Hesekiels Berufung zum Propheten

Hesekiel sieht den Herrn in seiner Herrlichkeit
1Im 30. Jahr1,1‒3 Das »30. Jahr« bezieht sich vermutlich auf Hesekiels Alter. lebte ich mit den verbannten Judäern am Fluss Kebar in Babylonien. Am 5. Tag des 4. Monats öffnete sich plötzlich der Himmel über mir, und ich hatte eine Vision. –
2-3Mit diesen Worten beginnt der Bericht des Propheten Hesekiel. Er war ein Sohn von Busi und stammte aus einer jüdischen Priesterfamilie. Fünf Jahre nachdem König Jojachin nach Babylon verschleppt worden war, wurde Hesekiel zum ersten Mal vom Herrn ergriffen1,2‒3 Wörtlich: kam die Hand des Herrn über ihn. – Die Hand ist hier ein Symbol für Gottes Wirken und Macht. Mit dieser Wendung wird im Buch Hesekiel häufig eine Vision oder Botschaft Gottes an den Propheten eingeleitet. Vgl. Kapitel 3,14.22; 8,1; 37,1; 40,1.. Im Folgenden sind die Botschaften aufgeschrieben, die Gott ihm gab, während er am Fluss Kebar in Babylonien wohnte:
4Ich sah von Norden einen Sturm heranbrausen, der eine große Wolke vor sich hertrieb. Blitze schossen aus ihr hervor, und ein heller Glanz umgab sie. Dann öffnete sich die Wolke, und aus ihrem Inneren strahlte ein Licht wie von glänzendem Metall.
5In dem Licht erschienen vier lebendige Wesen, die wie Menschen aussahen. 6Doch jedes von ihnen hatte vier Gesichter und vier Flügel. 7Ihre Beine waren gerade wie die eines Menschen, aber statt der Füße hatten sie die Hufe eines Stieres, die wie polierte Bronze glänzten. 8Jede Gestalt besaß vier Hände, je eine Hand unter jedem Flügel. 9Mit ihren Flügeln berührten die Gestalten einander. Beim Gehen brauchten sie sich nie umzudrehen, denn in jede Richtung blickte eines ihrer Gesichter. 10Jedes sah anders aus: Vorne war das Gesicht eines Menschen, rechts das eines Löwen, links das eines Stieres und hinten das eines Adlers. 11Zwei ihrer Flügel hatten sie nach oben ausgespannt, und ihre Spitzen berührten die der anderen Gestalten. Mit den anderen zwei Flügeln bedeckten sie ihren Leib. 12Sie gingen, wohin der Geist Gottes sie trieb, ohne sich je umzudrehen.
13Zwischen den Gestalten bemerkte ich etwas, das wie glühende Kohlen aussah und wie Fackeln, die sich hin- und herbewegten. Das Feuer leuchtete, und Blitze schossen aus ihm hervor. 14Die Gestalten liefen so schnell umher, dass sie selbst zuckenden Blitzen glichen.
15Als ich sie genauer betrachtete, entdeckte ich vier Räder auf dem Boden – eines vor jeder Gestalt. 16Sie schienen aus Edelsteinen zu bestehen. Alle vier waren gleich gebaut; mitten in jedes Rad war ein zweites im rechten Winkel eingefügt, 17und so konnten sie in jede beliebige Richtung laufen, ohne zu wenden. 18Die Felgen der Räder sahen furchterregend aus: Sie waren sehr groß und ringsum mit Augen bedeckt. 19Wenn die vier Gestalten gingen, dann liefen auch die Räder mit; und wenn die Gestalten sich von der Erde erhoben, dann hoben sich auch die Räder. 20Sie gingen, wohin Gottes Geist sie trieb, und die Räder bewegten sich mit ihnen, denn ein und derselbe Geist lenkte sie1,20 Wörtlich: denn der Geist des lebendigen Wesens war in den Rädern. – Der hebräische Text ist nicht sicher zu deuten. . 21Ganz gleich ob die Gestalten sich bewegten oder stillstanden oder sich erhoben – die Räder taten immer dasselbe.
22Über den Köpfen der Gestalten entdeckte ich etwas, das aussah wie ein Gewölbe aus leuchtendem Kristall, und ich erschrak bei seinem Anblick. 23Jedes der Lebewesen darunter hatte zwei seiner Flügel zu der Gestalt neben sich ausgestreckt; mit den beiden anderen Flügeln bedeckte es seinen Leib. 24Wenn die vier sich bewegten, rauschten ihre Flügel wie das Brausen großer Wassermassen, ja, wie die Stimme des allmächtigen Gottes. Es war so laut wie die Rufe einer großen Menschenmenge oder der Lärm in einem Heerlager. Wenn die Wesen aber stillstanden, ließen sie ihre Flügel herabhängen.
25Plötzlich hörte ich eine Stimme aus dem Gewölbe über ihnen, da blieben sie stehen und senkten ihre Flügel. 26Oberhalb des Gewölbes über ihren Köpfen bemerkte ich so etwas wie einen Thron, der aus Saphir zu sein schien. Darauf saß eine Gestalt, die einem Menschen glich. 27Von der Hüfte an aufwärts schimmerte ihr Leib wie Metall in einem Feuerkranz; unterhalb der Hüfte sah sie aus wie Feuer, umgeben von hellem Lichtglanz. 28In dem Licht konnte ich alle Farben des Regenbogens entdecken. Es war die Erscheinung des Herrn in seiner Herrlichkeit. Bei ihrem Anblick fiel ich nieder und berührte mit meinem Gesicht den Boden. Dann hörte ich eine Stimme.

4¶ And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.1.4 infolding…: Heb. catching itself 5Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. 6And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. 7And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.1.7 straight…: Heb. a straight foot 8And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings. 9Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. 10As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. 11Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.1.11 stretched…: or, divided above 12And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went. 13As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. 14And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.
15¶ Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. 16The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. 17When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went. 18As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.1.18 and their rings: or, and their strakes 19And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. 20Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.1.20 of…: or, of life 21When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.1.21 of…: or, of life 22And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. 23And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. 24And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings. 25And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings.
26¶ And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. 27And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. 28As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.
