Juan el Bautista prepara el camino

1En el año quince del reinado de Tiberio César, Poncio Pilato gobernaba la provincia de Judea; Herodes3:1 Es decir, Herodes Antipas, hijo del rey Herodes (1:5). era tetrarca en Galilea; su hermano Felipe, en Iturea y Traconite; y Lisanias, en Abilene; 2el sumo sacerdocio lo ejercían Anás y Caifás. En aquel entonces, la palabra de Dios llegó a Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto. 3Juan recorría toda la región del Jordán predicando el bautismo de arrepentimiento para el perdón de pecados. 4Así está escrito en el libro del profeta Isaías:
«Voz de uno que grita en el desierto:
“Preparad el camino del Señor,
haced derechas sus sendas.
5Todo valle será rellenado,
toda montaña y colina serán allanadas.
Los caminos torcidos se enderezarán,
las sendas escabrosas quedarán llanas.
6Y todo mortal verá la salvación de Dios”».3:6 Is 40:3-5
7Muchos acudían a Juan para que los bautizara.
―¡Camada de víboras! —les advirtió—. ¿Quién os dijo que podríais escapar del castigo que se acerca? 8Producid frutos que demuestren arrepentimiento. Y no os pongáis a pensar: “Tenemos a Abraham por padre”. Porque os digo que aun de estas piedras Dios es capaz de darle hijos a Abraham. 9Es más, el hacha ya está puesta a la raíz de los árboles, y todo árbol que no produzca buen fruto será cortado y arrojado al fuego.
10―¿Entonces qué debemos hacer? —le preguntaba la gente.
11―El que tiene dos camisas debe compartir con el que no tiene ninguna —les contestó Juan—, y el que tiene comida debe hacer lo mismo.
12Llegaron también unos recaudadores de impuestos para que los bautizara.
―Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer nosotros? —le preguntaron.
13―No cobréis más de lo debido —les respondió.
14―Y nosotros, ¿qué debemos hacer? —le preguntaron unos soldados.
―No extorsionéis a nadie ni hagáis denuncias falsas; más bien, conformaos con lo que os pagan.
15La gente estaba a la expectativa, y todos se preguntaban si acaso Juan sería el Cristo.
16―Yo os bautizo con3:16 con. Alt. en. agua —les respondió Juan a todos—. Pero está por llegar uno más poderoso que yo, a quien ni siquiera merezco desatarle la correa de sus sandalias. Él os bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego. 17Tiene el aventador en la mano para limpiar su era y recoger el trigo en su granero; la paja, en cambio, la quemará con fuego que nunca se apagará.
18Y con muchas otras palabras exhortaba Juan a la gente y les anunciaba las buenas nuevas. 19Pero, cuando reprendió al tetrarca Herodes por el asunto de su cuñada Herodías,3:19 Esposa de Felipe, hermano de Herodes Antipas. y por todas las otras maldades que había cometido, 20Herodes llegó hasta el colmo de encerrar a Juan en la cárcel.

21Sucedió que, cuando todos acudían a Juan para que los bautizara, Jesús fue bautizado también. Y, mientras oraba, se abrió el cielo, 22y el Espíritu Santo bajó sobre él en forma de paloma. Entonces se oyó una voz del cielo que decía: «Tú eres mi Hijo amado; estoy muy complacido contigo».
23Jesús tenía unos treinta años cuando comenzó su ministerio. Era hijo, según se creía, de José,

John the Baptist prepares the way
1In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar – when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene – 2during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
“Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6And all people will see God’s salvation.” ’3:6 Isaiah 40:3-5
7John said to the crowds coming out to be baptised by him, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.’
10‘What should we do then?’ the crowd asked.
11John answered, ‘Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.’
12Even tax collectors came to be baptised. ‘Teacher,’ they asked, ‘what should we do?’
13‘Don’t collect any more than you are required to,’ he told them.
14Then some soldiers asked him, ‘And what should we do?’
He replied, ‘Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely – be content with your pay.’
15The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16John answered them all, ‘I baptise you with3:16 Or in water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptise you with3:16 Or in the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’ 18And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20Herod added this to them all: he locked John up in prison.
The baptism and genealogy of Jesus
21When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’
23Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,
