David: een beroemd man
1David versloeg korte tijd later de Filistijnen, onderwierp hen en nam het bestuur over hun hoofdstad over. 2Tevens nam hij het land van Moab in bezit. Hij verdeelde zijn slachtoffers en liet hen twee aan twee in rijen op de grond liggen. Tweederde van elke rij, met een meetlint gemeten, doodde hij en eenderde werd gespaard om zijn dienaren te worden, elk jaar betaalden zij hem belasting.
3Hij versloeg ook de troepen van koning Hadadezer van Zoba, een zoon van Rechob, in een veldslag bij de Eufraat. Hij deed dit omdat Hadadezer trachtte zijn invloed langs de Eufraat te herstellen. 4David nam daarbij zeventienhonderd ruiters en twintigduizend man voetvolk gevangen. Slechts honderd tuigpaarden hield hij, bij alle andere liet hij de pezen doorsnijden. 5De Syriërs kwamen uit Damascus Hadadezer te hulp. Ook van hen sneuvelden tweeëntwintigduizend man. 6David stationeerde enkele legergarnizoenen in Damascus waardoor de Syriërs werden onderworpen. Ook zij betaalden elk jaar belasting aan David. Zo gaf de Here hem overal waar hij ging, overwinningen. 7De gouden schilden van koning Hadadezers officieren bracht David naar Jeruzalem. 8Tevens voerde hij een grote buit aan koper, afkomstig uit Hadadezers steden Betach en Berothai, naar Jeruzalem. 9Toen koning Toï van Hamath hoorde over Davids overwinning op het leger van Hadadezer, 10stuurde hij zijn zoon Joram naar David om hem te begroeten en geluk te wensen met zijn overwinning op Hadadezer, want Hadadezer en Toï waren vijanden. Joram bracht daarbij geschenken van zilver, goud en koper voor David mee. 11-12 David wijdde dit alles aan de Here, samen met het zilver en het goud dat hij had buitgemaakt op Syrië, Moab, Ammon, de Filistijnen, Amalek en koning Hadadezer.
13Na zijn terugkeer van een overwinning op achttienduizend Edomieten in het Zoutdal, werd David een beroemd man. 14In heel Edom plaatste hij garnizoenen die ervoor zorgden dat het hele volk belasting betaalde, weer een voorbeeld van de manier waarop de Here hem overal overwinnaar maakte.
15David regeerde Israël op een rechtvaardige manier en was tegenover iedereen eerlijk. 16De bevelhebber van zijn leger was Joab, de zoon van Zeruja, en zijn kanselier was Josafat, de zoon van Ahilud. 17Zadok, de zoon van Ahitub, en Achimélech, de zoon van Abjathar, waren de hogepriesters en Sereja was de secretaris van de koning. 18Benaja, de zoon van Jojada, stond aan het hoofd van Davids lijfwacht en Davids zonen waren zijn adviseurs.

And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went. 7And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. 8And from Betah, and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.
9¶ When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer, 10Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. 14¶ And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.
15And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people. 16And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;8.16 recorder: or, remembrancer, or, writer of chronicles 17And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe;8.17 scribe: or, secretary 18And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief rulers.8.18 chief rulers: or, princes
