Primer oráculo: Exhortación a reedificar el templo
1El día primero del mes sexto del segundo año del rey Darío, vino palabra del Señor por medio del profeta Hageo a Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, gobernador de Judá, y al sumo sacerdote Josué hijo de Josadac: 2«Así dice el Señor Todopoderoso: “Este pueblo alega que todavía no es el momento apropiado para ir a reconstruir la casa del Señor”».
3También vino esta palabra del Señor por medio del profeta Hageo:
4«¿Acaso es el momento apropiado
para que vosotros residáis en casas artesonadas
mientras que esta casa está en ruinas?»
5Así dice ahora el Señor Todopoderoso:
«¡Reflexionad sobre vuestro proceder!
6»Sembráis mucho, pero cosecháis poco;
coméis, pero no quedáis satisfechos;
bebéis, pero no llegáis a saciaros;
os vestís, pero no lográis abrigaros;
y al jornalero se le va su salario
como en saco roto».
7Así dice el Señor Todopoderoso:
«¡Reflexionad sobre vuestro proceder!
8»Id a los montes;
traed madera y reconstruid mi casa.
Yo veré su reconstrucción con gusto,
y manifestaré mi gloria
—dice el Señor—.
9»Esperáis mucho,
pero cosecháis poco;
lo que almacenáis en vuestra casa,
yo lo disipo de un soplo.
¿Por qué? ¡Porque mi casa está en ruinas,
mientras vosotros solo os ocupáis de la vuestra!
—afirma el Señor Todopoderoso—.
10»Por eso, por vuestra culpa, los cielos retuvieron el rocío y la tierra se negó a dar sus productos. 11Yo hice venir una sequía sobre los campos y las montañas, sobre el trigo y el vino nuevo, sobre el aceite fresco y el fruto de la tierra, sobre los animales y los hombres, y sobre toda la obra de vuestras manos».
12Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, el sumo sacerdote Josué hijo de Josadac y todo el resto del pueblo obedecieron al Señor su Dios. Acataron las palabras del profeta Hageo, a quien el Señor su Dios había enviado. Y el pueblo sintió temor en la presencia del Señor. 13Entonces Hageo su mensajero comunicó al pueblo el mensaje del Señor: «Yo estoy con vosotros. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo». 14Y el Señor inquietó de tal manera a Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, gobernador de Judá, y al sumo sacerdote Josué hijo de Josadac, y a todo el resto del pueblo, que vinieron y empezaron a trabajar en la casa de su Dios, el Señor Todopoderoso. 15Era el día veinticuatro del mes sexto del segundo año del rey Darío.
A call to build the house of the Lord
1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak,1:1 Hebrew Jehozadak, a variant of Jozadak; also in verses 12 and 14 the high priest:
2This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘These people say, “The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.” ’
3Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 4‘Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your panelled houses, while this house remains a ruin?’
5Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Give careful thought to your ways. 6You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.’
7This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Give careful thought to your ways. 8Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honoured,’ says the Lord. 9‘You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. 10Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labour of your hands.’
12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.
13Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: ‘I am with you,’ declares the Lord. 14So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God, 15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month.
