David, koning van Israël
1De leiders van Israël kwamen bij David in Hebron en zeiden: ‘Wij zijn uw bloedeigen broeders. 2Zelfs toen Saul nog koning was, was u degene die onze legers aanvoerde in de strijd en ook weer veilig terugbracht. De Here, onze God, heeft u gezegd: “U zult de herder van mijn volk Israël zijn. U zult zijn koning zijn.” ’ 3Voor de ogen van de Here sloot David toen een verbond met hen en zij zalfden hem tot koning van Israël, precies zoals de Here het Samuël had opgedragen. 4David en de leiders gingen daarop naar Jeruzalem (dat in die tijd Jebus werd genoemd) waar de Jebusieten—de oorspronkelijke inwoners van het land—woonden. 5-6 Maar de mensen uit Jebus weigerden hem de toegang tot de stad. David veroverde daarop de burcht Sion, die later ‘Stad van David’ werd genoemd en zei tegen zijn mannen: ‘Wie van jullie het eerst een Jebusiet doodt, wordt tot opperbevelhebber bevorderd.’ Joab, de zoon van Zeruja, was de eerste en werd op die manier opperbevelhebber in Davids leger. 7David nam zijn intrek in de burcht en daarom wordt het sindsdien ‘Stad van David’ genoemd. 8Hij breidde de stad uit vanuit de burcht Millo, terwijl Joab de rest van Jeruzalem herbouwde. 9David werd steeds beroemder en machtiger, want de Here van de hemelse legers stond aan zijn kant.
10Dit zijn de namen van de moedigste helden onder Davids mannen. Zij oefenden veel druk uit op de leiders van Israël om hem tot hun koning te maken, zoals de Here had voorzegd: 11Jasobam, de zoon van Hachmoni, was de voornaamste van de drie grootste helden onder Davids mannen. Hij doodde eens driehonderd mannen met zijn speer. 12De tweede van de drie was Eleazar, de zoon van de Ahohiet Dodo. 13Hij bevond zich in Davids gezelschap tijdens de veldslag tegen de Filistijnen bij Pas-Dammim. Het Israëlitische leger bevond zich in een akker met gerst, maar sloeg al gauw op de vlucht. 14Hij hield echter stand, midden op de akker, heroverde hem en doodde de Filistijnen. De Here schonk door hem een grote overwinning.
15Een andere keer zochten drie van de dertig aanvoerders David op in de grot van Adullam, waar hij zich verborgen hield. De Filistijnen hadden hun kamp opgeslagen in het dal van Refaïm. 16David bevond zich op dat moment in de vesting, een legergroep van de Filistijnen had inmiddels Bethlehem ingenomen. 17David hunkerde ernaar iets te drinken uit de put in Bethlehem, die daar vlakbij de poort lag. En toen hij dat tegen zijn mannen zei, 18-19 braken deze drie door de Filistijnse linies, haalden wat water uit de bron en brachten dat naar David. Maar hij wilde het niet opdrinken! In plaats daarvan goot hij het uit als een offer aan de Here en zei: ‘God moge mij iets aandoen, als ik dit opdrink. Dit is het bloed van de mannen die hun levens waagden om het te halen!’
20Joabs broer Abisaï was de aanvoerder van de groep van dertig. Hij had zijn plaats onder hen verworven door ook ooit driehonderd mannen te doden met zijn speer. 21Hij was de leider en beroemdste man van de dertig, maar bereikte niet het peil van de eerstgenoemde drie.
22Benaja, wiens vader Jojada was, een vermaard strijder uit Kabzeël, doodde de twee beroemde reuzen uit Moab. Tevens doodde hij eens helemaal alleen een leeuw. Dat was op zichzelf nog niet zo bijzonder, maar wel dat hij dat deed in een glibberige modderkuil, terwijl er een laag sneeuw lag. 23Ook doodde hij eens een Egyptenaar van ruim twee meter, wiens speer zo dik was als de boom van een weefgetouw. Benaja ging op hem af, alleen gewapend met een stok, trok de speer uit zijn handen en doodde hem toen met zijn eigen wapen. 24-25 Deze Benaja was bijna net zo beroemd als de drie grote helden en had onder de groep van dertig een grote reputatie. David benoemde hem tot hoofd van zijn lijfwacht.
26-47Andere beroemde strijders onder Davids mannen waren: Asaël, de broer van Joab; Elhanan, de zoon van Dodo uit Bethlehem; Sammoth uit Haror; Helez uit Pelon; Ira, de zoon van Ikkes uit Tekoa; Abiëzer uit Anathoth; Sibbechai uit Husath; Ilai uit Ahoh; Maharai uit Netofath; Heled, de zoon van Baäna uit Netofath; Ithai, de zoon van Ribai, een Benjaminiet uit Gibea; Benaja uit Pirathon; Hurai uit de dalen van Gaäs; Abiël uit Arbath; Azmaveth uit Baharum; Eljahba uit Saälbon; de zonen van Hasem uit Gizon; Jonathan, de zoon van Sagé uit Harar; Ahiam, de zoon van Sachar uit Harar; Elifal, de zoon van Ur; Chefer uit Mecherath; Ahia uit Pelon; Hezro uit Karmel; Naärai, de zoon van Ezbai; Joël, de broer van Nathan; Mibhar, de zoon van Hagri; Zelek uit Ammon; Nahrai uit Beëroth; hij was de wapendrager van bevelhebber Joab; Ira uit Jethri; Gareb uit Jethri; de Hethiet Uria; Zabad, de zoon van Achlai; Adina, de zoon van Siza, een lid van de stam van Ruben en bovendien een van de eenendertig stamhoofden; Hanan, de zoon van Maächa; Josafat uit Mithna; Uzzia uit Asterath; Sama en Jeiël, de zonen van Hotham uit Aroër; Jediaël, de zoon van Simri; zijn broer Joha uit Tiza; Eliël uit Mahavim; Jeribai en Josavja, de zonen van Elnaäm; Jithma uit Moab; Eliël, Obed en Jaäsiël uit Mezobaja.
David Becomes King Over Israel
1The whole community of Israel came together to see David at Hebron. They said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2In the past, Saul was our king. But you led the men of Israel in battle. The Lord your God said to you, ‘You will be the shepherd over my people Israel. You will become their ruler.’ ”
3All the elders of Israel came to see King David at Hebron. There he made a covenant with them in front of the Lord. They anointed David as king over Israel. It happened just as the Lord had promised through Samuel.
David Captures Jerusalem
4David and all the men of Israel marched to Jerusalem. Jerusalem was also called Jebus. The Jebusites who lived there 5said to David, “You won’t get in here.” But David captured the fort of Zion. It became known as the City of David.
6David had said, “Anyone who leads the attack against the Jebusites will become the commander of Israel’s army.” Joab went up first. So he became the commander of the army. He was the son of Zeruiah.
7David moved into the fort. So it was called the City of David. 8He built up the city around the fort. He filled in the low places. He built a wall around it. During that time, Joab built up the rest of the city. 9David became more and more powerful. That’s because the Lord who rules over all was with him.
David’s Mighty Warriors
10The chiefs of David’s mighty warriors and the whole community of Israel helped David greatly. They helped him become king over the entire land. That’s exactly what the Lord had promised him. 11Here is a list of David’s mighty warriors.
Jashobeam was chief of the officers. He was a Hakmonite. He used his spear against 300 men. He killed all of them at one time.
12Next to him was Eleazar. He was one of the three mighty warriors. He was the son of Dodai, the Ahohite. 13Jashobeam was with David at Pas Dammim. The Philistines had gathered there for battle. Israel’s troops ran away from the Philistines. At the place where that happened, there was a field full of barley. 14The three mighty warriors took their stand in the middle of the field. They didn’t let the Philistines capture it. They struck them down. The Lord helped them win a great battle.
15David was near the rock at the cave of Adullam. Three of the 30 chiefs came down to him there. A group of Philistines was camped in the Valley of Rephaim. 16At that time David was in his usual place of safety. Some Philistine troops were stationed at Bethlehem. 17David really wanted some water. He said, “I wish someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 18So the three mighty warriors fought their way past the Philistine guards. They got some water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem. They took the water back to David. But David refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as a drink offering to the Lord. 19“I would never drink that water!” David said. “It would be like drinking the blood of these men. They put their lives in danger by going to Bethlehem.” The men had put their lives in danger by bringing the water back. So David wouldn’t drink it.
Those were some of the brave things the three mighty warriors did.
20Abishai was chief over the three mighty warriors. He was the brother of Joab. Abishai used his spear against 300 men. He killed all of them. So he became as famous as the three mighty warriors. 21He was honored twice as much as the three mighty warriors. He became their commander. But he wasn’t included among them.
22Benaiah was a great hero from Kabzeel. He was the son of Jehoiada. Benaiah did many brave things. He struck down two of Moab’s best fighting men. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day. He killed a lion there. 23And Benaiah struck down an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall. The Egyptian was holding a spear as big as a weaver’s rod. Benaiah went out to fight against him with a club. He grabbed the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand. Then he killed him with it. 24Those were some of the brave things Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, did. He too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. 25He was honored more than any of the 30 chiefs. But he wasn’t included among the three mighty warriors. And David put him in charge of his own personal guards.
