Amnon en Tamar
1Absalom, een van Davids zonen, had een knappe zuster, Tamar. Haar halfbroer Amnon werd verliefd op haar. 2Amnon kreeg het daar zo moeilijk mee dat hij ziek werd van liefdesverdriet. Omdat zij een maagd was, besefte Amnon dat hij haar onmogelijk kon benaderen. 3Amnon had echter een vindingrijke vriend: zijn neef Jonadab, de zoon van Davids broer Simea. 4Op een dag zei Jonadab tegen Amnon: ‘Wat is er toch aan de hand? Een zoon van de koning hoeft er toch niet elke morgen zo bedrukt uit te zien? Vertel op!’ Amnon bekende hem: ‘Ik ben verliefd op mijn halfzuster Tamar.’ 5‘Wel,’ zei Jonadab, ‘dan zal ik je vertellen wat je moet doen. Ga terug naar bed en doe net alsof je ziek bent. Als je vader naar je komt kijken, vraag dan of hij Tamar wil laten komen om eten voor je klaar te maken. Zeg hem dat je je beter zult voelen als zij je te eten geeft.’ 6Dat leek Amnon een goed idee en toen de koning hem kwam opzoeken, vroeg Amnon hem of zijn zuster Tamar naar hem toe mocht komen om een paar hartenkoeken voor hem te bakken. 7David vond het goed en stuurde Tamar een boodschap dat zij naar Amnons woning moest gaan om koeken voor hem klaar te maken. 8Dat deed zij en Amnon kon vanaf zijn bed zien hoe zij deeg klaarmaakte en speciaal voor hem de hartenkoeken bakte. 9Maar toen zij hem het eten voorzette, weigerde hij er iets van te nemen! ‘Iedereen naar buiten,’ beval hij zijn dienaren en zij verlieten zijn woning. 10Toen zei hij tegen Tamar: ‘Breng me nu het eten opnieuw hier in mijn slaapkamer en geef het mij aan.’ 11Tamar bracht het naar hem toe, maar toen zij voor hem stond, greep hij haar en zei: ‘Kom bij mij in bed.’ 12‘O Amnon,’ riep zij. ‘Doe niet zo dom! Doe mij dit niet aan! Je weet heel goed dat dit een grote misdaad is in Israël. 13Waar zou ik met mijn schande naartoe moeten? En jij zou als een van de grootste dwazen in Israël worden beschouwd. Alsjeblieft, vraag het dan gewoon aan de koning. Die zal je heus wel toestaan met mij te trouwen.’ 14Maar hij luisterde niet naar haar en omdat hij sterker was, wist hij haar te overmeesteren en verkrachtte haar.
15Maar plotseling sloeg zijn liefde om in haat en zijn afkeer van haar was nu groter dan zijn liefde ooit was geweest. ‘Verdwijn!’ snauwde hij haar toe. 16‘Nee, alsjeblieft,’ riep zij. ‘Als je me nu afwijst, is dat een nog grotere misdaad dan wat je me net hebt aangedaan.’ Maar hij luisterde niet. 17-18 Hij riep zijn bediende en beval: ‘Gooi haar eruit en doe de deur op slot.’ Zo werd Tamar buiten de deur gezet. Zij droeg een lange jurk met mouwen, zoals in die tijd de gewoonte was voor maagdelijke dochters van de koning. 19Zij scheurde de jurk kapot en legde as op haar hoofd en met de handen voor haar gezicht liep zij huilend weg.
20Haar broer Absalom vroeg haar: ‘Is het waar dat Amnon bij je is geweest? Stil maar, gelukkig is het binnen de familie gebleven. Je hoeft je nergens zorgen over te maken.’ Zo nam Tamar als een eenzame vrouw haar intrek in Absaloms verblijven. 21Toen koning David hoorde wat er was gebeurd, werd hij erg kwaad. 22Absalom sprak niet met Amnon over deze zaak. Hij haatte hem echter hartgrondig om wat hij zijn zuster had aangedaan.
23-24 Twee jaar later, toen Absaloms schapen werden geschoren in Baäl-Hazor in Efraïm, nodigde Absalom zijn vader en al zijn broers uit het schaapscheerdersfeest bij te wonen. 25De koning ging echter niet op de uitnodiging in. ‘We kunnen toch niet allemaal komen, mijn jongen, we zouden je maar tot last zijn,’ zei hij. Absalom probeerde hem over te halen, maar hij wilde niet komen, al bedankte hij Absalom wel voor de uitnodiging. 26‘Als u dan niet wilt komen,’ opperde Absalom, ‘kunt u mijn broer Amnon dan niet sturen?’ ‘Waarom Amnon?’ vroeg de koning. 27Absalom bleef echter aandringen tot de koning toegaf en al zijn zonen toestemming gaf te gaan, ook Amnon.
28Intussen instrueerde Absalom zijn mannen: ‘Wacht tot Amnon dronken wordt en dood hem dan op mijn teken. Wees niet bang. Ik neem de verantwoording op me. Vat moed en voer mijn opdracht uit!’ 29Zo werd Amnon vermoord. De andere zonen van de koning sprongen op hun muildieren en gingen er vandoor.
30Terwijl zij nog onderweg waren naar Jeruzalem, kreeg de koning de boodschap: ‘Absalom heeft al uw zonen gedood, niemand is in leven gebleven!’ 31De koning sprong overeind, scheurde zijn mantel en liet zich languit op de grond vallen. Overmand door verdriet en afschuw volgden zijn dienaren zijn voorbeeld. 32-33 Maar precies op dat moment kwam Jonadab, de zoon van Davids broer Simea, binnen en zei: ‘Nee, ze zijn niet allemaal vermoord! Het was alleen Amnon! Absalom is dit al van plan geweest sinds het moment dat Amnon Tamar verkrachtte. Uw zonen zijn niet allemaal dood! Het ging alleen om Amnon.’
34Absalom vluchtte onmiddellijk na de moord. De wachter op de stadsmuur van Jeruzalem zag een grote groep mensen de stad naderen over de weg die langs de heuvel liep. 35‘Kom snel kijken,’ zei Jonadab tegen de koning. ‘Daar zijn ze! Uw zonen komen er aan, zoals ik u vertelde.’ 36Korte tijd later bereikten zij de stad, huilend en treurend, en de koning en zijn metgezellen konden hun tranen ook niet bedwingen.
37-39Absalom vluchtte naar koning Talmai van Gesur, waar hij drie jaar bleef. Ondertussen begon David, die Amnons dood had verwerkt, steeds meer te verlangen naar zijn zoon Absalom.

6¶ So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand. 7Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon’s house, and dress him meat. 8So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.13.8 flour: or, paste 9And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him. 10And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. 15¶ Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. But he would not hearken unto her. 17Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her. 18And she had a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.
19¶ And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying. 20And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. 21¶ But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth. 22And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
23¶ And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. 24And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant. 25And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him. 26Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee? 27But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.
28¶ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.13.28 have…: or, will you not, since I have commanded you?13.28 valiant: Heb. sons of valour 29And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. 30¶ And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left. 31Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent. 32And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.13.32 appointment: Heb. mouth13.32 determined: or, settled 33Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead. 34But Absalom fled. 37¶ But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur.
