Eine Frau für Isaak
1Abraham war mittlerweile sehr alt geworden. Der Herr hatte sein Leben gesegnet und ihm in jeder Hinsicht Gutes getan. 2Eines Tages sagte Abraham zu seinem Hausverwalter, der sein ältester Knecht war: »Als Zeichen des Schwures lege die Hand auf meinen Unterleib 3und schwöre beim Herrn, dem Gott über Himmel und Erde, dass du meinen Sohn Isaak keine Kanaaniterin heiraten lässt! Er soll keine Frau aus dieser Gegend nehmen. 4Geh in meine Heimat und such in meiner Verwandtschaft eine Frau für ihn aus!« 5»Aber was ist, wenn die Frau nicht mitkommen will?«, fragte der Knecht. »Soll ich dann deinen Sohn in das Land zurückbringen, aus dem du damals weggezogen bist?« 6»Auf keinen Fall!«, erwiderte Abraham. 7»Denn der Herr, der Gott des Himmels, hat mir aufgetragen, meine Heimat und mein Elternhaus zu verlassen, und er hat mir versprochen, meinen Nachkommen dieses Land hier zu geben. Er wird seinen Engel vor dir herschicken und dafür sorgen, dass du eine Frau für meinen Sohn findest. 8Wenn die Frau nicht mitkommen will, dann bist du nicht mehr an diesen Schwur gebunden. Niemals aber darfst du Isaak in meine Heimat zurückbringen!«
9Da legte der Knecht seine Hand auf Abrahams Unterleib und schwor ihm, alles zu tun, was Abraham gesagt hatte. 10Er belud zehn Kamele Abrahams mit wertvollen Geschenken und ritt nach Mesopotamien in die Stadt, in der die Familie von Abrahams Bruder Nahor lebte.
11Als er ankam, hielt er an einem Brunnen kurz vor der Stadt und ließ dort die Kamele lagern. Es war gegen Abend – etwa die Zeit, in der die Frauen aus der Stadt kommen, um Wasser zu schöpfen. 12»Ach, Herr, du Gott meines Herrn Abraham«, betete er, »sei gut zu meinem Herrn und erfülle seinen Wunsch! Bitte lass doch meinen Plan gelingen! 13Ich stehe hier am Brunnen, und gleich kommen die Mädchen aus der Stadt, um Wasser zu holen. 14Ich werde eine von ihnen fragen, ob sie mir zu trinken gibt. Wenn sie dann antwortet: ›Natürlich, trink nur; ich will auch deinen Kamelen Wasser geben!‹, dann bin ich überzeugt, dass sie es ist, die du für Isaak ausgesucht hast! So weiß ich, dass du den Wunsch meines Herrn erfüllt hast.«
15-16Kaum hatte er das Gebet zu Ende gesprochen, da kam auch schon ein Mädchen aus der Stadt mit einem Wasserkrug auf der Schulter und füllte ihn am Brunnen. Es war Rebekka, die Tochter Betuëls und Enkelin Milkas, der Frau von Abrahams Bruder Nahor. Sie war sehr schön und unverheiratet; noch hatte kein Mann sie berührt. Als sie die Stufen am Brunnen wieder heraufstieg, 17ging der Knecht rasch auf sie zu und bat sie um einen Schluck Wasser. 18»Natürlich, Herr!«, antwortete sie, nahm sofort den Krug von der Schulter und gab ihm zu trinken. 19Dann sagte sie: »Ich will auch deinen Kamelen Wasser geben, bis sie sich satt getrunken haben.« 20Sie goss das Wasser aus ihrem Krug in die Tränkrinne, lief zum Brunnen und schöpfte so lange, bis alle Kamele genug hatten.
21Schweigend stand der Knecht daneben und beobachtete sie. Er war gespannt, ob der Herr sein Gebet erhört hatte und seine Reise erfolgreich sein würde. 22Als Rebekka die Kamele versorgt hatte, holte er für sie einen wertvollen goldenen Nasenring, der 6 Gramm wog, und zwei goldene Armreife zu je 120 Gramm aus seinem Gepäck.
23»Bitte verrate mir doch: Wer ist dein Vater?«, fragte er. »Und habt ihr in eurem Haus noch Platz für uns zum Übernachten?« 24»Mein Vater ist Betuël, seine Eltern heißen Milka und Nahor«, antwortete sie. 25»Ja, wir haben genug Platz für euch, und Futter für eure Kamele ist auch vorhanden.« 26Da warf sich der Knecht zu Boden und betete: 27»Danke, Herr, du Gott meines Herrn Abraham, danke, dass du bis heute immer so gut zu ihm gewesen bist und all das einhältst, was du ihm versprochen hast! Nun hast du auch noch seinen Wunsch erfüllt und mich direkt zu den Verwandten meines Herrn geführt!«
28Rebekka lief nach Hause zu ihrer Mutter und erzählte allen, was vorgefallen war. 29-30Als ihr Bruder Laban den Ring und die Armreife an seiner Schwester sah und ihre Geschichte hörte, lief er sofort hinaus zum Brunnen.
Der Knecht stand immer noch bei seinen Kamelen. 31Laban rief ihm zu: »Du bist wirklich vom Herrn reich gesegnet! Warum stehst du noch hier draußen? Komm doch mit mir! In unserem Haus habe ich schon alles für dich vorbereitet. Auch für deine Kamele ist genug Platz!« 32Da ging der Knecht mit. Man sattelte die Kamele ab und gab ihnen Stroh und Futter. Den Gästen wurde Wasser gebracht, damit sie sich die Füße waschen konnten.
33Vor dem Abendessen aber sagte der Knecht: »Ich esse erst, wenn ich erzählt habe, warum ich hier bin!« »Einverstanden«, sagte Laban, »erzähl!« 34»Ich bin Abrahams Knecht«, stellte er sich ihnen vor. 35»Der Herr hat meinen Herrn reich beschenkt. Er ist sehr wohlhabend geworden: Ihm gehören Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder, Kamele und Esel, dazu Silber und Gold und viele Diener und Mägde. 36Seine Frau Sara bekam noch im hohen Alter einen Sohn. Dieser wird einmal den ganzen Besitz erben. 37Nun will mein Herr, dass sein Sohn Isaak keine Kanaaniterin zur Frau nimmt aus dem Land, in dem er wohnt. Ich musste ihm schwören, dass ich das nicht zulassen werde. 38Er hat mich hierhergeschickt, um stattdessen aus seiner Verwandtschaft eine Frau zu suchen. 39›Aber was ist, wenn sie nicht mitkommen will?‹, fragte ich ihn. 40›Mach dir keine Sorgen‹, antwortete er, ›denn Gott, der Herr, dem mein Leben gehört, wird dir seinen Engel vorausschicken, so dass dir alles gelingt. Du wirst eine Frau aus dem Haus meines Vaters finden. 41Falls meine Familie ihr nicht erlaubt mitzukommen, dann – und nur dann – bist du von deinem Schwur entbunden!‹ 42Ja, und so kam ich heute zu eurem Brunnen vor der Stadt; dort betete ich: Herr, du Gott meines Herrn Abraham! Wenn du willst, dass ich meinen Auftrag erfolgreich ausführe, dann lass meinen Plan gelingen: 43Ich warte hier am Brunnen. Gleich werden die Mädchen kommen, um Wasser zu schöpfen. Ich werde auf eine von ihnen zugehen und sie bitten, mir einen Schluck Wasser aus ihrem Krug zu geben. 44Wenn sie dann antwortet: ›Natürlich – und auch deinen Kamelen will ich Wasser geben!‹, dann ist sie es, die du für den Sohn meines Herrn ausgesucht hast!
45Kaum hatte ich dies Gebet gesprochen, da kam auch schon Rebekka mit einem Krug auf ihrer Schulter. Sie lief zum Brunnen hinunter und füllte den Krug mit Wasser. ›Bitte gib mir etwas zu trinken!‹, bat ich sie. 46Sofort nahm sie den Krug von ihrer Schulter und sagte: ›Trink, mein Herr – und auch deinen Kamelen will ich Wasser geben!‹ Als sie damit fertig war, 47fragte ich sie nach ihrem Vater. ›Mein Vater ist Betuël‹, antwortete sie, ›seine Eltern heißen Nahor und Milka!‹ Da schenkte ich ihr den goldenen Nasenring und legte ihr die Armreife an. 48Ich warf mich zu Boden und lobte den Gott meines Herrn Abraham, weil er mich direkt zum Bruder meines Herrn gebracht hatte.
Und jetzt bitte ich euch: Gebt eure Rebekka dem Sohn Abrahams zur Frau! 49Wenn mein Herr euer Vertrauen und euer Wohlwollen gefunden hat, dann willigt in diese Heirat ein; wenn ihr aber nicht wollt, sagt es mir nur, dann werde ich weitersehen.«
50Laban und Betuël antworteten: »Das hat der Herr so geführt. Es steht uns nicht zu, etwas dagegen zu sagen – wie er will, so soll es geschehen! 51Hier hast du Rebekka, nimm sie mit nach Kanaan! Sie soll den Sohn deines Herrn heiraten, wie der Herr es bestimmt hat!« 52Als der Knecht das hörte, warf er sich zu Boden und dankte dem Herrn. 53Dann holte er aus den Satteltaschen die mitgebrachten Geschenke hervor. Rebekka gab er Silber- und Goldschmuck und schöne Kleider, und auch ihrem Bruder und ihrer Mutter überreichte er viele wertvolle Geschenke.
54Danach begann das Abendessen. Als die Gäste gegessen und getrunken hatten, legten sie sich schlafen. Am nächsten Morgen sagte der Knecht: »Ich möchte zurück zu meinem Herrn. Mit eurer Erlaubnis wollen wir schon heute aufbrechen.« 55»So plötzlich trennen wir uns nicht gern von Rebekka, lass sie noch zehn Tage bei uns bleiben, dann kann sie mit dir kommen!«, baten ihr Bruder und ihre Mutter. 56Er entgegnete: »Haltet mich nicht auf! Der Herr hat meine Reise gelingen lassen, und jetzt möchte ich so schnell wie möglich zu meinem Herrn zurück!« 57»Am besten, sie entscheidet selbst«, sagten die beiden.
58Sie riefen Rebekka herbei und fragten: »Bist du einverstanden, heute schon mit diesem Mann fortzuziehen?« »Ja, das bin ich!«, antwortete sie. 59Da willigten sie ein und ließen Rebekka gehen. Der Knecht, seine Leute, Rebekka und ihr früheres Kindermädchen machten sich für die Reise fertig. 60Der Bruder und die Mutter verabschiedeten sich von ihr mit einem Segenswunsch: »Unsere Schwester, du sollst die Stammmutter eines großen und mächtigen Volkes werden! Mögen deine Nachkommen alle ihre Feinde besiegen!« 61Danach bestiegen Rebekka und ihre Dienerinnen die Kamele und machten sich mit Abrahams Knecht auf den Weg.
62Isaak wohnte zu der Zeit im Süden des Landes. Er kam gerade zurück von dem Brunnen, der den Namen »Brunnen des Lebendigen, der mich sieht« trägt, 63und machte abends noch einen Spaziergang, um nachzudenken und zu beten24,63 So nach den alten Übersetzungen und der jüdischen Auslegung. Die Bedeutung des hebräischen Wortes ist unsicher.. Da sah er auf einmal Kamele kommen. 64Auch Rebekka hatte Isaak entdeckt. Schnell sprang sie vom Kamel herunter und fragte den Knecht: 65»Wer ist dieser Mann, der uns da entgegenkommt?« »Er ist der Sohn meines Herrn«,24,65 Wörtlich: Er ist mein Herr. antwortete er. Da verhüllte sie ihr Gesicht mit dem Schleier.
66Der Knecht erzählte Isaak vom Verlauf der Reise. 67Isaak brachte Rebekka in das Zelt, in dem seine Mutter gelebt hatte. Er nahm sie zur Frau und gewann sie sehr lieb. So wurde er über den Verlust seiner Mutter getröstet.

7¶ The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. 8And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again. 9And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.
10¶ And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.24.10 for: or, and 11And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.24.11 that…: Heb. that women who draw water go forth 12And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. 13Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: 14And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
15¶ And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. 16And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.24.16 very…: Heb. good of countenance 17And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. 18And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. 19And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. 20And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. 21And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. 22And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;24.22 earring: or, jewel for the forehead 23And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in? 24And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. 25She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. 26And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD. 27And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren. 28And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother’s house these things.
29¶ And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. 30And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. 31And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
32¶ And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men’s feet that were with him. 33And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on. 34And he said, I am Abraham’s servant. 35And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. 36And Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. 37And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell: 38But thou shalt go unto my father’s house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son. 39And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me. 40And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house: 41Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath. 42And I came this day unto the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go: 43Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink; 44And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master’s son. 45And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee. 46And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also. 47And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. 48And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son. 49And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. 50Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. 51Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD hath spoken. 52And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth. 53And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.24.53 jewels: Heb. vessels
54And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. 55And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.24.55 a few…: or, a full year, or ten months 56And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. 57And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth. 58And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. 59And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant, and his men. 60And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.
61¶ And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
62And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the south country. 63And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.24.63 to meditate: or, to pray 64And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 65For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. 66And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 67And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
