Paulus verteidigt sich gegen Vorwürfe
(Kapitel 10–13)
Abwehr persönlicher Angriffe
1Ich, Paulus, möchte mit euch noch eine persönliche Angelegenheit klären, im Geist der Güte und Freundlichkeit, die Christus uns schenkt. Einige von euch sagen mir nach, ich sei feige und ängstlich, solange ich bei euch bin, aber mutig und zu allem entschlossen, wenn ich mich nur weit genug von euch entfernt habe. 2Zwingt mich bitte nicht dazu, tatsächlich hart durchgreifen zu müssen, wenn ich zu euch komme. Auf jeden Fall werde ich entschieden gegen alle vorgehen, die mir allzu menschliche Absichten unterstellen.
3Natürlich bin auch ich nur ein Mensch, aber ich kämpfe nicht mit menschlichen Mitteln. 4Ich setze nicht die Waffen dieser Welt ein, sondern die Waffen Gottes. Sie sind mächtig genug, jede Festung zu zerstören, jedes menschliche Gedankengebäude niederzureißen, 5einfach alles zu vernichten, was sich stolz gegen Gott und seine Wahrheit erhebt. Alles menschliche Denken nehmen wir gefangen und unterstellen es Christus, dem es gehorchen muss. 6In diesem Sinn werden wir auch jeden Ungehorsam strafen, aber zuerst müsst ihr als Gemeinde zum Gehorsam bereit sein.
7Seht doch den Tatsachen ins Auge! Ist jemand davon überzeugt, zu Christus zu gehören, dann soll er uns das nicht absprechen. 8Immerhin könnte ich noch für mich in Anspruch nehmen, dass Gott mir als Apostel besondere Vollmacht gegeben hat. Damit würde ich nicht einmal übertreiben und mich lächerlich machen.
Doch mein Auftrag ist, euch zu helfen, nicht euch zu schaden. 9Ihr sollt nicht denken, ich wollte euch mit meinen Briefen einschüchtern. 10Das könnte man fast annehmen, schließlich sagen manche von euch: »In seinen Briefen gebraucht er große Worte, doch wenn er dann vor uns steht, ist er ängstlich und zaghaft. Und wen beeindruckt schon, was er sagt?« 11Wer das von mir behauptet, der soll wissen: Genauso wie ich in meinen Briefen mit euch rede, werde ich handeln, wenn ich bei euch bin.
12Wir würden es natürlich niemals wagen, uns mit denen zu vergleichen, die sich überall selbst empfehlen, oder uns gar auf eine Stufe mit ihnen zu stellen. Wie unverständig sie doch sind! Sie richten ihre eigenen Maßstäbe auf, um sich dann selbst daran zu messen. 13Wir dagegen überschätzen uns nicht so maßlos. Wir möchten ausschließlich mit Gottes Maß gemessen werden, und dazu gehört auch unsere Arbeit bei euch. 14Wir sind bis zu euch gekommen und haben euch die rettende Botschaft von Christus gebracht; deshalb sind wir auch nicht maßlos, wenn wir uns rühmen. 15Dabei schmücken wir uns keineswegs mit fremden Federn. Wenn ihr erst einmal im Glauben fest und stark geworden seid, hoffen wir sogar, unsere Missionsarbeit noch weiter ausdehnen zu können10,15 Wörtlich: groß zu werden nach unserem Maßstab bis zum Übermaß.. 16Denn wir wollen auch den Menschen die rettende Botschaft bringen, die jenseits eurer Grenzen leben – aber nicht in Gebieten, in denen schon andere diese Botschaft verkündet haben. Sonst würden wir uns ja mit einer Arbeit brüsten, die nicht von uns getan wurde.
17Es heißt doch: »Wenn jemand auf etwas stolz sein will, soll er auf das stolz sein, was Gott für ihn getan hat!«10,17 Vgl. Jeremia 9,22‒23. 18Niemand ist schon deshalb ein bewährter Diener Gottes, weil er sich selbst empfiehlt. Entscheidend ist, dass Gott ihm ein gutes Zeugnis ausstellt.
Paul Speaks Up for His Service to the Church
1Christ is humble and free of pride. Because of this, I make my appeal to you. I, Paul, am the one you call “shy” when I am face to face with you. But when I am away from you, you think I am “bold” toward you. 2I am coming to see you. Please don’t make me be as bold as I expect to be toward some people. They think that I live the way the people of this world live. 3I do live in the world. But I don’t fight my battles the way the people of the world do. 4The weapons I fight with are not the weapons the world uses. In fact, it is just the opposite. My weapons have the power of God to destroy the camps of the enemy. 5I destroy every claim and every reason that keeps people from knowing God. I keep every thought under control in order to make it obey Christ. 6Until you have obeyed completely, I will be ready to punish you every time you don’t obey.
7You are judging only by how things look on the surface. Suppose someone is sure they belong to Christ. Then they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do. 8Do I brag too much about the authority the Lord gave me? If I do, it’s because I want to build you up, not tear you down. And I’m not ashamed of that kind of bragging. 9Don’t think that I’m trying to scare you with my letters. 10Some say, “His letters sound important. They are powerful. But in person he doesn’t seem like much. And what he says doesn’t amount to anything.” 11People like that have a lot to learn. What I say in my letters when I’m away from you, I will do in my actions when I’m with you.
12I don’t dare to compare myself with those who praise themselves. I’m not that kind of person. They measure themselves by themselves. They compare themselves with themselves. When they do that, they are not wise. 13But I won’t brag more than I should. God himself has given me an opportunity for serving. I will only brag about what I have done with that opportunity. This opportunity for serving also includes you. 14I am not going too far in my bragging. I would be going too far if I hadn’t come to where you live. But I did get there with the good news about Christ. 15And I won’t brag about work done by others. If I did, I would be bragging more than I should. As your faith continues to grow, I hope that my work among you will greatly increase. 16Then I will be able to preach the good news in the areas beyond you. I don’t want to brag about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17But, “The one who brags should brag about what the Lord has done.” (Jeremiah 9:24) 18Those who praise themselves are not accepted. Those the Lord praises are accepted.
