Het einde van Asaʼs koningschap
1In het zesendertigste regeringsjaar van koning Asa verklaarde koning Baësa van Israël hem de oorlog en bouwde een fort bij Rama, waarmee hij de weg naar Juda afsloot. 2Asa reageerde al snel, hij haalde zilver en goud uit de tempel en het paleis en stuurde dat met de volgende boodschap naar koning Benhadad van Syrië in Damascus: 3‘Laten wij het niet-aanvalsverdrag vernieuwen dat uw en mijn vader met elkaar sloten. Hopelijk is dit zilver en goud voor u genoeg om uw bondgenootschap met koning Baësa van Israël te verbreken. Als u dat doet, zal hij mij met rust laten.’ 4Benhadad ging op koning Asaʼs verzoek in en stuurde zijn leger eropuit om Israël aan te vallen. Het verwoestte de steden Ijon, Dan, Abel-Maïm en alle voorraadsteden in Naftali. 5Zodra koning Baësa van Israël hoorde wat er gebeurde, legde hij de bouw aan het fort bij Rama stil en gaf hij zijn plan Juda aan te vallen op. 6Koning Asa en de inwoners van Juda trokken daarna naar Rama, haalden de stenen voor de bouw en het timmerhout weg en gebruikten dat om de steden Geba en Mispa te versterken.
7Rond die tijd kwam de profeet Hanani bij koning Asa en zei: ‘Omdat u de hulp van de koning van Syrië hebt ingeroepen in plaats van de hulp van de Here, uw God, is het leger van de koning van Syrië ontkomen. 8Herinnert u zich niet meer wat gebeurde met de Ethiopiërs en Libiërs en hun enorme leger met al die strijdwagens en ruiters? Maar toen vertrouwde u op de Here en gaf Hij hen in uw macht. 9Want de Here waakt over de hele aarde en biedt krachtige hulp aan mensen die Hem zijn toegewijd. Wat bent u onverstandig geweest! Van nu af aan zult u voortdurend in oorlog leven.’ 10Asa was zo boos om wat de profeet had gezegd dat hij hem gevangen liet nemen. Vanaf die tijd begon hij ook enkele mensen uit het volk op een wrede manier te behandelen.
11De verdere levensloop van koning Asa staat beschreven in de Boeken van de koningen van Juda en Israël. 12In zijn negenendertigste regeringsjaar kreeg Asa een ernstige ziekte aan zijn voeten. Hij zocht zijn heil echter niet bij de Here, maar bij zijn doktoren. 13-14 Hij stierf in zijn eenenveertigste regeringsjaar en werd begraven in een graf dat hij voor zichzelf in Jeruzalem had laten bouwen. Men legde hem neer op een bed dat was voorzien van allerlei kruiden en speciale zalven en tijdens zijn begrafenis brachten zijn onderdanen hem de laatste eer door een enorm vuur te ontsteken en een grote hoeveelheid reukwerk te verbranden.
Asa’s Last Years
1In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
2Asa then took the silver and gold out of the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and of his own palace and sent it to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus. 3“Let there be a treaty between me and you,” he said, “as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.”
4Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. They conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim16:4 Also known as Abel Beth Maakah and all the store cities of Naphtali. 5When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah and abandoned his work. 6Then King Asa brought all the men of Judah, and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using. With them he built up Geba and Mizpah.
7At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. 8Were not the Cushites16:8 That is, people from the upper Nile region and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen16:8 Or charioteers? Yet when you relied on the Lord, he delivered them into your hand. 9For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.”
10Asa was angry with the seer because of this; he was so enraged that he put him in prison. At the same time Asa brutally oppressed some of the people.
11The events of Asa’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 12In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the Lord, but only from the physicians. 13Then in the forty-first year of his reign Asa died and rested with his ancestors. 14They buried him in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a bier covered with spices and various blended perfumes, and they made a huge fire in his honor.
