约旦河东的支派
1吕便和迦得的子孙有许多牲畜，他们见雅谢和基列适于放牧， 2就来见摩西、以利亚撒祭司和会众的首领，说： 3“亚大录、底本、雅谢、宁拉、希实本、以利亚利、示班、尼波和比稳—— 4这些耶和华为以色列会众攻取的地方适于放牧，而仆人们有许多牲畜。 5如果你们恩待我们，请将这些地方赐给我们作产业，别让我们过约旦河了。”
6摩西对他们说：“难道你们要坐在这里，让其他同胞去打仗吗？ 7你们为何使以色列人军心动摇，不敢进入耶和华所赐之地？ 8从前我在加低斯·巴尼亚派你们的祖先去打探那地方的时候，他们就是这样。 9他们到以实各谷打探那地方，回来后竟动摇军心，使以色列人不敢进入耶和华所赐之地。 10那天耶和华发怒，起誓说， 11‘从埃及出来、二十岁以上的人都看不到我起誓要赐给亚伯拉罕、以撒和雅各的土地，因为他们没有全心全意地跟从我； 12只有基尼洗族耶孚尼的儿子迦勒和嫩的儿子约书亚可以看到，因为他们全心全意地跟从我。’ 13耶和华向以色列人发怒，使他们在旷野漂泊了四十年，直到在耶和华面前作恶的那一代都死了。
14“现在，你们这群罪人的后代竟然重蹈前人的覆辙，加剧耶和华的怒气。 15如果你们离弃祂，祂必再次把以色列人丢弃在旷野，这样你们就毁了整个民族。”
16他们上前对摩西说：“我们要在这里为牲畜建围栏，为家眷筑城邑， 17让他们留在坚固的城内，免受当地居民的威胁。然后我们必拿起兵器率先上阵，直到帮其他以色列同胞夺取他们的土地。 18在其他同胞占领各自的产业之前，我们决不回家。 19但我们不会跟他们在约旦河西岸分土地，我们只想要约旦河东岸之地作产业。” 20摩西说：“如果你们信守承诺，拿起兵器在耶和华面前出战， 21你们全军就要在耶和华面前渡过约旦河，直到祂赶走祂面前的仇敌， 22征服那地方。之后，你们才可以回家，才算在耶和华和以色列人面前尽了自己的责任，这地方就在耶和华面前归给你们作产业。 23但如果你们不守承诺，就是得罪耶和华，必难逃惩罚。 24你们现在去为家人筑城邑，为牛羊建围栏吧，但别忘了信守承诺。” 25迦得和吕便的子孙对摩西说：“仆人们一定遵命而行。 26我们的妻子、孩子、牛羊等牲畜都会留在基列的各城。 27仆人当中所有能上阵打仗的人都会照你的吩咐在耶和华面前过河作战。”
28于是，摩西对以利亚撒祭司、嫩的儿子约书亚和以色列各支派的族长说： 29“如果迦得和吕便子孙中所有能上阵打仗的人，在耶和华面前跟你们一同过河作战，你们征服那片土地以后就要把基列给他们作产业。 30如果他们不带着兵器跟你们一起过河作战，就只能在迦南与你们同分产业。” 31迦得和吕便的子孙再次说：“凡耶和华所吩咐的，仆人们一定照办。 32我们一定带着兵器在耶和华面前过河，前往迦南，但我们要拥有约旦河东之地作产业。”
33摩西就把亚摩利王西宏和巴珊王噩的国土及周围的城邑都给了迦得的子孙、吕便的子孙和约瑟儿子玛拿西的半个支派。 34迦得的子孙重建了底本、亚他录、亚罗珥、 35亚他录·朔反、雅谢、约比哈、 36伯·宁拉和伯·哈兰，使之成为坚固的城池，并建了羊圈。 37吕便的子孙重建了希实本、以利亚利、基列亭、 38尼波、巴力·免和西比玛。他们为重建的城邑起了新名字，如尼波和巴力·免。 39玛拿西之子玛吉的子孙占领了基列，赶走了那里的亚摩利人。 40摩西就把基列赐给玛拿西的儿子玛吉，作他的居所。 41玛拿西的子孙雅珥占领了基列的村庄，将它们改名为哈倭特·雅珥。 42挪巴占领了基纳及其周围的村庄，就按自己的名字称基纳为挪巴。
The Transjordan tribes
1The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock. 2So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said, 3‘Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon – 4the land the Lord subdued before the people of Israel – are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock. 5If we have found favour in your eyes,’ they said, ‘let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.’
6Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, ‘Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here? 7Why do you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land the Lord has given them? 8This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land. 9After they went up to the Valley of Eshkol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the Lord had given them. 10The Lord’s anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath: 11“Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more when they came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob – 12not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.” 13The Lord’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.
14‘And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the Lord even more angry with Israel. 15If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.’
16Then they came up to him and said, ‘We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children. 17But we will arm ourselves for battle32:17 Septuagint; Hebrew will be quick to arm ourselves and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land. 18We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has received their inheritance. 19We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.’
20Then Moses said to them, ‘If you will do this – if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle 21and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven his enemies out before him – 22then when the land is subdued before the Lord, you may return and be free from your obligation to the Lord and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the Lord.
23‘But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out. 24Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised.’
25The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, ‘We your servants will do as our lord commands. 26Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead. 27But your servants, every man who is armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the Lord, just as our lord says.’
28Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes. 29He said to them, ‘If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the Lord, then when the land is subdued before you, you must give them the land of Gilead as their possession. 30But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan.’
31The Gadites and Reubenites answered, ‘Your servants will do what the Lord has said. 32We will cross over before the Lord into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan.’
33Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan – the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.
34The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, 35Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, 36Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks. 37And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim, 38as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.
39The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there. 40So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. 41Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.32:41 Or them the settlements of Jair 42And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself.
