Abram setzt sich für Lot ein
1Im Land Kanaan brach Krieg aus: Amrafel, König von Schinar, Arjoch, König von Ellasar, Kedor-Laomer, König von Elam, und Tidal, König von Gojim, 2kämpften gegen Bera, König von Sodom, Birscha, König von Gomorra, Schinab, König von Adma, Schemeber, König von Zebojim, und gegen den König von Bela, das später Zoar hieß.
3Diese zuletzt genannten fünf Stadtkönige hatten sich verbündet und zogen mit ihren Truppen zum Siddim-Tal, wo sich heute das Tote Meer erstreckt. 4Zwölf Jahre lang hatte Kedor-Laomer die Oberherrschaft über sie ausgeübt, aber im dreizehnten Jahr lehnten sie sich gegen ihn auf.
5Jetzt, ein Jahr später, marschierten Kedor-Laomer und seine Verbündeten auf, und der Krieg begann. Zuerst schlugen sie folgende Volksstämme: die Refaïter bei Aschterot-Karnajim, die Susiter bei Ham, die Emiter in der Ebene von Kirjatajim 6und die Horiter im Gebirge Seïr bis nach El-Paran am Rand der Wüste. 7Danach kehrten sie zurück nach En-Mischpat, dem späteren Kadesch. Sie verwüsteten das ganze Gebiet der Amalekiter und auch die Gegend um Hazezon-Tamar, die von den Amoritern bewohnt wurde. 8Doch dann stellten sich ihnen im Siddim-Tal die Heere der abtrünnigen Könige entgegen: der Könige von Sodom, von Gomorra, von Adma, von Zebojim und von Bela, dem späteren Zoar. 9Diese kämpften nun gegen Kedor-Laomer und seine Verbündeten; den vier Großkönigen standen also die Könige von fünf kleinen Städten gegenüber. 10Das Tal war voller Asphaltgruben. Als die Könige von Sodom und Gomorra in die Flucht geschlagen wurden, stürzten sie hinein, die anderen entkamen ins Gebirge. 11Die Sieger plünderten Sodom und Gomorra, sie raubten wertvolle Gegenstände und die Lebensmittelvorräte. 12Auch Lot, den Neffen Abrams, der in Sodom wohnte, verschleppten sie, dazu seinen gesamten Besitz.
13Ein Flüchtling aber konnte sich zu Abram, dem Hebräer, durchschlagen, der zu der Zeit bei den Eichen des Amoriters Mamre wohnte. Mamre und seine Brüder Eschkol und Aner waren mit Abram verbündet. 14Als Abram erfuhr, dass sein Neffe verschleppt worden war, bewaffnete er alle kampferprobten Leute, die in seinem Lager geboren waren – 318 Männer –, und jagte den vier Königen hinterher. Bei Dan im Norden holte er sie ein, 15teilte seine Leute in zwei Gruppen auf und überfiel die Feinde bei Nacht. Er schlug sie in die Flucht und verfolgte sie bis nach Hoba, nördlich von Damaskus. 16Das Erbeutete nahm er ihnen wieder ab, darunter auch das Hab und Gut seines Neffen. Lot selbst, die Frauen und alle anderen Gefangenen konnte er befreien.
Begegnung mit dem König von Salem
17Als Abram von seiner siegreichen Schlacht gegen Kedor-Laomer und dessen Verbündete zurückkehrte, zog ihm der König von Sodom ins Schawetal entgegen, das jetzt Königstal genannt wird. 18Ebenso kam Melchisedek, der König von Salem14,18 Vermutlich alter Name für Jerusalem., dorthin und brachte Brot und Wein mit. Er war Priester des höchsten Gottes. 19Melchisedek sagte zu Abram: »Der höchste Gott, der Himmel und Erde geschaffen hat, schenke dir seinen Segen, Abram! 20Gepriesen sei der höchste Gott, denn er ließ dich über deine Feinde triumphieren.« Da gab Abram Melchisedek den zehnten Teil von allen Gütern, die er den Königen abgenommen hatte.
21Der König von Sodom bat Abram: »Gib mir nur meine Leute zurück – alles andere kannst du behalten!« 22Abram entgegnete ihm: »Ich schwöre bei dem Herrn, dem höchsten Gott, der Himmel und Erde geschaffen hat: 23Nicht einmal einen Faden oder Schuhriemen behalte ich von dem, was dir gehört! Du sollst niemals sagen können: ›Ich habe Abram reich gemacht!‹ 24Nur was meine Männer verzehrt haben, gebe ich dir nicht zurück. Außerdem sollen meine Verbündeten Aner, Eschkol und Mamre ihren Beuteanteil bekommen. Ich aber will nichts davon!«
Abram Saves Lot
1Amraphel was the king of Babylon. Arioch was the king of Ellasar. Kedorlaomer was the king of Elam. And Tidal was the king of Goyim. 2They went to war against five other kings. They were Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela. Bela was also called Zoar. 3These five kings all gathered their armies together in the Valley of Siddim. It was also called the valley of the Dead Sea. 4For 12 years Kedorlaomer had ruled over them. But in the 13th year they opposed him.
5So in the 14th year, Kedorlaomer and the kings who helped him went to war. They won the battle against the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim. They also won the battle against the Zuzites in Ham and the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim. 6They did the same thing to the Horites in the hill country of Seir. They marched all the way to El Paran near the desert. 7Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat. En Mishpat was also called Kadesh. They took over the whole territory of the Amalekites. They also won the battle against the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar.
8Then the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboyim and Bela marched out. Bela was also called Zoar. They lined up their armies for battle in the Valley of Siddim. 9They got ready to fight against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Babylonia, and Arioch king of Ellasar. There were four kings against five. 10The Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits. The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah ran away from the battle. Some of their men fell into the pits, but the rest escaped to the hills. 11The four kings took all the things that belonged to Sodom and Gomorrah. They also took all their food and then left. 12They carried away Abram’s nephew Lot and the things he owned. Lot was living in Sodom at that time.
13A man escaped and came to report everything to Abram. Abram was a Hebrew. He was living near the large trees of Mamre the Amorite. Mamre was a brother of Eshkol and Aner. All of them helped Abram. 14Abram heard that Lot had been captured. So he called out his 318 trained men. All of them were sons of his servants. Abram and his men chased their enemies as far as Dan. 15During the night Abram separated his men into groups. They attacked their enemies and drove them away. They chased them north of Damascus as far as Hobah. 16Abram took back everything the kings had taken. He brought back his nephew Lot and the things Lot owned. He also brought back the women and the other people.
17After Abram won the battle over Kedorlaomer and the kings who helped him, he returned home. The king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh. It was also called the King’s Valley.
18Melchizedek was the king of Jerusalem. He brought out bread and wine. He was the priest of the Most High God. 19He gave a blessing to Abram. He said,
“May the Most High God bless Abram.
May the Creator of heaven and earth bless him.
20Give praise to the Most High God.
He gave your enemies into your hand.”
Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything.
21The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people. Keep everything else for yourself.”
22But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to make a promise to the Lord. He is the Most High God. He is the Creator of heaven and earth. 23I’ve said I will not accept anything that belongs to you. I will not take even a thread or the strap of a sandal. You will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24I’ll accept only what my men have eaten and what belongs to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. These three men went with me. Let them have their share.”
