10:1-11 – 1R 12:1-24
1Roboán fue a Siquén porque todos los israelitas se habían reunido allí para proclamarlo rey. 2De esto se enteró Jeroboán hijo de Nabat, así que volvió de Egipto, que es adonde había huido del rey Salomón. 3Cuando lo mandaron a buscar, él y todo Israel fueron a ver a Roboán y le dijeron:
4―Tu padre nos impuso un yugo pesado. Alívianos tú ahora el duro trabajo y el pesado yugo que él nos echó encima; así te serviremos.
5―Idos por ahora —respondió Roboán—, pero volved a verme dentro de tres días.
Cuando el pueblo se fue, 6el rey Roboán consultó con los ancianos que en vida de su padre Salomón habían estado a su servicio.
―¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros que le responda a este pueblo? —preguntó.
7Ellos respondieron:
―Si tratas con bondad a este pueblo, y condesciendes con ellos y les respondes con amabilidad, ellos te servirán para siempre.
8Pero Roboán rechazó el consejo que le dieron los ancianos, y consultó a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y que estaban a su servicio.
9―¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros? —les preguntó—. ¿Cómo debo responderle a este pueblo que me dice: “Alívianos el yugo que tu padre nos echó encima”?
10Aquellos jóvenes, que se habían criado con él, le contestaron:
―El pueblo te ha dicho: “Tu padre nos impuso un yugo pesado; hazlo tú más ligero”. Pues bien, respóndeles de este modo: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre. 11Si él os impuso un yugo pesado, ¡yo os aumentaré la carga! Y, si él os castigaba con una vara, ¡yo lo haré con un látigo!”10:11 con una vara … con un látigo. Lit. con azotes … con escorpiones; también en v. 14.
12Al tercer día, en la fecha que el rey Roboán había indicado, Jeroboán regresó con todo el pueblo para presentarse ante él. 13Pero el rey Roboán les respondió con brusquedad: rechazó el consejo de los ancianos 14y siguió más bien el de los jóvenes. Les dijo: «Si mi padre os impuso10:14 Si mi padre os impuso (mss. hebreos y versiones antiguas); Yo os impondré (TM). un yugo pesado; ¡yo os aumentaré la carga! Si él os castigaba con una vara, ¡yo lo haré con un látigo!»
15Y, como el rey no escuchó al pueblo, las cosas tomaron este rumbo por voluntad de Dios. Así se cumplió la palabra que el Señor le había comunicado a Jeroboán hijo de Nabat por medio de Ahías el silonita.
16Cuando se dieron cuenta de que el rey10:16 Cuando se dieron cuenta de que el rey (mss. hebreos y versiones antiguas); Como el rey (TM). no iba a hacerles caso, todos los israelitas exclamaron a una:
«¡Pueblo de Israel, todos a vuestras casas!
¡Y tú, David, ocúpate de los tuyos!
¿Qué parte tenemos con David?
¿Qué herencia tenemos con el hijo de Isaí?»
Así que se fueron, cada uno a su casa. 17Sin embargo, Roboán siguió reinando sobre los israelitas que vivían en las ciudades de Judá. 18Más tarde, el rey Roboán envió a Adonirán10:18 Adonirán. Lit. Adorán (variante de este nombre). para que supervisara el trabajo forzado, pero los israelitas lo mataron a pedradas. ¡A duras penas logró el rey subir a su carro y escapar a Jerusalén! 19Desde entonces Israel ha estado en rebelión contra la familia de David.
Israel rebels against Rehoboam
1Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king. 2When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. 3So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labour and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.’
5Rehoboam answered, ‘Come back to me in three days.’ So the people went away.
6Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. ‘How would you advise me to answer these people?’ he asked.
7They replied, ‘If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favourable answer, they will always be your servants.’
8But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. 9He asked them, ‘What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, “Lighten the yoke your father put on us”?’
10The young men who had grown up with him replied, ‘The people have said to you, “Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.” Now tell them, “My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” ’
12Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, ‘Come back to me in three days.’ 13The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, 14he followed the advice of the young men and said, ‘My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’ 15So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfil the word that the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
16When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
‘What share do we have in David,
what part in Jesse’s son?
To your tents, Israel!
Look after your own house, David!’
So all the Israelites went home. 17But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,10:18 Hebrew Hadoram, a variant of Adoniram who was in charge of forced labour, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. 19So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
