1Как поток воды, сердце царя в руке Вечного:
куда Он захочет, туда его и направит.
2Все пути человека пред глазами его прямы,
но Вечный испытывает сердца.
3Кто поступает праведно и справедливо –
угодней Вечному, чем приносящий жертвы.
4Надменный взгляд и гордое сердце –
как светильник для нечестивого, но это грех.
5Замыслы прилежного принесут изобилие,
а всякий торопливый лишь обнищает.
6Состояние, нажитое лживым языком, –
это исчезающий пар и смертоносная западня21:6 Или: «пар ищущих смерти»..
7Жестокость злодеев их же и погубит,
ведь они отказываются поступать справедливо.
8Путь виновных извилист,
а поступки невинных чисты.
9Лучше жить на углу крыши,
чем в доме со сварливой женой.
10Нечестивый желает зла;
милости ближний у него не найдёт.
11Когда наказан глумливый, простаки становятся мудрее;
когда наставлен мудрец, он обретает больше знаний.
12Дом нечестивца примечает Праведный21:12 Или: «праведник».
и насылает на нечестивца гибель.
13Кто затыкает уши от крика бедных,
тот однажды сам будет кричать, и его не услышат.
14Тайный подарок успокаивает гнев,
и взятка, скрытая под плащом, – лютую ярость.
15Радость праведным, когда вершат правосудие,
но это ужас злодеям.
16Тот, кто сошёл с пути разума,
упокоится среди духов умерших.
17Любящий развлечения обеднеет,
любящий вино и дорогие мази не разбогатеет.
18Не праведный будет наказан, а нечестивый,
не верный – а вероломный.
19Лучше жить в пустыне,
чем со сварливой и злобной женой.
20Дорогое добро и масло остаётся в доме у мудрого,
а глупец его проедает.
21Стремящийся к праведности и любви
найдёт и жизнь, и праведность, и славу.
22Один мудрец может покорить город, полный воинов,
и низвергнуть крепость, на которую они полагались.
23Сторожащий уста свои и язык
хранит себя от беды.
24Гордец надменный, «глумливый» – имя ему;
он действует в чрезмерной гордыне.
25Желания ленивца его умертвят,
так как руки его отказываются трудиться.
26День напролёт он жаждет и желает,
а праведный даёт не жалея.
27Жертва злодеев – мерзость,
а тем более, когда приносится со злым умыслом.
28Лживый свидетель погибнет,
а свидетельство того, кто всё слышал, устоит.
29Нечестивый делает уверенное лицо,
а праведный обдумывает свой путь21:29 Или: «твёрдо идёт по своему пути»..
30Нет ни мудрости, ни разума, ни замысла,
что имели бы успех против Вечного.
31Коня готовят на день сражения,
а победу даёт Вечный.
