Waarschuwing tegen heidense godsdiensten
1‘Denk eraan dat de priesters en de andere leden van de stam Levi geen grondgebied krijgen zoals de andere stammen. Daarom moeten zij leven van de offers die het volk naar het altaar van de Here brengt. 2Zij hebben geen erfelijk bezit nodig, want de Here is hun erfdeel! Dat heeft Hij hun beloofd. 3De schouder, de wangen en de maag van elk rund en elk schaap, dat als offer wordt gebracht, moeten aan de priesters worden gegeven. 4Bovendien ontvangen de priesters hun aandeel van de oogst die u de Here als dankoffer brengt, het eerste koren, de nieuwe wijn, de olijfolie en de eerste wol van het schaapscheren. 5Want de Here, uw God, heeft de stam Levi uit alle stammen gekozen om de Here van generatie op generatie te dienen. 6-7 Iedere Leviet, waar hij ook leeft in Israël, heeft het recht naar het heiligdom te gaan op de tijd die hij zelf kiest en daar te dienen in de naam van de Here, net als zijn broeders, de Levieten, die daar geregeld hun werk doen. 8Zijn deel van de offers zal hem als een recht worden gegeven, niet alleen als hij het nodig heeft.
9Wanneer u in het beloofde land aankomt, moet u ervoor oppassen dat u niets overneemt van de vreselijke gewoonten van de volken die daar nu leven. 10Laat niemand van u zijn kind aanbieden als brandoffer aan de heidense goden of zich bezighouden met toverij. Hij mag geen boze geesten om hulp vragen, noch een waarzegger zijn. 11Hij mag geen slangen bezweren, medium of tovenaar zijn of de geesten van de doden oproepen. 12De Here heeft een diepe afkeer van ieder die dit soort dingen doet. Daarom zal de Here, uw God, de volken die zich met deze zaken bezighouden, uit het land verdrijven. 13U moet een zuiver leven leiden voor de Here, uw God. 14De volken waarvan u het land in bezit zult nemen, houden zich allemaal bezig met zaken als toverij en waarzeggerij. Maar de Here, uw God, zal niet toestaan dat u dat ook doet.
15De Here zal een profeet in uw midden laten opstaan, iemand zoals ik. U moet naar hem luisteren. 16U hebt God zelf daarom gesmeekt bij de berg Horeb. Daar aan de voet van de berg smeekte u dat u nooit meer zou hoeven luisteren naar de stem van God of het vuur op de berg zou hoeven zien, omdat u anders bang was om te sterven. 17“Goed,” zei de Here tegen mij, “Ik zal doen wat zij Mij hebben gevraagd. 18Uit het midden van uw broeders zal een profeet opstaan zoals u. Ik zal mijn woorden in zijn mond leggen en hij zal zeggen wat Ik hem opdraag. 19Ik zal rekenschap vragen van degene die niet gelooft wat hij namens Mij zegt.
20Maar iedere profeet die zegt dat hij namens Mij spreekt, maar dat niet doet of die zegt een boodschap van andere goden te brengen, moet sterven.” 21Als u zich afvraagt: “Hoe kunnen wij er achter komen of die boodschap nu wel of niet van de Here afkomstig is?”, 22is dit het antwoord: als zijn profetie niet uitkomt, heeft de Here hem zijn boodschap niet gegeven, hij heeft hem zelf verzonnen. Van zo iemand hoeft u zich niets aan te trekken.’
1The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance. 2Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.
3¶ And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw. 4The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him. 5For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.
6¶ And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the LORD shall choose; 7Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD. 8They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.18.8 that…: Heb. his sale by the fathers
9¶ When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. 10There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. 13Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.18.13 perfect: or, upright, or, sincere 14For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.18.14 possess: or, inherit
15¶ The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; 16According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not. 17And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. 18I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. 20But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
