Gods boodschap aan koning Achab
1Drie jaar na deze gebeurtenis zei de Here tegen Elia: ‘Ga naar koning Achab en zeg hem dat Ik spoedig weer regen zal sturen.’ 2Elia ging de boodschap overbrengen. Ondertussen was de hongersnood in Samaria nijpend geworden. 3-4 Het hoofd van Achabs hofhouding heette Obadja en was een toegewijd volgeling van de Here. Toen koningin Izébel eens probeerde alle profeten van de Here uit te roeien, had Obadja honderd profeten verborgen in twee grotten—vijftig in elke grot—en hij had hen verzorgd met brood en water.
5Koning Achab zei tegen Obadja: ‘Wij moeten elk riviertje en elke beek afzoeken of we nog ergens gras kunnen vinden om tenminste enkele van mijn paarden en muildieren in leven te houden. 6U gaat de ene kant op en ik de andere. We zullen het hele land uitkammen.’ Zo gingen de beide mannen op pad.
7Plotseling zag Obadja Elia op zich afkomen. Hij herkende hem onmiddellijk en liet zich voor hem op de grond vallen. ‘Bent u het werkelijk, Elia?’ vroeg hij. 8‘Ja, ik ben het,’ antwoordde Elia. ‘Ga de koning maar vertellen dat ik er aankom.’ 9‘Wat heb ik gedaan,’ zei Obadja, ‘dat u mij aan Achab uitlevert en ik het gevaar loop dat hij mij ter dood brengt? 10Want ik zweer bij God dat de koning elk volk en elk land heeft doorzocht om u te vinden. En elke keer dat hij te horen kreeg “Elia is hier niet,” dwong hij de koning van dat land te zweren dat hij de waarheid sprak. 11En nu zegt u dat ik hem moet gaan vertellen dat u hier bent! 12Maar wie garandeert mij dat, zo gauw ik u hier achterlaat, de Geest van de Here u niet zal wegdragen, wie weet waar naar toe. Als Achab dan komt en u hier niet aantreft, zal hij mij doden. Ik ben toch mijn hele leven een trouw dienaar van de Here geweest? 13Heeft niemand u verteld dat ik honderd profeten heb verborgen in twee grotten en hen heb verzorgd met brood en water, toen Izébel probeerde alle profeten van de Here te doden? 14En nu zegt u: “Ga de koning vertellen dat Elia er is”. Heer, als u dat doet, betekent het mijn dood!’ 15Maar Elia zei: ‘Ik zweer bij de Here van de hemelse legers, namens wie ik hier sta, dat ik mij vandaag aan Achab zal vertonen.’
De strijd op de Karmel
16Toen ging Obadja naar Achab om hem te vertellen dat Elia er was en Achab ging naar hem toe. 17‘Zo, daar bent u dus: de man die deze ramp over Israël heeft gebracht!’ riep Achab toen hij hem zag. 18‘Niet ik heb deze ramp over Israël gebracht,’ zei Elia rustig, ‘maar u en uw familie hebben geweigerd de Here te gehoorzamen en hebben in plaats van Hem Baäl aanbeden. 19Laat alle Israëlieten samenkomen bij de berg Karmel, samen met alle vierhonderdvijftig profeten van Baäl en de vierhonderd profeten van Asjéra, die door Izébel worden ondersteund.’ 20Achab riep daarop het hele volk en alle profeten samen bij de berg Karmel.
21Elia richtte toen het woord tot hen. ‘Hoe lang blijft u nog op twee gedachten hinken?’ vroeg hij het volk. ‘Als de Here uw God is, volg Hem dan. Maar als Baäl god is, moet u die volgen!’ 22Hij ging verder: ‘Ik ben de enig overgebleven profeet van de Here, maar Baäl heeft vierhonderdvijftig profeten! 23Breng twee jonge stieren hier. De profeten van Baäl mogen er één uitkiezen, hem in stukken snijden en die op het hout van het altaar leggen, echter zonder het hout aan te steken. Ik zal dan de andere jonge stier klaarmaken en hem op het hout van het altaar van de Here leggen, ook zonder het hout in brand te steken. 24Bid dan tot uw god en ik zal tot de Here bidden. De god die antwoordt door met vuur het hout aan te steken, is de ware God!’ Iedereen ging akkoord met deze proef. 25Elia wendde zich tot de profeten van Baäl en zei: ‘Gaat u maar voor, want u bent met zovelen. Kies een van de stieren, maak hem klaar en roep uw god aan. Maar steek het hout niet zelf in brand.’ 26Zij maakten een van de jonge stieren klaar en legden hem op het altaar. Daarna riepen zij de hele morgen Baäl aan met de kreet: ‘O Baäl, luister naar ons!’ Maar er kwam geen enkel antwoord. Toen begonnen zij om het altaar te dansen. 27Rond het middaguur begon Elia spottend commentaar te leveren. ‘U zult wat harder moeten schreeuwen,’ zei hij, ‘om de aandacht van uw god te trekken. Misschien is hij met iemand anders aan het praten of is hij ergens druk mee bezig. Wacht! Misschien is hij op reis. Of zou hij slapen? Dan moet u hem wakker maken.’ 28Zij begonnen nog harder te schreeuwen en, zoals hun gewoonte was, zichzelf met messen en zwaarden te snijden tot het bloed uit hun wonden gutste. 29De hele middag bleven ze schreeuwen en hielden vol tot het tijd werd voor het avondoffer. Er kwam echter geen antwoord, geen stem, helemaal niets.
30Toen riep Elia naar het volk: ‘Kom dichterbij!’ Iedereen verdrong zich rondom hem, toen hij het vernielde altaar van de Here overeind zette. 31-32 Hij pakte twaalf stenen, één voor elke stam van Israël, en gebruikte die om het altaar van de Here opnieuw op te bouwen. Daarna groef hij rond het altaar een brede greppel. 33-34 Hij stapelde hout op het altaar, sneed de jonge stier in stukken en legde die op het hout. ‘Vul vier kruiken met water,’ zei hij, ‘en giet het water over het offervlees en het hout.’ Nadat zij dat hadden gedaan, zei hij: ‘Doe het nog maar een keer.’ En dat deden zij. ‘Doe het nu nog maar een keer.’ En voor de derde keer gooiden zij water over het altaar, 35zodat het water er af liep en de greppel vulde.
36Op de tijd dat gewoonlijk het avondoffer werd gebracht, liep Elia naar het altaar en bad: ‘O Here, God van Abraham, Isaak en Israël, laat vandaag zien dat U de God van Israël bent en ik uw dienaar ben, laat zien dat ik dit alles op uw bevel heb gedaan! 37O Here, geef mij antwoord. Verhoor mijn gebed, zodat deze mensen zullen erkennen dat U God bent en dat U hen tot U Zelf terugbrengt.’ 38Toen schoot plotseling vuur vanuit de hemel naar beneden en verbrandde de jonge stier, het hout, de stenen en het stof en verdampte zelfs het water dat in de greppel stond. 39Toen de mensen dat zagen, vielen zij met hun gezicht naar beneden op de grond, en schreeuwden: ‘De Here is God! De Here is God!’ 40Elia droeg hun op de profeten van Baäl gevangen te nemen. ‘Laat er niet één ontsnappen,’ beval hij. Zij grepen alle profeten en Elia nam hen mee naar de beek Kison, waar hij hen allemaal liet doden.
41Tegen Achab zei hij: ‘Ga maar vast en geniet van een goede maaltijd, want ik hoor het geruis van een stortregen naderen.’ 42Daarop liet Achab een feestelijke maaltijd klaarmaken. Maar Elia klom naar de top van de berg Karmel en lag een tijd languit op de grond, daarna boog hij ineen met zijn hoofd tussen zijn knieën. 43Na een tijdje zei hij tegen zijn dienaar: ‘Kijk eens in de richting van de zee.’ De dienaar deed dat, maar kwam terug bij Elia en zei: ‘Ik heb niets gezien.’ Elia zei: ‘Ga nog maar een keer kijken en dan nog een keer en nog een keer, zevenmaal.’ 44Ten slotte, bij de zevende keer, zei zijn dienaar tegen hem: ‘Ik zag een kleine wolk, zo groot als een mannenhand, uit de zee opstijgen.’ Elia riep: ‘Ga snel naar Achab en zeg hem in zijn rijtuig te stappen en naar huis te gaan, anders zal de stortregen hem tegenhouden!’ 45En inderdaad, kort daarna verduisterden grote regenwolken de hemel en een harde wind voerde een zware stortregen aan. Achab reed snel weg naar de stad Jizreël. 46Maar de Here gaf Elia speciale kracht, zodat hij vóór de wagen van Achab uit kon rennen naar de ingang van de stad.

7¶ And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah? 8And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 9And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me? 10As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. 11And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 12And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth. 13Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me. 15And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day. 16So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17¶ And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? 18And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim. 19Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table. 20So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.
21And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And he said, Go again seven times. 44And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand.
