided his fate, stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his life.
8Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the banquet hall, Haman was falling on the couch where Esther was reclining.
The king exclaimed, “Will he even molest the queen while she is with me in the house?”
As soon as the word left the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face. 9Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said, “A pole reaching to a height of fifty cubits7:9 That is, about 75 feet or about 23 meters stands by Haman’s house. He had it set up for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king.”
The king said, “Impale him on it!” 10So they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. Then the king’s fury subsided.
