Die Versöhnung
1Kaum war Jakob weitergezogen, da sah er auch schon Esau, wie er mit 400 Mann anrückte. Sofort stellte er seine Kinder zu ihren Müttern. 2Die beiden Mägde mit ihren Kindern mussten vorangehen, dahinter kam Lea mit ihren Kindern und ganz zum Schluss Rahel mit Josef. 3Er selbst lief an die Spitze des Zuges und verbeugte sich siebenmal, bis sie seinen Bruder erreicht hatten. 4Der rannte Jakob entgegen, fiel ihm um den Hals und küsste ihn. Beide fingen an zu weinen.
5Dann betrachtete Esau die Frauen und die Kinder. »Wer sind sie?«, fragte er. »Das sind die Kinder, die Gott deinem Diener in seiner Güte geschenkt hat«, antwortete Jakob. 6Die beiden Mägde mit ihren Kindern kamen näher und verbeugten sich vor Esau, 7ebenso Lea mit ihren Kindern und schließlich Rahel mit Josef.
8»Warum hast du mir diese ganzen Herden entgegengeschickt?«, fragte Esau. »Sie sind ein Geschenk für dich, meinen Herrn, damit du dich mit mir versöhnst«, erklärte Jakob. 9Aber Esau erwiderte: »Ach, mein Bruder, ich habe schon selbst genug, behalte es doch!« 10»Nein, bitte nimm mein Geschenk an«, bat Jakob, »als Zeichen, dass du auch mich wieder annimmst. Als ich dir ins Gesicht schaute, war es, als würde ich Gott selbst sehen, so freundlich bist du mir begegnet! 11Mein Geschenk soll ein Segen für dich sein, schlag es doch nicht aus! Denn Gott hat es gut mit mir gemeint, und so habe ich wirklich alles, was ich brauche!«
So drängte Jakob, und Esau gab schließlich nach. 12»Jetzt können wir zusammen weiterziehen«, schlug Esau vor, »ich gehe mit meinen Leuten voraus und zeige euch den Weg.« 13Aber Jakob entgegnete: »Mein Herr, du siehst, dass ich kleine Kinder bei mir habe. Auch bei meinen Herden gibt es viele säugende Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder. Wenn ich die Tiere nur einen Tag überanstrenge, sterben sie! 14Darum ist es besser, wenn du schon vorausziehst und wir später nachkommen. Dann kann ich mich nach dem langsamen Tempo der Kinder und der Jungtiere richten und dich in Seïr wiedertreffen!« 15»Aber ich lasse wenigstens einige meiner Männer zum Schutz bei dir!«, erwiderte Esau. »Nein, das ist nicht nötig!«, wehrte Jakob ab. »Wichtig ist für mich nur, dass du mich wieder angenommen hast!« 16Dann machten sich beide auf den Weg: Esau kehrte nach Seïr zurück, 17aber Jakob folgte ihm nicht, sondern zog nach Sukkot. Dort baute er ein Haus, und für seine Herden fertigte er Hütten an. Darum trägt der Ort den Namen Sukkot (»Hütten«).

18Schließlich kam Jakob wohlbehalten nach Sichem im Land Kanaan. Die lange Reise, die in Mesopotamien begonnen hatte, war nun zu Ende. Vor der Stadt schlug er seine Zelte auf 19und kaufte den Lagerplatz für 100 Silberstücke von der Familie Hamors, des Vaters von Sichem. 20Dort errichtete er einen Altar und nannte ihn »Gott ist Israels Gott«.

16¶ So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir. 17And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.33.17 Succoth: that is, Booths
18¶ And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram; and pitched his tent before the city.33.18 Shechem: Gr.
