La nueva Jerusalén
1Después vi un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva, porque el primer cielo y la primera tierra habían dejado de existir, lo mismo que el mar. 2Vi además la ciudad santa, la nueva Jerusalén, que bajaba del cielo, procedente de Dios, preparada como una novia hermosamente vestida para su prometido. 3Oí una potente voz que provenía del trono y decía: «¡Aquí, entre los seres humanos, está la morada de Dios! Él acampará en medio de ellos, y ellos serán su pueblo; Dios mismo estará con ellos y será su Dios. 4Él les enjugará toda lágrima de los ojos. Ya no habrá muerte, ni llanto, ni lamento ni dolor, porque las primeras cosas han dejado de existir».
5El que estaba sentado en el trono dijo: «¡Yo hago nuevas todas las cosas!» Y añadió: «Escribe, porque estas palabras son verdaderas y dignas de confianza».
6También me dijo: «Ya todo está hecho. Yo soy el Alfa y la Omega, el Principio y el Fin. Al que tenga sed le daré a beber gratuitamente de la fuente del agua de la vida. 7El que salga vencedor heredará todo esto, y yo seré su Dios y él será mi hijo. 8Pero los cobardes, los incrédulos, los abominables, los asesinos, los que cometen inmoralidades sexuales, los que practican artes mágicas, los idólatras y todos los mentirosos recibirán como herencia el lago de fuego y azufre. Esta es la segunda muerte».
9Se acercó uno de los siete ángeles que tenían las siete copas llenas con las últimas siete plagas. Me habló así: «Ven, que te voy a presentar a la novia, la esposa del Cordero». 10Me llevó en el Espíritu a una montaña grande y elevada, y me mostró la ciudad santa, Jerusalén, que bajaba del cielo, procedente de Dios. 11Resplandecía con la gloria de Dios, y su brillo era como el de una piedra preciosa, semejante a una piedra de jaspe transparente. 12Tenía una muralla grande y alta, y doce puertas custodiadas por doce ángeles, en las que estaban escritos los nombres de las doce tribus de Israel. 13Tres puertas daban al este, tres al norte, tres al sur y tres al oeste. 14La muralla de la ciudad tenía doce cimientos, en los que estaban los nombres de los doce apóstoles del Cordero.
15El ángel que hablaba conmigo llevaba una caña de oro para medir la ciudad, sus puertas y su muralla. 16La ciudad era cuadrada; medía lo mismo de largo que de ancho. El ángel midió la ciudad con la caña, y tenía dos mil doscientos kilómetros:21:16 dos mil doscientos kilómetros. Lit. doce mil estadios. su longitud, su anchura y su altura eran iguales. 17Midió también la muralla, y tenía sesenta y cinco metros,21:17 sesenta y cinco metros. Lit. ciento cuarenta y cuatro codos. según las medidas humanas que el ángel empleaba. 18La muralla estaba hecha de jaspe, y la ciudad era de oro puro, semejante a cristal pulido. 19Los cimientos de la muralla de la ciudad estaban decorados con toda clase de piedras preciosas: el primero con jaspe, el segundo con zafiro, el tercero con ágata, el cuarto con esmeralda, 20el quinto con ónice, el sexto con cornalina, el séptimo con crisólito, el octavo con berilo, el noveno con topacio, el décimo con crisoprasa, el undécimo con jacinto y el duodécimo con amatista.21:20 No se sabe con certeza la identificación precisa de algunas de estas piedras. 21Las doce puertas eran doce perlas, y cada puerta estaba hecha de una sola perla. La calle21:21 calle. Alt. plaza. principal de la ciudad era de oro puro, como cristal transparente.
22No vi ningún templo en la ciudad, porque el Señor Dios Todopoderoso y el Cordero son su templo. 23La ciudad no necesita ni sol ni luna que la alumbren, porque la gloria de Dios la ilumina, y el Cordero es su lumbrera. 24Las naciones caminarán a la luz de la ciudad, y los reyes de la tierra le entregarán sus espléndidas riquezas.21:24 entregarán … riquezas. Lit. llevarán su gloria. 25Sus puertas estarán abiertas todo el día, pues allí no habrá noche. 26Y llevarán a ella todas las riquezas21:26 todas las riquezas. Lit. la gloria. y el honor de las naciones. 27Nunca entrará en ella nada impuro, ni los idólatras ni los farsantes, sino solo aquellos que tienen su nombre escrito en el libro de la vida, el libro del Cordero.
A new heaven and a new earth
1Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’21:1 Isaiah 65:17 for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death”21:4 Isaiah 25:8 or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’
5He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’
6He said to me: ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practise magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death.’
The new Jerusalem, the bride of the Lamb
9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, ‘Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.’ 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. 16The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia21:16 That is, about 2,200 kilometres in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits21:17 That is, about 65 metres thick.21:17 Or high 18The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. 19The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.21:20 The precise identification of some of these precious stones is uncertain. 21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.
22I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendour into it. 25On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26The glory and honour of the nations will be brought into it. 27Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
