Bendiciones de la obediencia
1»No os hagáis ídolos, ni levantéis imágenes ni piedras sagradas. No coloquéis en vuestro territorio piedras esculpidas ni os inclinéis ante ellas. Yo soy el Señor vuestro Dios.
2»Observad mis sábados y mostrad reverencia por mi santuario. Yo soy el Señor.
3»Si os conducís según mis estatutos y obedecéis fielmente mis mandamientos, 4yo os enviaré lluvia a su tiempo, y la tierra y los árboles del campo darán sus frutos; 5la trilla durará hasta la vendimia, y la vendimia durará hasta la siembra. Comeréis hasta saciaros y viviréis seguros en vuestra tierra.
6»Yo traeré paz al país, y podréis dormir sin ningún temor. Quitaré de la tierra las bestias salvajes, y no habrá guerra en vuestro territorio. 7Perseguiréis a vuestros enemigos, y ante vosotros caerán a filo de espada. 8Cinco de vosotros perseguirán a cien, y cien de vosotros perseguirán a diez mil, y ante vosotros vuestros enemigos caerán a filo de espada.
9»Yo os mostraré mi favor. Yo os haré fecundos. Os multiplicaré, y mantendré mi pacto con vosotros. 10Todavía estaréis comiendo de la cosecha del año anterior cuando tendréis que sacarla para dar lugar a la nueva. 11Estableceré mi morada en medio de vosotros, y no os aborreceré. 12Caminaré entre vosotros. Yo seré vuestro Dios, y vosotros seréis mi pueblo. 13Yo soy el Señor vuestro Dios, que os saqué de Egipto para que dejarais de ser esclavos. Yo rompí las coyundas de vuestro yugo y os hice caminar con la cabeza erguida.
Maldiciones de la desobediencia
14»Si no me obedecéis ni ponéis por obra todos estos mandamientos, 15sino que despreciáis mis estatutos y aborrecéis mis preceptos, y dejáis de poner por obra todos mis mandamientos, violando así mi pacto, 16entonces yo mismo os castigaré con un terror repentino, con enfermedades y con fiebre que os debilitarán, os harán perder la vista y acabarán con vuestra vida. En vano sembraréis vuestra semilla, porque se la comerán vuestros enemigos. 17Yo os negaré mi favor, y vuestros adversarios os derrotarán. Vuestros enemigos os dominarán, y vosotros huiréis sin que nadie os persiga.
18»Si después de todo esto seguís sin obedecerme, siete veces os castigaré por vuestros pecados. 19Yo quebrantaré vuestro orgullo y terquedad. Endureceré el cielo como el hierro y la tierra como el bronce, 20por lo que en vano agotaréis vuestras fuerzas, y ni el suelo ni los árboles del campo os darán sus frutos.
21»Si a pesar de esto seguís oponiéndoos a mí, y os negáis a obedecerme, siete veces os castigaré por vuestros pecados. 22Lanzaré sobre vosotros fieras salvajes, que os arrebatarán vuestros hijos y destruirán vuestro ganado. De tal manera os diezmarán que vuestros caminos quedarán desiertos.
23»Si a pesar de todo esto no aceptáis mi disciplina, sino que continuáis oponiéndoos a mí, 24yo también seguiré oponiéndome a vosotros. Yo mismo os heriré siete veces por vuestros pecados. 25Dejaré caer sobre vosotros la espada de la venganza prescrita en el pacto. Cuando os retiréis a vuestras ciudades, os enviaré una plaga, y caeréis en poder del enemigo. 26Cuando yo destruya vuestros trigales, diez mujeres hornearán para vosotros pan en un solo horno. Y lo distribuiréis racionado, de tal manera que comeréis, pero no os saciaréis.
27»Si a pesar de esto todavía no me obedecéis, sino que continuáis oponiéndoos a mí, 28entonces yo también me pondré definitivamente en contra vuestra. Siete veces os castigaré por vuestros pecados, 29y tendréis que comeros la carne de vuestros hijos y de vuestras hijas. 30Destruiré vuestros santuarios paganos, demoleré vuestros altares de incienso y amontonaré vuestros cadáveres sobre las figuras sin vida de vuestros ídolos. Volcaré mi odio sobre vosotros; 31convertiré en ruinas vuestras ciudades y asolaré vuestros santuarios. No me complaceré más en el aroma de vuestras ofrendas, que me era grato. 32De tal manera asolaré al país, que vuestros enemigos que vengan a ocuparlo quedarán atónitos. 33Os dispersaré entre las naciones: desenvainaré la espada, y os perseguiré hasta dejar desolada vuestra tierra, y en ruinas vuestras ciudades. 34Entonces la tierra disfrutará de sus años sabáticos todo el tiempo que permanezca desolada, mientras vosotros viváis en el país de vuestros enemigos. Así la tierra descansará y disfrutará de sus sábados. 35Mientras la tierra esté desolada, tendrá el descanso que no tuvo durante los años sabáticos en que vosotros la habitasteis.
36»En cuanto a los que sobrevivan, tan profundo será el temor que les infundiré en tierra de sus enemigos que hasta el susurro de una hoja movida por el viento los pondrá en fuga. Correrán como quien huye de la espada, y caerán sin que nadie los persiga. 37Como si huyeran de la espada, tropezarán unos con otros sin que nadie los persiga, y no podréis hacer frente a vuestros enemigos. 38Pereceréis en medio de las naciones; el país de vuestros enemigos os devorará. 39Aquellos de vosotros que sobrevivan serán abatidos en país enemigo, porque a sus pecados se añadirá el de sus padres.
40»Pero, si confiesan su maldad y la maldad de sus padres, y su traición y constante rebeldía contra mí, 41las cuales me han obligado a enviarlos al país de sus enemigos, y si su obstinado corazón se humilla y reconoce su pecado, 42entonces me acordaré de mi pacto con Jacob, Isaac y Abraham, y también me acordaré de la tierra. 43Al abandonar ellos la tierra, esta disfrutará de sus sábados mientras permanezca deshabitada. Pero tendrán que reconocer sus pecados, por cuanto rechazaron mis preceptos y aborrecieron mis estatutos.
44»A pesar de todo, y aunque estén en la tierra de sus enemigos, no los rechazaré ni los aborreceré hasta el punto de exterminarlos, ni romperé tampoco mi pacto con ellos. Yo soy el Señor su Dios. 45Antes bien, recordaré en su favor el pacto que hice con sus antepasados, a quienes, a la vista de las naciones, saqué de Egipto para ser su Dios. Yo soy el Señor».
46Estos son los estatutos, preceptos y leyes que, por medio de Moisés, estableció el Señor en el monte Sinaí entre él y los israelitas.
Reward for obedience
1‘ “Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.
2‘ “Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the Lord.
3‘ “If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, 4I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. 5Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land.
6‘ “I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no-one will make you afraid. I will remove wild beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. 7You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. 8Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.
9‘ “I will look on you with favour and make you fruitful and increase your numbers, and I will keep my covenant with you. 10You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new. 11I will put my dwelling-place26:11 Or my tabernacle among you, and I will not abhor you. 12I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. 13I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high.
Punishment for disobedience
14‘ “But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands, 15and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, 16then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and sap your strength. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it. 17I will set my face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no-one is pursuing you.
18‘ “If after all this you will not listen to me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over. 19I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze. 20Your strength will be spent in vain, because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.
21‘ “If you remain hostile towards me and refuse to listen to me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over, as your sins deserve. 22I will send wild animals against you, and they will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and make you so few in number that your roads will be deserted.
23‘ “If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction but continue to be hostile towards me, 24I myself will be hostile towards you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. 25And I will bring the sword on you to avenge the breaking of the covenant. When you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be given into enemy hands. 26When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women will be able to bake your bread in one oven, and they will dole out the bread by weight. You will eat, but you will not be satisfied.
27‘ “If in spite of this you still do not listen to me but continue to be hostile towards me, 28then in my anger I will be hostile towards you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over. 29You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters. 30I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies26:30 Or your funeral offerings on the lifeless forms of your idols, and I will abhor you. 31I will turn your cities into ruins and lay waste your sanctuaries, and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings. 32I myself will lay waste the land, so that your enemies who live there will be appalled. 33I will scatter you among the nations and will draw out my sword and pursue you. Your land will be laid waste, and your cities will lie in ruins. 34Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate and you are in the country of your enemies; then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. 35All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it.
36‘ “As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a wind-blown leaf will put them to flight. They will run as though fleeing from the sword, and they will fall, even though no-one is pursuing them. 37They will stumble over one another as though fleeing from the sword, even though no-one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand before your enemies. 38You will perish among the nations; the land of your enemies will devour you. 39Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’ sins they will waste away.
40‘ “But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors – their unfaithfulness and their hostility towards me, 41which made me hostile towards them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies – then when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they pay for their sin, 42I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. 43For the land will be deserted by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected my laws and abhorred my decrees. 44Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or abhor them so as to destroy them completely, breaking my covenant with them. I am the Lord their God. 45But for their sake I will remember the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.” ’
46These are the decrees, the laws and the regulations that the Lord established at Mount Sinai between himself and the Israelites through Moses.
