Ratificación del pacto
1También le dijo el Señor a Moisés: «Sube al monte a verme, junto con Aarón, Nadab y Abiú, y setenta de los ancianos de Israel. Ellos podrán arrodillarse a cierta distancia, 2pero solo tú, Moisés, podrás acercarte a mí. El resto del pueblo no deberá acercarse ni subir contigo».
3Moisés fue y refirió al pueblo todas las palabras y disposiciones del Señor, y ellos respondieron a una voz: «Haremos todo lo que el Señor ha dicho». 4Moisés puso entonces por escrito lo que el Señor había dicho.
A la mañana siguiente, madrugó y levantó un altar al pie del monte, y en representación de las doce tribus de Israel consagró doce piedras. 5Luego envió a unos jóvenes israelitas para que ofrecieran al Señor novillos como holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión. 6La mitad de la sangre la echó Moisés en unos tazones, y la otra mitad la roció sobre el altar. 7Después tomó el libro del pacto y lo leyó ante el pueblo, y ellos respondieron:
―Haremos todo lo que el Señor ha dicho, y le obedeceremos.
8Moisés tomó la sangre, roció al pueblo con ella y dijo:
―Esta es la sangre del pacto que, con base en estas palabras, el Señor ha hecho con vosotros.
9Moisés y Aarón, Nadab y Abiú, y los setenta ancianos de Israel subieron 10y vieron al Dios de Israel. Bajo sus pies había una especie de pavimento de zafiro, tan claro como el cielo mismo. 11Y a pesar de que estos jefes de los israelitas vieron a Dios, siguieron con vida,24:11 siguieron con vida. Lit. comieron y bebieron. pues Dios no alzó su mano contra ellos.
12El Señor le dijo a Moisés: «Sube a encontrarte conmigo en el monte, y quédate allí. Voy a darte las tablas con la ley y los mandamientos que he escrito para guiarlos en la vida».
13Moisés subió al monte de Dios, acompañado por su asistente Josué, 14pero a los ancianos les dijo: «Esperad aquí hasta que volvamos. Aarón y Jur se quedarán aquí con vosotros. Si alguno tiene un problema, que acuda a ellos».
15En cuanto Moisés subió, una nube cubrió el monte, 16y la gloria del Señor se posó sobre el Sinaí. Seis días la nube cubrió el monte. Al séptimo día, desde el interior de la nube, el Señor llamó a Moisés. 17A los ojos de los israelitas, la gloria del Señor en la cumbre del monte parecía un fuego consumidor. 18Moisés se internó en la nube y subió al monte, y allí permaneció cuarenta días y cuarenta noches.
The Blood of the Covenant
1The Lord said to Moses, “You and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and 70 of the elders of Israel must come to worship the Lord. Do not come close when you worship. 2Only Moses can come close to me. The others must not come near. And the people may not go up with him.”
3Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws. They answered with one voice. They said, “We will do everything the Lord has told us to do.” 4Then Moses wrote down everything the Lord had said.
Moses got up early the next morning. He built an altar at the foot of the mountain. He set up 12 stone pillars. They stood for the 12 tribes of Israel. 5Then he sent young Israelite men to sacrifice burnt offerings. They also sacrificed young bulls as friendship offerings to the Lord. 6Moses put half of the blood in bowls. He splashed the other half against the altar. 7Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They answered, “We will do everything the Lord has told us to do. We will obey him.”
8Then Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people. He said, “This is the blood that puts the covenant into effect. The Lord has made this covenant with you in keeping with all these words.”
9Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the 70 elders of Israel went up. 10They saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a street made out of lapis lazuli. It was as bright blue as the sky itself. 11But God didn’t destroy those Israelite leaders when they saw him. They ate and drank.
12The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain. Stay here. I will give you the stone tablets. They contain the law and commandments I have written to teach the people.”
13Then Moses and Joshua, his helper, started out. Moses went up on the mountain of God. 14He said to the elders, “Wait for us here until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you. Anyone who has a problem can go to them.”
15Moses went up on the mountain. Then the cloud covered it. 16The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. The cloud covered the mountain for six days. On the seventh day the Lord called out to Moses from inside the cloud. 17The people of Israel saw the glory of the Lord. It looked like a fire burning on top of the mountain. 18Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. He stayed on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights.
