El cedro del Líbano
1El día primero del mes tercero del año undécimo, el Señor me habló diciendo: 2«Hijo de hombre, dile al faraón y a toda su gente:
»“¿Quién se puede comparar con tu grandeza?
3Fíjate en Asiria,
que alguna vez fue cedro del Líbano,
con bello y frondoso ramaje;
su copa llegaba hasta las nubes.
4Las aguas lo hicieron crecer;
las corrientes profundas lo nutrieron.
Sus ríos corrían en torno a sus raíces;
sus acequias regaban todos los árboles del campo.
5Así el cedro creció
más alto que todos los árboles.
Gracias a las abundantes aguas,
se extendió su frondoso ramaje.
6Todas las aves del cielo
anidaban en sus ramas.
Todas las bestias del campo
parían bajo su follaje.
Todas las naciones
vivían bajo su sombra.
7Era un árbol imponente y majestuoso,
de ramas extendidas;
sus raíces se hundían
hasta las profundas aguas.
8Ningún cedro en el jardín de Dios
se le podía comparar;
ningún pino ostentaba un follaje parecido,
ni tenían sus frondas los castaños.
Ningún árbol del jardín de Dios
se le comparaba en hermosura.
9Yo lo hice bello
y con un ramaje majestuoso.
En el Edén, jardín de Dios,
era la envidia de todos los árboles.
10»”Por eso, así dice el Señor omnipotente: ‘Por cuanto el árbol creció tan alto, y ufano de su altura irguió su copa hasta las nubes, 11yo lo he desechado; lo he dejado en manos de un déspota invasor, para que lo trate según su maldad. 12Los extranjeros más crueles lo han talado, abandonándolo a su suerte. Sus ramas han caído en los montes y en los valles; yacen rotas por todas las cañadas del país. Huyeron y lo abandonaron todas las naciones que buscaban protección bajo su sombra. 13Ahora las aves del cielo se posan sobre su tronco caído, y los animales salvajes se meten entre sus ramas. 14Y esto es para que ningún árbol que esté junto a las aguas vuelva a crecer tanto; para que ningún árbol, por bien regado que esté, vuelva a elevar su copa hasta las nubes. Todos están destinados a la muerte, a bajar a las regiones profundas de la tierra y quedarse entre los mortales que descienden a la fosa.
15»” ’Así dice el Señor omnipotente: El día en que el cedro bajó al abismo, hice que el mar subterráneo se secara en señal de duelo. Detuve sus corrientes, y contuve sus ríos; por él cubrí de luto al Líbano, y todos los árboles del campo se marchitaron. 16Cuando lo hice bajar al abismo, junto con los que descienden a la fosa, con el estruendo de su caída hice temblar a las naciones. Todos los árboles del Edén, los más selectos y hermosos del Líbano, los que estaban mejor regados, se consolaron en las regiones subterráneas. 17Sus aliados entre las naciones que buscaban protección bajo su sombra también descendieron con él al abismo, junto con los que habían muerto a filo de espada. 18Ningún árbol del Edén se le podía comparar en grandeza y majestad. No obstante, también él descendió con los árboles del Edén a las regiones subterráneas. Allí quedó tendido en medio de los paganos, junto con los que murieron a filo de espada. ¡Y así será la muerte del faraón y de todos sus súbditos! Lo afirma el Señor omnipotente’ ”».
Pharaoh as a felled cedar of Lebanon
1In the eleventh year, in the third month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me: 2‘Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his hordes:
‘ “Who can be compared with you in majesty?
3Consider Assyria, once a cedar in Lebanon,
with beautiful branches overshadowing the forest;
it towered on high,
its top above the thick foliage.
4The waters nourished it,
deep springs made it grow tall;
their streams flowed
all around its base
and sent their channels
to all the trees of the field.
5So it towered higher
than all the trees of the field;
its boughs increased
and its branches grew long,
spreading because of abundant waters.
6All the birds of the sky
nested in its boughs,
all the wild animals
gave birth under its branches;
all the great nations
lived in its shade.
7It was majestic in beauty,
with its spreading boughs,
for its roots went down
to abundant waters.
8The cedars in the garden of God
could not rival it,
nor could the junipers
equal its boughs,
nor could the plane trees
compare with its branches –
no tree in the garden of God
could match its beauty.
9I made it beautiful
with abundant branches,
the envy of all the trees of Eden
in the garden of God.
10‘ “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: because the great cedar towered over the thick foliage, and because it was proud of its height, 11I gave it into the hands of the ruler of the nations, for him to deal with according to its wickedness. I cast it aside, 12and the most ruthless of foreign nations cut it down and left it. Its boughs fell on the mountains and in all the valleys; its branches lay broken in all the ravines of the land. All the nations of the earth came out from under its shade and left it. 13All the birds settled on the fallen tree, and all the wild animals lived among its branches. 14Therefore no other trees by the waters are ever to tower proudly on high, lifting their tops above the thick foliage. No other trees so well-watered are ever to reach such a height; they are all destined for death, for the earth below, among mortals who go down to the realm of the dead.
15‘ “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: on the day it was brought down to the realm of the dead I covered the deep springs with mourning for it; I held back its streams, and its abundant waters were restrained. Because of it I clothed Lebanon with gloom, and all the trees of the field withered away. 16I made the nations tremble at the sound of its fall when I brought it down to the realm of the dead to be with those who go down to the pit. Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, the well-watered trees, were consoled in the earth below. 17They too, like the great cedar, had gone down to the realm of the dead, to those killed by the sword, along with the armed men who lived in its shade among the nations.
18‘ “Which of the trees of Eden can be compared with you in splendour and majesty? Yet you, too, will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth below; you will lie among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.
‘ “This is Pharaoh and all his hordes, declares the Sovereign Lord.” ’
