Jona verkündet Gottes Botschaft in Ninive
(Kapitel 3–4)
Jona führt Gottes Auftrag aus
1Da empfing Jona wieder eine Botschaft vom Herrn. Zum zweiten Mal sprach Gott zu ihm: 2»Geh in die große und mächtige Stadt Ninive und verkünde den Menschen dort, was ich dir auftrage!«
3Diesmal machte sich Jona auf den Weg nach Ninive, wie der Herr es ihm befohlen hatte. Die Stadt war so groß, dass man drei Tage brauchte, um sie zu durchqueren. 4Jona ging in die Stadt hinein, und nachdem er einen Tag lang gelaufen war, rief er: »Noch vierzig Tage, dann legt Gott Ninive in Schutt und Asche!«
5Da glaubten die Einwohner von Ninive an Gott. Sie beschlossen zu fasten, und alle, von den einflussreichsten bis zu den einfachen Leuten, zogen als Zeichen ihrer Reue Kleider aus grobem Stoff an.
6Auch dem König von Ninive war Jonas Botschaft ausgerichtet worden. Er stieg von seinem Thron und legte sein Herrschergewand ab. Stattdessen zog er ein Bußgewand an und setzte sich in die Asche. 7In der ganzen Stadt ließ er ausrufen: »Hört, was der König und die führenden Männer anordnen: Niemand darf etwas essen oder trinken, weder die Menschen noch die Rinder, Schafe und Ziegen. 8Menschen und Tiere sollen Tücher aus grobem Stoff tragen und mit aller Macht zu Gott schreien. Jeder muss von seinen falschen Wegen umkehren! Keiner darf dem anderen mehr Unrecht tun! 9Vielleicht lässt sich Gott ja noch umstimmen und hat Erbarmen mit uns; vielleicht wendet er seinen glühenden Zorn von uns ab, und wir kommen mit dem Leben davon.«
10Gott sah, dass die Menschen von ihren falschen Wegen umkehrten. Da taten sie ihm leid, und er ließ das angedrohte Unheil nicht über sie hereinbrechen.
Jonah Goes to Nineveh
1A message from the Lord came to Jonah a second time. The Lord said, 2“Go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce to its people the message I give you.”
3Jonah obeyed the Lord. He went to Nineveh. It was a very large city. In fact, it took about three days to go through it. 4Jonah began by going one whole day into the city. As he went, he announced, “In 40 days Nineveh will be destroyed.” 5The people of Nineveh believed God’s warning. So they decided not to eat any food for a while. And all of them put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. That’s what everyone did, from the least important of them to the most important.
6Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh. He got up from his throne. He took off his royal robes. He also dressed himself in the clothing of sadness. And then he sat down in the dust. 7Here is the message he sent out to the people of Nineveh.
“I and my nobles give this order.
Don’t let people or animals taste anything. That includes your herds and flocks. People and animals must not eat or drink anything. 8Let people and animals alike be covered with the clothing of sadness. All of you must call out to God with all your hearts. Stop doing what is evil. Don’t harm others. 9Who knows? God might take pity on us. He might not be angry with us anymore. Then we won’t die.”
10God saw what they did. He saw that they stopped doing what was evil. So he took pity on them. He didn’t destroy them as he had said he would.
