Das achte Strafgericht: Heuschrecken
1Der Herr befahl Mose: »Geh zum Pharao! Ich habe dafür gesorgt, dass er und seine Hofbeamten unnachgiebig bleiben. Denn ich will mitten unter ihnen Zeichen und Wunder vollbringen, 2damit ihr euren Kindern und Enkeln erzählen könnt, wie ich die Ägypter zur Schau gestellt und große Dinge unter ihnen getan habe. So werdet ihr erkennen, dass ich der Herr bin!«
3Mose und Aaron gingen wieder zum Pharao und sagten: »So spricht der Herr, der Gott der Hebräer: Wie lange weigerst du dich noch, dich mir zu unterwerfen? Lass mein Volk ziehen, es soll mir dienen! 4Sonst sorge ich dafür, dass morgen Heuschreckenschwärme über dein Land herfallen. 5Dann wird man vor lauter Heuschrecken den Boden nicht mehr sehen! Sie werden alles kahl fressen, was den Hagel überstanden hat, auch die Bäume. 6Sie dringen in deinen Palast ein, in die Häuser deiner Hofbeamten und in alle anderen Häuser in Ägypten. Diese Heuschreckenplage wird die schlimmste sein, die ihr Ägypter je erlebt habt, seit ihr in diesem Land wohnt!« Mose drehte sich um und verließ den Palast.
7Da drängten die Hofbeamten den Pharao: »Wie lange soll uns dieser Mann noch Schaden zufügen? Lass die Leute doch gehen und dem Herrn, ihrem Gott, dienen! Merkst du denn immer noch nicht, dass unser Land Ägypten zugrunde geht?«
8Der Pharao ließ Mose und Aaron zurückholen und sagte: »Zieht los und opfert dem Herrn, eurem Gott! Wer von euch soll denn mitgehen?« 9Mose antwortete: »Wir wollen mit Jung und Alt losziehen, mit unseren Söhnen und Töchtern, und auch unsere Schaf-, Ziegen- und Rinderherden nehmen wir mit. Schließlich wollen wir gemeinsam ein Fest zu Ehren des Herrn feiern!«
10Da spottete der Pharao: »O ja, geht nur mit dem Segen des Herrn! Ich werde euch aber niemals mit euren Familien ziehen lassen. Es ist offensichtlich, dass ihr Böses im Schilde führt!
11Nein, nur ihr Männer dürft das Land verlassen, um dem Herrn, eurem Gott, zu opfern. Das ist es doch, was ihr wollt!« Darauf ließ der König Mose und Aaron hinauswerfen.
12Der Herr befahl Mose: »Streck deine Hand über Ägypten aus! Dann werden Heuschrecken über das Land herfallen und alle Pflanzen kahl fressen, die vom Hagel verschont geblieben sind.«
13Mose streckte seinen Stab aus, und der Herr ließ einen Ostwind aufkommen, der den ganzen Tag und die folgende Nacht wehte. Am nächsten Morgen hatte der Wind riesige Schwärme von Heuschrecken herangetrieben.
14Sie fielen über ganz Ägypten her und ließen sich in allen Teilen des Landes nieder. Es war eine Heuschreckenplage, wie sie vorher noch nie dagewesen war und auch nicht wieder auftreten sollte. 15Die Heuschrecken verfinsterten den Himmel und bedeckten den Erdboden im ganzen Land. Sie fraßen die Früchte und alles andere am Boden und an den Bäumen ab, was vom Hagel verschont geblieben war. In ganz Ägypten fand sich an den Bäumen kein einziges grünes Blatt und auf den Feldern kein einziger Halm.
16Schnell ließ der Pharao Mose und Aaron zu sich rufen. »Ich habe gegen den Herrn, euren Gott, gesündigt und auch gegen euch«, gab er zu. 17»Vergebt mir noch dieses eine Mal meine Schuld! Betet zum Herrn, eurem Gott, und bittet ihn, dass er uns von dieser tödlichen Plage befreit!«
18Mose verließ den Palast und betete zum Herrn. 19Da ließ der Herr einen starken Westwind aufkommen, der die Heuschrecken wegblies und ins Schilfmeer trieb. Im ganzen Land blieb keine einzige mehr übrig. 20Doch auch dieses Mal sorgte der Herr dafür, dass der Pharao hart blieb und die Israeliten nicht ziehen ließ.
Das neunte Strafgericht: Finsternis
21Der Herr sprach zu Mose: »Streck deine Hand zum Himmel aus! Dann wird sich eine Dunkelheit über Ägypten ausbreiten, die man mit Händen greifen kann.« 22Mose erhob seine Hand zum Himmel, und eine völlige Finsternis kam über ganz Ägypten. Drei Tage lang blieb es so dunkel, 23dass keiner den anderen sehen und niemand sein Haus verlassen konnte. Nur wo die Israeliten wohnten, war es hell.
24Wieder ließ der Pharao Mose zu sich rufen und sagte: »Zieht los und dient dem Herrn, eurem Gott! Ihr dürft auch eure Familien mitnehmen. Nur eure Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder sollen hierbleiben.« 25Aber Mose widersprach: »Du musst uns schon erlauben, Tiere mitzunehmen, die wir dem Herrn, unserem Gott, als Schlacht- und Brandopfer darbringen können! 26Darum muss auch unser Vieh mit uns gehen, kein einziges Tier darf zurückbleiben! Denn aus unseren Herden müssen wir die Opfertiere für den Herrn, unseren Gott, auswählen. Und solange wir noch nicht in der Wüste sind, wissen wir gar nicht, welche Tiere wir dafür brauchen.«
27Doch der Herr ließ den Pharao starrsinnig werden, so dass er den Israeliten die Erlaubnis verweigerte. 28»Verschwinde!«, rief der König. »Wage es nicht, mir noch einmal unter die Augen zu treten, sonst bist du ein toter Mann!« 29Da antwortete Mose: »Du hast recht, ich werde dich nie wiedersehen!«
1And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him: 2And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son’s son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD. 3And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me. 4Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, to morrow will I bring the locusts into thy coast: 5And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field:10.5 face: Heb. eye 6And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day. And he turned himself, and went out from Pharaoh. 7And Pharaoh’s servants said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God: knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed? 8And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go?10.8 who…: Heb. who and who, etc 9And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD. 10And he said unto them, Let the LORD be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones: look to it; for evil is before you. 11Not so: go now ye that are men, and serve the LORD; for that ye did desire. And they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.
12¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left. 13And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such. 15For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.
16¶ Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said, I have sinned against the LORD your God, and against you.10.16 called: Heb. hastened to call 17Now therefore forgive, I pray thee, my sin only this once, and intreat the LORD your God, that he may take away from me this death only. 18And he went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the LORD. 19And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Red sea; there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt.10.19 cast: Heb. fastened 20But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go.
21¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.10.21 even…: Heb. that one may feel darkness 22And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: 23They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
24¶ And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you. 25And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God.10.25 us: Heb. into our hands 26Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come thither.
27¶ But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. 28And Pharaoh said unto him, Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more; for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die. 29And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face again no more.
