Мудрые наставления
1Доброе имя лучше превосходного благовония,
и день смерти лучше дня рождения.
2Лучше ходить в дом плача,
чем ходить в дом пира,
потому что смерть – участь каждого человека,
и кто жив, пусть размышляет об этом.
3Печаль лучше смеха,
потому что печальное лицо полезно сердцу.
4Сердце мудрого в доме плача,
а сердце глупого в доме веселья.
5Лучше внимать обличению мудреца,
чем слушать песню глупцов,
6потому что смех глупцов –
словно треск горящего хвороста под котлом.
И это тоже пустое.
7Притеснение превращает мудрого человека в глупца,
и взятка портит сердце.
8Конец дела лучше его начала,
терпение лучше гордости.
9Не спеши впадать в гнев,
потому что гнев обитает в сердце глупцов.
10Не спрашивай: «Почему прежние дни были лучше сегодняшних?» –
не от мудрости задают такие вопросы.
11Мудрость – хороша, как и наследство,
и приносит пользу тем, кто видит солнце.
12Мудрость защищает так же, как и деньги,
но её превосходство в том,
что она сохраняет жизнь её владельцу.
13Посмотри на дела Всевышнего:
кто может выпрямить то,
что Он сделал кривым?
14В благополучные дни будь счастлив,
а в дни горестные знай:
и то, и другое сотворил Всевышний,
чтобы человек не мог постичь того,
что будет после него.
15В моей пустой жизни я видел всякое:
праведника, гибнущего в своей праведности,
и нечестивого, живущего долго в своём беззаконии.
16Не будь чересчур праведным
и не выставляй себя слишком мудрым.
Зачем тебе губить себя?
17Также не слишком предавайся злу
и не будь глупым.
Зачем тебе умирать раньше времени?
18Хорошо придерживаться первого совета
и не упускать из виду второго –
боящийся Всевышнего избежит всех бед7:18 Или: «следует им обоим»..
19Мудрость делает мудреца сильнее,
чем десять правителей города.
20Нет праведного человека на земле,
который всегда поступал бы правильно
и никогда бы не грешил.
21Не обращай внимания на каждое сказанное слово,
иначе можешь услышать, как раб твой злословит тебя.
22Ты знаешь в сердце своём,
что часто и сам злословил других.
23Всё это испытал я мудростью и сказал:
«Я твёрдо решил стать мудрым»,
но мудрость была так далека от меня!
24Далека она и глубока, глубока –
кто может постичь её?
25И решил я понять, исследовать и изыскать
мудрость и рассуждение
и убедиться, что быть нечестивым – глупо
и быть нерассудительным – безумно.
26И нашёл я, что горше смерти
та женщина, что подобна сети,
чьё сердце – ловушка
и чьи руки – оковы.
Человек, угодный Всевышнему, избежит её,
а грешник будет ею пойман.
27Вот что я нашёл, – сказал Учитель, – слагая одно с другим, чтобы найти разумное объяснение:
28я всё искал, но не находил –
я нашёл лишь одного праведного мужчину среди тысячи,
но ни одной праведной женщины7:28 У Сулеймана было 1 000 жён и наложниц, которые отвернули его сердце от Всевышнего. Этот стих, возможно, указывает на ту печаль, которая появилась из-за этого в его жизни (см. 3 Цар. 11:3)..
29Вот что удалось мне найти:
Всевышний сотворил человека праведным,
а люди пустились во многие помыслы.

7¶ Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart. 8Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. 9Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. 10Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.7.10 wisely: Heb. out of wisdom
11¶ Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.7.11 good…: or, as good as an inheritance, yea, better too 12For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.7.12 defence: Heb. shadow 13Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked? 14In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.7.14 set: Heb. made 15All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness. 16Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?7.16 destroy…: Heb. be desolate? 17Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?7.17 before…: Heb. not in thy time? 18It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all. 19Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city. 20For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not. 21Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:7.21 take…: Heb. give not thine heart 22For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23¶ All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me. 24That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out? 25I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:7.25 I applied…: Heb.
