Ciudades de refugio
1El Señor le dijo a Josué: 2«Pídeles a los israelitas que designen algunas ciudades de refugio, tal como te ordené por medio de Moisés. 3Así, cualquier persona que mate a otra accidentalmente o sin premeditación podrá huir a esas ciudades para refugiarse del vengador del delito de sangre.
4»Cuando tal persona huya a una de esas ciudades, se ubicará a la entrada y allí presentará su caso ante los ancianos de la ciudad. Acto seguido, los ancianos lo aceptarán en esa ciudad y le asignarán un lugar para vivir con ellos. 5Si el vengador del delito de sangre persigue a la persona hasta esa ciudad, los ancianos no deberán entregárselo, pues ya habrán aceptado al que mató sin premeditación ni rencor alguno. 6El acusado permanecerá en aquella ciudad hasta haber comparecido ante la asamblea del pueblo y hasta que el sumo sacerdote en funciones haya fallecido. Solo después de esto el acusado podrá regresar a su hogar y al pueblo del cual huyó tiempo atrás».
7En respuesta a la orden de Josué, los israelitas designaron Cedes en Galilea, en la región montañosa de Neftalí; Siquén, en la región montañosa de Efraín, y Quiriat Arbá, conocida como Hebrón, en la región montañosa de Judá. 8Al este del río Jordán,20:8 del río Jordán. Lit. del Jordán de Jericó (uno de los antiguos nombres asignados al río Jordán). escogieron las tres ciudades siguientes: Béser, en el desierto que está en la meseta perteneciente al territorio de la tribu de Rubén; Ramot de Galaad, en el territorio de la tribu de Gad, y Golán de Basán, en el territorio de la tribu de Manasés. 9Todo israelita o inmigrante que hubiera matado accidentalmente a alguien podría huir hacia una de esas ciudades para no morir a mano del vengador del delito de sangre, antes de ser juzgado por la asamblea.
Cities of refuge
1Then the Lord said to Joshua: 2‘Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses, 3so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood. 4When they flee to one of these cities, they are to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state their case before the elders of that city. Then the elders are to admit the fugitive into their city and provide a place to live among them. 5If the avenger of blood comes in pursuit, the elders must not surrender the fugitive, because the fugitive killed their neighbour unintentionally and without malice aforethought. 6They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled.’
7So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah. 8East of the Jordan (on the other side from Jericho) they designated Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh. 9Any of the Israelites or any foreigner residing among them who killed someone accidentally could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
