1Dayon naglakat si Jose kag nagkadto sa hari sang Egipto47:1 hari sang Egipto: sa Hebreo, Faraon. Amo man sa masunod nga mga bersikulo. upod ang lima niya ka utod. Nagsiling si Jose sa hari, “Nag-abot na ang akon amay kag mga utod halin sa Canaan, kag dala nila ang ila mga kasapatan kag ang tanan nila nga pagkabutang. Didto sila subong sa Goshen.” 2Ginpakilala niya dayon sa hari ang lima niya ka utod. 3Ginpamangkot sila sang hari, “Ano ang inyo trabaho?” Nagsabat sila, “Mga manugbantay kami sang sapat, pareho sa amon mga ginikanan. 4Nagkadto kami diri agod diri lang anay mag-estar tungod kay puwerte gid ang gutom sa Canaan, kag wala na sing mahalab ang amon mga kasapatan. Nagapangabay kami sa imo nga kon mahimo tugutan mo kami nga mag-estar sa Goshen.”
5Nagsiling ang hari kay Jose, “Karon nga nag-abot na ang imo amay kag mga utod, 6bukas ang Egipto para sa imo pamilya. Paestara sila sa Goshen, nga isa ka maayo nga duta sa Egipto. Kon may nahibaluan ka sa ila nga masaligan, himua sila nga manugbantay sang akon mga kasapatan.”
7Gindala ni Jose ang iya amay sa hari kag ginpakilala. Pagkatapos bendisyon47:7 bendisyon: ukon, pangamusta. ni Jacob sa hari, 8ginpamangkot siya sang hari, “Pila na ang imo edad?” 9Nagsabat siya, “130 na ka tuig. 11Suno sa sugo sang hari, ginpaestar ni Jose ang iya amay kag mga utod sa Egipto; ginhatag niya sa ila ang lugar sang Rameses,47:11 Rameses: ukon, Goshen. nga isa ka maayo nga duta sa Egipto. 12Ginsustentuhan ni Jose sang pagkaon ang iya amay, mga utod, kag ang bug-os nga panimalay sang iya amay, suno sa kadamuon sang ila kabataan.
13Karon, puwerte na gid ang gutom, gani wala na sang pagkaon bisan diin nga lugar. Nagluya na ang mga tawo sa Egipto kag sa Canaan tungod sa gutom. 14Gintipon ni Jose ang tanan nga kuwarta nga ginbayad sang mga taga-Egipto kag taga-Canaan sa pagkaon nga ila ginbakal, kag gindala niya ini sa palasyo sang hari. 15Nag-abot ang tiyempo nga naubos na ang kuwarta sang taga-Egipto kag taga-Canaan. Nagkadto ang mga taga-Egipto kay Jose kag nagsiling, “Wala na kami sang kuwarta. Tagai na lang kami sang pagkaon kay daw mapatay na kami sa gutom.” 16Nagsiling si Jose, “Kon wala na gid man kamo sang kuwarta, dal-a ninyo diri ang inyo mga sapat kag amo ang ibayad ninyo sa pagkaon.” 17Gani gindala nila kay Jose ang ila mga kabayo, karnero, baka, kag asno, kag ginbaylo sa pagkaon. Sa bug-os nga tuig, ginsustentuhan sila ni Jose sang pagkaon sa baylo sang ila mga sapat.
18Pagkaligad sang isa ka tuig, nagkadto naman ang mga tawo kay Jose kag nagsiling, “Indi lipod sa imo nga wala na kami sing kuwarta kag ang amon mga kasapatan ara na sa imo. Wala na gid sing may nabilin sa amon, luwas sa amon kaugalingon kag mga duta. 19Gani buligi man kami nga indi kami mapatay kag indi mapabay-an ang amon mga duta. Sugot kami nga mangin ulipon sang hari kag mangin iya ang amon mga duta para lang may pagkaon kami. Tagai kami dayon sang mga binhi nga matanom agod indi kami mapatay kag agod indi mapabay-an ang amon mga duta.” 20Gani ginbaligya sang tanan nga taga-Egipto ang ila mga duta sa kay Jose tungod puwerte na gid ang gutom. Ginbakal ini tanan ni Jose para sa hari, gani ang ato nga mga duta nangin iya sang hari. 21Ginhimo ni Jose nga ulipon sang hari ang mga tawo sa bug-os nga duta sang Egipto. 22Ang mga duta gid lang sang mga pari ang wala mabakal ni Jose. Indi nila kinahanglan nga ibaligya ang ila mga duta tungod kay ginasustentuhan sila sang hari sang ila pagkaon.
23Nagsiling si Jose sa mga tawo, “Karon nga ginbakal ko na kamo kag ang inyo mga duta para sa hari, ari ang binhi para makatanom kamo. 24Kon mag-ani na gani kamo, ihatag ninyo sa hari ang ikalima nga parte sang inyo patubas. Kag ang nabilin inyo na, para may matanom kamo kag may pagkaon ang inyo bug-os nga panimalay.” 25Nagsiling ang mga tawo, “Sir, maayo ka gid sa amon; ginluwas mo ang amon kabuhi. Sugot kami nga mangin ulipon sang hari.” 26Gani ginhimo ni Jose nga kasuguan sa duta sang Egipto nga ang ikalima nga parte sang patubas para sa hari. Ini nga kasuguan nagapadayon pa hasta subong. Ang mga duta gid lang sang mga pari ang wala ginapanag-iyahan sang hari.
27Didto nag-estar ang mga Israelinhon sa Goshen nga sakop sang Egipto. Nakaangkon sila didto sang duta kag nagdamo pa gid ang ila kabataan. 28Nag-estar si Jacob sa Egipto sang 17 ka tuig; nagkabuhi siya hasta sa edad nga 147 ka tuig. 29Sang nabatyagan niya nga dali na lang siya mapatay, gintawag niya si Jose kag nagsiling sa iya, “Kon mahimo ibutang ang imo kamot sa tunga-tunga sang duha ko ka paa47:29 ibutang… paa: Tan-awa ang footnote sa 24:2. kag magpromisa ka nga ipakita mo ang imo padayon nga kaayo sa akon. Indi mo ako pag-ilubong diri sa Egipto. 30Kon mapatay na ako, ilubong mo ako sa lulubngan sang akon mga katigulangan.” Nagsabat si Jose, “Tumanon ko ang imo ginsiling.” 31Nagsiling dayon si Jacob, “Magsumpa ka sa akon nga tumanon mo gid ini.” Gani nagsumpa si Jose sa iya. Dayon nagluhod si Jacob47:31 Jacob: sa Hebreo, Israel. sa iya hiligdaan sa pagpasalamat sa Dios.
1Joseph went and told Pharaoh, ‘My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen.’ 2He chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.
3Pharaoh asked the brothers, ‘What is your occupation?’
‘Your servants are shepherds,’ they replied to Pharaoh, ‘just as our fathers were.’ 4They also said to him, ‘We have come to live here for a while, because the famine is severe in Canaan and your servants’ flocks have no pasture. So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.’
5Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Your father and your brothers have come to you, 6and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock.’
7Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed47:7 Or greeted Pharaoh, 8Pharaoh asked him, ‘How old are you?’
9And Jacob said to Pharaoh, ‘The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.’ 10Then Jacob blessed47:10 Or said farewell to Pharaoh and went out from his presence.
11So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed. 12Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.
Joseph and the famine
13There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine. 14Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace. 15When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, ‘Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? Our money is all gone.’
16‘Then bring your livestock,’ said Joseph. ‘I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.’ 17So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.
18When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, ‘We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19Why should we perish before your eyes – we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.’
20So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,47:21 Samaritan Pentateuch and Septuagint (see also Vulgate); Masoretic Text and he moved the people into the cities from one end of Egypt to the other. 22However, he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a fixed allowance from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allowance Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.
23Joseph said to the people, ‘Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground. 24But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.’
25‘You have saved our lives,’ they said. ‘May we find favour in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.’
26So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt – still in force today – that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.
27Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.
28Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven. 29When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt, 30but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.’
‘I will do as you say,’ he said.
31‘Swear to me,’ he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshipped as he leaned on the top of his staff.47:31 Or Israel bowed down at the head of his bed
