Discurso de despedida de Samuel
1Samuel le habló a todo Israel:
―¡Prestadme atención! Yo os he hecho caso en todo lo que me habéis pedido, y os he dado un rey que os gobierne. 2Ya tenéis al rey que va a dirigiros. En cuanto a mí, ya soy viejo y lleno de canas, y mis hijos son parte del pueblo. Yo os he guiado a vosotros desde mi juventud hasta la fecha. 3Aquí me tenéis. Podéis acusarme en la presencia del Señor y de su ungido. ¿A quién le he robado un buey o un asno? ¿A quién he defraudado? ¿A quién he oprimido? ¿Por quién me he dejado sobornar? Acusadme, y pagaré lo que corresponda.
4―No nos has defraudado —respondieron—; tampoco nos has oprimido ni le has robado nada a nadie.
5Samuel insistió:
―¡Que el Señor y su ungido sean hoy testigos de que no me habéis hallado culpable de nada!
―¡Que lo sean! —fue la respuesta del pueblo.
6Además Samuel les dijo:
―Testigo es el Señor, que escogió a Moisés y a Aarón para sacar de Egipto a vuestros antepasados. 7Y ahora, prestadme atención. El Señor os ha colmado de beneficios a vosotros y a vuestros antepasados, pero yo tengo una querella contra vosotros ante el Señor.
8»Después de que Jacob entró en Egipto, sus descendientes clamaron al Señor. Entonces el Señor envió a Moisés y a Aarón para sacarlos de Egipto y establecerlos en este lugar. 9Pero, como se olvidaron de su Señor y Dios, él los entregó al poder de Sísara, comandante del ejército de Jazor, y al poder de los filisteos y del rey de Moab, y ellos les hicieron la guerra. 10Por eso vosotros clamasteis al Señor: “Hemos pecado al abandonar al Señor y adorar a los ídolos de Baal y a las imágenes de Astarté. Pero ahora, si nos libras del poder de nuestros enemigos, solo a ti te serviremos”. 11Entonces el Señor envió a Yerubaal, Barac,12:11 Barac (mss. de LXX y Siríaca); Bedán (TM). Jefté y Samuel, y os libró del poder de los enemigos que os rodeaban, para que vivierais seguros.
12»No obstante, cuando visteis que Najás, rey de los amonitas, os amenazaba, me dijisteis: “¡No! ¡Queremos que nos gobierne un rey!” Y esto, a pesar de que el Señor vuestro Dios es vuestro rey. 13Pues bien, aquí tenéis al rey que pedisteis y que habéis escogido. Pero tened en cuenta que es el Señor quien os ha dado ese rey. 14Si vosotros y el rey que os gobierne teméis al Señor vuestro Dios, y le servís y le obedecéis, acatando sus mandatos y manteniéndoos fieles a él, ¡magnífico! 15En cambio, si le desobedecéis y no acatáis sus mandatos, él descargará su mano sobre vosotros como la descargó contra vuestros antepasados.
16»Y ahora, prestadme atención y observad con vuestros propios ojos algo grandioso que el Señor va a hacer. 17Ahora no es tiempo de lluvias, sino de cosecha.12:17 Ahora no es … de cosecha. Lit. ¿Acaso no es la cosecha de trigo? Sin embargo, voy a invocar al Señor, y él enviará truenos y lluvia; así os daréis cuenta de la gran maldad que habéis cometido ante el Señor al pedir un rey».
18Samuel invocó al Señor, y ese mismo día el Señor mandó truenos y lluvia. Todo el pueblo sintió un gran temor ante el Señor y ante Samuel, 19y le dijeron a Samuel:
―Ora al Señor tu Dios por nosotros, tus siervos, para que no nos quite la vida. A todos nuestros pecados hemos añadido la maldad de pedirle un rey.
20―No temáis —replicó Samuel—. Aunque vosotros habéis cometido una gran maldad, no os apartéis del Señor; más bien, servidle de todo corazón. 21No os alejéis de él por seguir a ídolos inútiles, que no os pueden ayudar ni rescatar, pues no sirven para nada. 22Por amor a su gran nombre, el Señor no rechazará a su pueblo; de hecho, él se ha dignado a haceros a vosotros su propio pueblo. 23En cuanto a mí, que el Señor me libre de pecar contra él dejando de orar por vosotros. Yo seguiré enseñándoos el camino bueno y recto. 24Pero os exhorto a temer al Señor y a servirle fielmente y de todo corazón, recordando los grandes beneficios que él ha hecho en vuestro favor. 25Si persistís en la maldad, tanto vosotros como vuestro rey seréis destruidos.
1And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you. 2And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day. 3Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.12.3 bribe: Heb. ransom12.3 to blind…: or, that I should hide mine eyes at him 4And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand. 5And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.
6¶ And Samuel said unto the people, It is the LORD that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.12.6 advanced: or, made 7Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.12.7 righteous…: Heb. righteousnesses, or, benefits12.7 to: Heb. with 8When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place. 9And when they forgat the LORD their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them. 10And they cried unto the LORD, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee. 11And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe. 12And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king. 13Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you. 14If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God:12.14 commandment: Heb. mouth12.14 continue…: Heb. be after 15But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.
16¶ Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes. 17Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the LORD, and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king. 18So Samuel called unto the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel. 19And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.
20¶ And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart; 21And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain. 22For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people. 23Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:12.23 in: Heb. from 24Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.12.24 how…: or, what a great thing 25But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.
